[Controlling/Preventing] Sandburs a.k.a Stickers

Today, I am going to be discussing about how this year was the worst year I've seen for sandburs a.k.a stickers. Then I will tell you about a couple of methods you could use to remove these nasty plants from your pasture, or a few ways to prevent them from even getting there.

The best preventative we’ve found is to pull by hand before heads drop. We throw in the trash. If you already have hardened burrs on the ground drag carpet remnants around by hand or with riding mower, too gather as many seeds as you can and dispose of in the trash. Aside from repeating this method, plant something to choke it out, like rye grass or clover.

Good video, but all you mainly did is say we have sand burs. Anyone that have them know about them. My question is what type of preemergent do I use and when should I use it? I sprayed them with something farmers us and in 4 days they were dead from the roots to the seeds. Then I dragged an old blanket, behind my riding mower. I bought the blanket cheap from a junk store. That got a lot of the seeds but not all. Now I just want to make sure they don't come back again. I have heard using red lime would stop them, But I wouldn't bet on that. I am thinking it would take a ton or more an acre.

Mowing doesn't always help. Sometimes it just helps to spread the sandburs.

I’ve got goats head. Easiest was to torch or burn. Then after seeding the yard thick and wait till spring and pull manually before they get sharp. Must aerate and plug th lawn. Pulling by hand early spring by far got the most. The stickers that are more grass like the super sharp ones you must burn and scalp the earth fiat till and then seed.

My land is only one acre, I have been fighting sandburs for years. The land here in the north of the Argentine pampas is very sandy and poor in nutrients. It is a non-native species here! Can you believe someone brought it? Many people have told me that the best way is to water continuously, raise the seeds and fertilize the soil. greetings!

There can be huge impacts when non indigenous species are introduced. Let me know how the over watering works out.

For years I been, Pulling The sand birds in my yard. And each year I have less of them as long as you don’t mow over them to spread them. But my problem is on the road. They are loaded and the guy plows the road every week and spreads those birds that drop off. Plus my neighbor has them and the wind always blows from the east dinner on the east side of me so I get every fucking weed they got and they have got a whole Field of wheat

They popped up a year ago in my front andback year. we dont even go on the grass anymore but somehow still track them in the house. I 've been using trugreen for a year now with NO results. that's 4 seasons of pre-emergent and post emergent treatments. I think it is a joke to see the trugreen flag in the yard right next to a crop of those painful stickers. I live in a residential area and also have a sprinkler system so I don't think the BURN method is a viable option for me. I was thinking of going in and painstakingly cutting the stalks by hand but haven't figured out how to protect my shoes and clothing.

They are definitely annoying and painful. You may consider using a different pre and post, we've used satellite and MSMA. Make sure your ph is good along with a fertilizer plan that reflects your soil test.

we also used Trugreen with little or no effect on the front yard of our two acre place. I bought a pull behind broadcaster to put down my own preemergent and it seems to have a little effect in our back yard, but since we live in South Texas sand, digging them up by just shoving the shovel directly under the plant is pretty easy. I've gotten most of the plants out of the back yard, but will do preemergent again. Also, over the years, the "wisdom" i've garnered from my father and other old-timers (one of which I am, myself, now), included: 1) mow low and often - don't give them the chance to go to seed, 2) use chemicals as you're able (wasn't practical back when because were working our 40 acres and cousins' 120 acres), and 3) get a good stand of grass going and keep it watered. For the third one, our water bill for irrigation runs from $3-500 per month for just the front yard, so for this year's brutal drought, almost all the grass has simply gone by the wayside. Oh,well, always next year, right?

Always consult a reputable ag chemical suplier and/or your county extension agent. That being said, I would consider MSMA for post-emergence and Satellite for pre-emergence.

@@polkadotfarms how can I find I would chemical True Green is using? apparently whatever they're using is not strong enough. they keep talking about pre-emergent but you're only the second person I've heard talk about post-emergent to attack the weeds while they're still growing and green. because once they're dried up and hard it seems like their needles are even sharper, and they fall apart a lot more easier and disperse more

Best pre emergent is something with Pendimethalin, like Prowl or Pendulum. Best post emergent I’ve found is Pastora.
