Sandbur, also called bur grass, bear grass, or hedgehog grass, is a noxious weed that grows spiny seeds, or burs, that will stick onto clothes, skin, animal fur, or any other surfaces that make contact.
There are many species of sandbur, as they are generally all the plants included the Cenchrus genus. While each species has a unique appearance, we’ll go over general characteristics so you may spot any sandbur more easily.
Sandburs are annual weeds. When young, they look like most other grasses and easily blend into turf. The leaf blades are thin, flat, and usually lack hairs. The tips are sharply pointed. The grass blades can grow to varying lengths depending on the species, but the widths are usually no more than ¼ of an inch.
When sandburs bloom, their inflorescences, or flowering structures, grow in spike formations, and can then be easily spotted on most properties. The seeds they produce are covered in needle-like barbs that will cling to clothing, skin, or fur.
Sandburs are summer annual weeds or perennials, depending on the species. They can be found throughout the United States in many soil types, but they thrive in dry, sandy soils.
Sandburs germinate from seed when soil temperatures warm to 52 degrees Fahrenheit, and they flower from June to November. Different species will grow vertically above the ground or form dense mats that creep lower along the ground. If it’s late in the season, look out for their inflorescences and seeds.
If you’re situated in the southern United States with warm-season grasses, we recommend Celsius WG Herbicide. This herbicide offers the selective control of weeds in warm-season turf. For spot applications, mix 0.085 ounces, or 2.4 grams, of the product into 1 gallon of water to apply over 1,000 square feet. To enhance this product’s efficacy, mix in a surfactant like Nanotek. Nanotek is a non-herbicide product designed to improve the adhesion and penetration of pesticides onto treated surfaces. Add 1 fluid ounce of Nanotek per 1 gallon of solution you’ve made.
If sandbur is growing in cool-season turf or where plants shouldn't be, like on sidewalks or other paved areas, then consider a non-selective herbicide like Eraser 41% Glyphosate. This non-selective herbicide will kill any plant it is applied to. Just mix 2.5 fluid ounces of Eraser into 1 gallon of water to treat up to 300 square feet.
To treat sandbur in professional non-residential areas like sod farms or golf courses, check out MSMA Target 6 Plus Herbicide. You’ll mix 1 fluid ounce of this product into 1 to 2.5 gallons of water per 1,000 square feet.
For either of these products, we recommend you mix and apply your herbicide with a handheld sprayer or a backpack sprayer. If using Eraser, be sure to label your sprayer explicitly for non-selective herbicides to prevent cross-contamination in the future.
Spot-treat any weed you’ve found during your inspection. Use a fan or cone spray pattern to ensure the leaves are fully coated, and spray the weed to the point of wet but not runoff. Be sure to spray on calm days when temperatures are not too hot and when wind speeds are low to minimize drift.
When applied properly, affected weeds will yellow and begin to die. Conduct follow-up applications as necessary. A reapplication with Celsius WG may be made after 2 to 4 weeks. After applying Eraser, you should see results within 2 to 4 days, but a second application may be made after 4 weeks. Reapplications with MSMA Target 6 Plus Herbicide can range from 1 to 3 weeks, however, these applications are more restricted, so please read the product’s label thoroughly before use.
To prevent new sandbur from growing from seed, mix 0.73 fluid ounces of the product into 1 gallon of water to apply over 1,000 square feet. Broadcast the product over your treatment area, then after 6 hours, water the area with about half an inch of irrigation.
