Convert Your Pontoon Into a Fishing Machine

Спорт

The popularity of pontoon boats is growing at a rapid pace thanks to their ability to accommodate several people while servicing casual boaters, water sports enthusiasts and fisherman alike. Wired2Fish's Ryan DeChaine takes us on a tour of his extended family's Lund LX220 Fish and Cruise pontoon, and how he rigged it to enhance the fishing experience. This is relevant rigging content whether you're in the market for a new or used pontoon or already own one.
The featured pontoon has built-in fishing items like tackle and rod storage, rod holders, and livewell and baitwell. Adding a quality fish finder gets you on the fish, while modern boating equipment like trolling motors and shallow water anchors bring convenience, safety, ease of use and precise control to these large boats.
We take a close look at how Ryan rigged the pontoon with a bow mount trolling motor. This rigout required a custom modification to provide trolling motor clearance of the third and centrally located tube while also providing easy install or removal of the trolling motor. Minn Kota’s Ulterra delivers automated stow and deploy coupled with the ability to digitally anchor the pontoon with Spot-Lock - this has proven a huge convenience and boat control plus. Additionally, Ryan discusses the install of dual and diagonally positioned shallow water anchors using Minn Kota Talon Pontoon Edge Mount Kits. The Talons firmly lock the pontoon in place when fishing shallow water, and provide immediate pontoon anchoring when docking, loading and unloading guests, or just playing off the pontoon - all without the need for ropes or anchors.

thanks for not BS'ing us with a bunch of gimmicks and nonsense. Just the stuff that you have needed using your experience. Not click baiting me into watching your video, I really appreciated. I had not thought about the shallow water anchors for a pontoon boat for a safety and conveniences of loading and unloading yet so I think that will be an upgrade that I use for our boat. Thanks for the video!

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens kzread.infoUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

Thanks for the fantastic video, that’s a beautiful set up for family fun and fishing! Best of both worlds! I watched very closely to see how you hooked up the wires to the trolling motor for the I-Pilot Link to the Helix and still be able to remove the motor, I noticed it wasn’t hooked up yet. I’m looking for suggestions for the wires that makes it easy to remove and store without a mess of wires on the deck. Can you offer any suggestions?

Good info. Added a Minn Kota Powerdrive 55 to my 22’ pontoon and it’s amazing how well it works. Especially love the Spot Lock function. Rarely deploy an anchor anymore.

Really nice set up with the talons. We looked at the Lund for a fish toon and we didn’t like the height of the Bimini seemed too tall to be very effective. Otherwise they seemed like a great boat

Thanks for the video using a 'TriToon' lots of video for Pontoon's. What voltage, Shaft length, and thrust of the Ulterra are you using? I am looking at the Ranger 223FC Tritoon which is a 24 footer and 3100 lbs dry so with boat, motor (Mercury 150), fuel, talking about 4,000lbs and still have to add weight of People, trolling batteries depending on 24 or 36 volt, 60lbs/battery for deep cycle from what I am finding. Just wondering if the 24 volt is enough trying to find information. Our first boat for just acquired lake property in Minnesota. But looking for similar set up. except for the Talon anchor. Trying to make well educated decision's with help of others like you. Thanks for Sharing with everyone!

Hi, great information! I just purchased a Minn Kota ulterra. I have actually purchased it before I have purchased a Pontoon boat. My question is, is the 60" the right size for bow mounting on a Pontoon? That is what was recommended. Thanks!

Great video. Anyone ever see or try mounting a trolling motor sideways to stay in front nstead of tipping back into the pontoon?

Not sure on that, but it would require a pretty custom bracket to pull off. The main thing is that you want the trolling motor mounted in the center of the boat so that it keels straight when working forward or Spot-Locked in the wind.

What happens if you dont have the aluminum extension plate for the trolling motor and the middle toon? I'm in a similar situation and my installer said it wasnt necessary. Not sure what to do..

  • @Wired2Fish

Hi PJ Jackson, the aluminum center extension was necessary on this tri-tube pontoon in order for the trolling motor to clear the nose of the tube. We tested this thoroughly in advance. I'd recommend testing with your trolling motor to determine if necessary. Thanks for the question.
