Conversations on Compassion with Byron Katie and Stephen Mitchell

In this dialogue with CCARE’s founder and director, Dr. James Doty, will ask Katie about her life’s amazing work and how compassion has played a role.
Step into an evening of radical self-inquiry with Byron Katie, as she launches her new book, A Mind at Home with Itself. As a surprise, Katie's husband and co-author of the new book, Stephen Mitchell, will help make this evening extra special by joining in on the conversation. The book weaves the brilliant clarity of the Diamond Sutra with the power of The Work, her method of self-inquiry. Katie will engage participants, using The Work, which is so sharp that it can cut through the most obstinate stressful thought and lead you to the freedom that is your birthright.
In 1986, Katie woke up one morning to a state of constant joy that has never left her. In that moment beyond time, she realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts she suffered, but that when she questioned them she didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being.
Katie has been bringing The Work to millions of people for more than 30 years. Her webcasts, weekend workshops, 5-day intensives, 9-day School for The Work, and 28-day residential Turnaround House have brought the beginning of the end of suffering to people all over the world.

I’ve experienced that place she talks about. It’s the “egoless” realm. FEELS like heaven on earth. Unconditional love “the pre conditioned “ original state 🙏💙

I have a vivid memory as a very young child. I saw that learning descriptive words , maybe age 1 or 2 was the invitation to lose myself and I didn't want to learn to talk ... it was so overwhelming and in order to please the world I came into , I fell into that word trance. The closest I can come to it is .. The word Tree. How could something so indescribable be stuffed into a 4 letter word? That's insane.

Byron Katie, I can relate to your experience of suffering. Depression is a prison. Many people do not understand that. Welcome back to freedom.

What a clear and concise exercise. There is no need for victim hood. It's not what happens to us; it's where we GO with our thoughts and hence FEELINGS. That's our power. Our own reaction/response. Thank you for posting this. I was having a standoff with a friend but now I feel clear. Compassion stepped in and I'm free from feeling hurt/victimized.

So often I see amazing spiritual women with husbands who seem like hangers on, without all that much going on. Stephen Mitchell breaks the mold for me on that, and I loved his description and perception of understanding her huge shift and helping us see it.

Thank you Dr Doty, Byron Katie and Stephen Mitchell, I didn't take self inquiry that seriously but Byron Katie really helped make sense of it by making it really applicable. What an epiphany you shared! We often don't questions our thoughts like on auto pilot and this will help millions am sure. #LOVECCARE!

@N TY Heinlein, (sp?) funny i was told that in his late years, when he was asked about his writing, he said that if he could take back any of his books or make changes, Stranger in a Strange Land was the one he regretted writing. i guess he had gotten politcally conservative in his later years & stranger was too liberal? anyways, this was pre internet & a writer friend of mine read an interview of him back in the day. but yeah, i loved still love that book...
