Convertible v Coupe - which is faster?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've always wondered - when you take the roof off a car, how much slower is it compared to the coupe version of the same car? To find out, we lined up a 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo (992) next to a 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (992) to see exactly what the story is. The end result is me being very, very confused!

    Great video but just so you know, the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle under acceleration and the tendency to ‘squat’ plays a huge role in affecting the grip levels of the car. Putting your ‘ballast’ in the front of the car affects the way the vehicle squats under power - this affect RWD cars more, but still plays a role because the rear tyres are ‘loaded’ more regardless of powertrain format. Obviously there are a million other variables as well so I’m just nitpicking.

    You should dyno each car to take the kW/torque into consideration. I think it's either the cabrio is making a bit more power, or the tarmac at the right lane has more grip.

    Fun test! Regardless of grip or weight ballast the MPH at the end of the 1/4 mile tell the story. That story says either the cab has more HP, or the actual difference in drag is not what is advertised. As mentioned a chassis dyno test would have been enlightening, or you could line the two cars side by side at speed and then put both in neutral and see how they slow. The car with more drag will slow down faster. Another factor could be wheel alignment, perhaps the coupe had more toe in, something caused a lot more tire drag. Most people rarely think about wheel alignment or tire wear, but it can have a huge impact on how the tires drag rolling down the road. Zero toe front and back is ideal for acceleration, but for handling most cars have a fair amount of toe in causing the tires to drag a bit on the pavement. So to do this test and eliminate more variables both cars should be on new same type tires with very similar wheel alignment, chassis dyno test for power variations, and just a basic drag test from say 100 MPH to see if one car has significantly more drag for some reason. Perhaps even a faulty wheel bearing? Or some other mechanical issue? Great effort regardless and what this test shows is that the minor drag and weight differences between a coupe and convertible are negligible compared to many other variables. I have seen several coupe and convertible acceleration tests on high powered cars like these, and they are virtually identical. It is only on low powered cars where the slight differences in weight and drag seem to make a noticeable difference. Perhaps you can try this again sometime with a couple of MX5's with autos.

  • @brainsmatterpodcast
    @brainsmatterpodcast2 жыл бұрын

    Agree with some of the other commenters … the ballast weight distribution makes a difference in grip levels, and it also seems like there may have been a torque curve difference between the two cars too. Just a guess though, bee a while since I’ve done uni physics 🤔

    Would like an explanatory video of the workings of radar cruise control. Got it on my beemer and now the rear brakes are worn apparently with 50k on the clock. Fronts are fine despite doing most of the work. Does radar use rears to adjust speed? Enjoyed the 911 video too!

    No, at this point it's just a screen message with continual warnings that replacement is required. I thought a radar system would reduce power to slow the car, but now I'm not sure. To be honest, I don't have a lot of faith in the dealer or their ability to answer a technical question.

    I have a 997 Cabrio Carrera stick shift. It is very fun in Florida. this is great video I think the convertible is the way to go. Porsche designed the 997 as a Cabrio and added a roof. they did not cut the roof or modify the structure I am sure they are still doing the same. Unlike other cars that do not take the same approach in their convertibles.
