Contraception and lower birth rates are problems, but there is hope: children

Ойын-сауық

Pope Francis expressed his concern about declining fertility rates at an annual conference in May 2023, in which he connected low rates with lack of hope. The Holy Father said, “The birth of children, in fact, is the main indicator for measuring the hope of a people. If few are born it means there is little hope. And this not only has repercussions from an economic and social point of view but also undermines confidence in the future.” The Pope concluded, “A change in mentality is needed; the family is not part of the problem, but part of its solution.”

Thank you for the video Bishop! I pray God continues to bless you. This video appeared on my feed as soon as I started to read my copy of “Humanae Vitae”. I’m a new convert coming in from a Protestant, independent Baptist, background. I start RCIA in September and I’ve dove head first into researching and studying the faith in preparation. I’m frankly struggling with the Church’s teaching on contraceptives. I’m open to learn and understand which is why I bought a copy of the literature. My journey toward Catholicism has been message after message delivered by the Holy Ghost. It sounds like God has another message for me, and I need to listen. Y’all pray for me. 🙏🏾 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen!

I know my nieces and nephews all use artificial contraception. Their reasoning is that they can't afford more than 2 kids. However, I think it has to do with how they choose to spend their money. Two cars ( we got by with one) Each child has to have their own bedroom ( my sisters and brothers shared rooms.) They don't wear second-hand clothes, they have to have new ones. When we went to see Santa, we would ask for whatever toy was popular at the time, but we got what our parents could afford. We were always happy with what we got. Now, kids have to have exactly what they asked for. Parents aren't setting an example anymore. We give kids whatever they want want whenever they want it and then wonder why they grow up the way they do. They'll always be in debt because they have to have it now. Oh, they go to church but no longer see sacrifice and patience. They donate less to the church to have more for themselves. This will not get better until God is placed at the head of the family. Sorry for the rant. I just see too many of my family going down the wrong road. Love and prayers 🙏 Jan

You got by with one car because you neither worked nor did you have to drive your kids to school. We walked to school. My kids attended a Catholic school 10 miles away.walking was not possible.

@nbenefiel We also went to a Catholic school, and it was one mile. We walked unless it was below 10 degrees. Then mom took us to school and dad to work. Mom worked at night, so we always had one parent at home. Thanks for your reply. Jan

The Church has a net worth of trillions of dollars. If you want people to have more kids then they need to be supported financially. Would the Church do it? I came from a lower-middle class family, and until now we still struggle financially. I only graduated high school for a few months and now my parents have to work harder just to support my college and that includes tuition fee. And my parents only had two kids, and me being eldest, I was given lots of responsibilities and that includes taking care of my rascal of a brother. It was tiring I even went to the most poorest places in my country as part of my school's medical mission and look what I found. Women with more than four kids and starving. The worst part was, a lot of those women with families are younger than me. Is that the kind of life I want for my kids? Hell no! My father also grew up poor and he had five siblings. I remember him telling me that his parents would only cook 3 eggs and share it with the rest of the family. My father had two siblings who had lots of children despite being college dropouts and struggling for work, thankfully their children are now grown, have stable jobs, and have had families of their own. And I might and could be the first person on my family to break the cycle. Once Im financially stable, I would plan what my life would be at retirement and I would never give the church not even a penny on tithes. Even on my last breath, having kids are the least of my concerns. I will forever be and remain childfree for the rest of my life

A few observations: 1. The Catholic Church is going to preach about sinfulness and children in the same sentence? Isn't that still a little too soon? 2. Pope Francis is correct about procreation reflecting a certain amount of hope for the future. Exactly where does one look for NON-ecclesiastical hope in the way the world is heading? 3. Turning in the opposite direction, isn't Jesus, the Rapture, etc. supposed to be happening like any day now? When He establishes His kingdom of glory on earth (or whatever - please forgive me for being a little fuzzy on the details) then won't this all get sorted by The Lord Himself?

Birth rates are lower because it takes two incomes to support a family and very few women want 10 or 12 kids anymore. My two sisters in law had 10 and 12 kids. None went to college, several dropped out of HS to get jobs. Contraception has been part of women’s lives for millennia. No wonder people are leaving the church in droves.

@@nbenefiel I don't have kids and I never will, but I think we should focus on making the world a safe place for the new generation; such as school funding, medical support, making sure they're never hungry or homeless, etc. Also, women aren't wanting to have kids if they don't feel they can get help safely if something goes wrong. There's thousands of children in the foster system, why focus on bringing in new ones? A system that relies on constant growth no matter what the population and world is going through is doomed to fail.

@@Anuyushi I agree. The planet is full to bursting. Climate change is limiting the ability to grow food and we are losing livable land. The idea of going back to families of 10 or 12 kids is ridiculous.

@@nbenefiel Absolutely! I'm not against families with large kids at all, but the world at the moment just can't sustain it. I live in a very rustic quiet town and I still couldn't move out at 18. I was able to move out of my parent's home when I was 23, moving to a shoddy apartment with a roommate because even an apartment costs more than what minimum wage gives in a month. It's not fair for new generations to wonder where their food is coming from or if they can start their own families or build a home, but it's where are right now.
