Convert an SVG to a Clean Mesh in Blender
A quick overview of how to convert an SVG into a cleaned up mesh in Blender. (The reason to make it a mesh instead of just extruding the SVG is so you can modify each surface on the mesh)

Quick tip: to speed up cleaning up, don't separate the letters, add a decimate modifier and set it to planar

Yeah, I've found that doing that and setting the angle in the decimate modifier settings to .01° instead of the default 5° cleans up the faces without sacrificing any of the detail.

What do you think of limited dissolve?
Excellent tutorial, quick and straight to the point. I never thought an educational video could be condensed into a youtube short, but you proved that wrong! 💯
Brilliant! The simple and fast solution, thanks for that!
This video and this comment section is pure gold, so many great tips. Thanks everyone and you, creator!
Loved this. It answered the question I had as well as showed some of the ways to "do it right" by reducing the poly count! I'm hoping to use this to get into making motion graphics in blender. Thank you for the video!
It's still ngons so it doesn't work for a number of situations, but if you want this for simple 3D text, you could skip separating them and just select the triangulated geometry and click Mesh>Cleanup>Limited Disolve. It automates this process in the video with 1 click. Or just import as SVG and use extrude under the Curve>Geometry panel in the properties section. It would also give you the 3d Shape without having to convert to a mesh.

Interesting. I'm just getting back into Blender, had this particular issue, this solution worked the best for me - i.e. have some svgs, was importing and converting to mesh and running into all kinds of issues no matter the procedure, whereas leaving it a curve allowed me to bevel the way I wanted no problem.

What's the problem with ngons? I often see this comment about ngons, but never an explanation. Ultimately my goal is to do a wireframe on a 3d logo, is there another way to clean up an imported svg you'd recommend?
Don't know why you don't have more subs tbh that was spot on!

thank you so much for the tutorial. i get everything right, but the part where you dissolve the faces on the b is waaaaaay to fast for me :) i scrubbed through frame by frame but i don't get what you do... and i cant seem to get it right in my blender file. could you please tell me how you dissolved the faces around the holes in the letter b. thanks a lot

Oh yeah those details definitely got lost in editing. Basically what I'm doing is dissolving some faces together (to the left side) so that I have one face that is part of the edge of the holes. Then I select all the faces, deselect that larger one I made, and dissolve all the other faces

Not all heroes wear capes
Why you want to reduce the faces and edges? Yes it looks cleaner. But the verticies count will stay the same. And you create problems with ngons wich might be problematic with shading and smoothing. For extruding you can just select all and hit "E". For what cases is it useful to do that?
muchas gracias
Am I missing something here? Why not load the SVG, go to Data - Shape - Fill mode and set to none? Then convert to mesh, fill and extrude...

Thanks bro. Awesome technique. For those that may not get it so easily, as I struggled a bit, trying to understand what you meant by "Data", after importing, you may want to select everything and scale up, or zoom in or something. This will not show you the data section, as you would have many objects selected. So, after scaling your SVG up, or zooming in, you select one of the objects, and you see the curve options there. This is where you see Fill Mode, and then you set to none. Afterwards, you convert to mesh, as he suggested. It's a really nice approach
this just cuts triangle holes out of my model 😥 i just cant find any videos that can help me
This is fantastic! Thank you so much. A bit fast and small screen for an old guy with bad eyes. But wow! Really hits the nail on the head. One question for the experts: I can't bevel the result. Converted to mesh. Dissolved faces. Extruded. Bevel does nothing (using modifier or other methods). Please help! Thank you :-)
I dont understand what it meant to make the "B" into 2 face that can dissolve, it looks like it has 3 faces
bro selected an E from a B💀

Meanwhile zbrush-- just crease, zremesh(keep creases, freeze borders, same, adapt). Boom, done

If Zbrush would be as accurate in reading .svg as Blender is, You would be more than right. Unfortunately ZB sometimes does close a path or reads curve points wrong. Else, the approach You posted is right, for quickly creating clean geometry out of vector graphics.

Typically in a program meant specifically for dealing with vector images. I recommend Inkscape, because it's excellent and free. If you have Adobe, illustrator is good

When I extrude it, there is unnecessary edges on the side of my svg ):
@MakeArtWithoutTalent

So that would be because you still have too many vertices (points) along the shape. These might be necessary if it's really curvy, but if not just go though and select the three excess points (before extruding) and dissolve them
Dude...... SLOW DOWN !!!! A tutorial is supposed to teach not be an exercise in how fast you can blow through material you intended to explain
why the hell did you go so fast! And those options arent available. Way to present a bad tip!
pleas dont make your tutorial in shorts or public a normal video. Cant jump back or someething :(
you go too fast
Can you explain to me the practical reason why you are unable to make a normal tutorial? For sure there is a tendency on the Internet..."kids making tutorial with the atmosphere of showing their mother how "quickly they can type without looking", my kids did it too when they were ten years old.....kinda kids pride""" (to make people look again, and again a video to gain views ...."because of the speed", is business of trolls. Specially if the tutorial is about pushing the button "X", and disolve faces".....if such a simple move your viewers don´t understand, it is because something is deeply wrong with your tutorial.

I think that this is the coolest tutorial, fast and practical, it even shows you what to do in case you have letters with holes inside, it covered everything you needed as fast as possible. maybe it's made for people that catches the idea easily and don't need a 30min video
