ALSO! I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but the “ensemble” are actually Odysseus’ men whenever he sings. When a mortal is singing the voices MUST exist in-universe. But gods can create their own background vocals.
@nutelasaur9453

I think technically, for this song, it's Zeus's godly ensemble since Zeus is still spurring Odysseus to handle the infant. The way Gigi animated it is that Odysseus is alone until he goes outside to drop the infant, so how would his soldiers be accompanying him before then? It's definitely unclear based on my current knowledge but still fun to think about lol

@@nutelasaur9453 Remember the animatics aren't canon. You can only fully analyze based on the songs themselves and what Jorge has said. To explain the vocals kicking it, it shows Odysseus walking outside. When he was inside he was alone, so no backing. When he walked outside and approached the area where his men were the backing kicked in. Zeus isn't musically in this song, and the backing vocals are consistent with it being Odysseus' men rather than the chorus Zeus was summoning in the previous song.

@@JenniferGlatzhoferwhat happened was he dropped the baby from the wall and it die. It was an action that would haunt him for the rest of his life.
You: Infanticide? *I sleep* 😌 Ensemble? *REAL SHIT!* 🤩
Fun fact: If you hear background vocals without a god present, they have to come from somewhere. If there is a god present they can break the rules of diagetic music and create their own background vocals. In this song Odysseus was all alone during that singing but as he walked the infant towards the outside closer to his men down below the background vocals kicked in
I LOVE how the play leaves it ambiguous if he threw the Infant or not... It's great, and it makes the end of Act 1 SO MUCH BETTER!

@@JenniferGlatzhofer I hate to say this, that only applies to the original Odyssey. The creator of Epic has confirmed that Odysseus dropped the baby. Especially since it's a present worry/problem Odysseus has

@@bradleybarnett1469yeah, but it’s ambiguous in the musical tracks, and not confirmed one way or another in the lyrics until much later-casual listeners or first time viewers don’t have the advantage of author’s notes! Staging will make a huge difference and that’ll be an interpretation choice by directors if/when it makes it to stage- and I keep going back and forth as to whether I prefer it ambiguous until you-know-when, or whether I like it better being confirmed at this point in the story. It’s a really fascinating artistic/storytelling question!

Unless you know about the Trojan war already. I knew from the first listen that Astyanax was destined to die. The baby dies in every telling of the Trojan war.

@@liminalpsych I'd prefer it to be staged as ambiguous, it adds a dynamic layer to the songs he signs where character's try and influence his thoughts (Arms Wide Open/Goodbye/Ruthlessness etc) since you don't know where he actually falls at his core. And the byline of the musical "when does a man become a monster?" holds more 'oomph' if you spend the first half of the musical arguing with yourself that, "no way he killed that kid. Our Captain wouldn't!"
In case you're confused, because the next songs don't say it directly, Odysseus does kill the baby

MOOOORE! More epic reactors rise up! If i may suggest another musical, it would be great to see analysis of songs from Hadestown. Some amazing harmonies and voices in that one
There is a bit of a jump in the next song. But yeah... it's implied he threw the baby off the wall.

No, it’s confirmed. In… another song… SPOILERS In monster, he says “if I have to drop ANOTHER infant from a wall so we all don’t die”. ‘Another’ means he did it.

Not necessarily implied (Jorge Rivera himself, in the recap before the Underworld Saga came out, said it was ambiguous and not clear). As the comment before mine said, it has been confirmed by the end of Act 1.

fun fact. That babys name is Astyanax. In the Illiad, some other dude tosses the baby and in the Iliupersis, Odysseus kills it. Both epics come from the same time so both are valid ideas

I can't remember whose does - but there is an animatic where you can see Helen jerk in a soldier's arm trying to rush to the wall as she sees him approaching it with her baby. Edit: it's WolfytheWitch's animatic. And mircsy actually shows the baby being let go of.

Jennifer! Epic continues and another cliff hanger! Oh boy ... does he go through with it? Let's ask Sarah. 😁 Or watch your next video. One good thing about getting behind with this one is I can watch one chapter after the next ... I don't have to wait to see! Great story telling in this one and the diction is on point isn't it! Awesome reaction and analysis as always Jen.
Something great in Epic is that the ensemble is diegetic. When a "mortal" sings, any other voices that join them are actually present - like the chorus behind Odysseus being his soldiers. Meanwhile, when a _god_ sings, they use their divine power to give themselves vocal backing.
Jorge is the man who write EPIC and the voice of Odysseus he’s incredible❤️

AND the fandom has agreed he is the Apollo incarnate
So, quick facts- First, all Mortal characters have to have their choruses exist diagetically. Gods can summon their own choruses. Even monsters can't do that, far as I know. In this song, the Greek army is singing the chorus. And they're singing it because they just lied, tricked their way into Troy, and murdered the city under the cover of night. Most of the soldiers likely died in bed, or scrambling to get shields and spears. And now they're burning the city, while many won't even understand what is happening. THEY want to know when THEY become monsters, too.
Every single time I hear this song, without fail, I tear up.
Yes thats Jorgey borgey. Hes awesome!
The baby didnt die after falling. So he went down, grabbed the baby, climbed back up, then dropped it again.
my greek teacher when telling us about the trojan war: also, they threw the baby of hector from the city wall, anyways.
*dances* And down will come baby, cradle and all!

@JenniferGlatzhofer Hi Jen I don't know if you noticed but Nightwish dropped new music just three days ago It is a song called "Perfume Of The Timless" and is a great music video I think that you will love it 😉
MOREEEEEEEE
Just saying. Imagine this without the animatics. When it came out (all those years ago... I cant belive its already been multiple years (I was there from the beginning) Damn...) I was listening without any knowledge beside the lyrics, i was listening to it for half a year, wondering whether or not he killed the baby. Drew my own animatic, (on paper) but couldt finish it, because I didnt know whether or not he killed him... It was very frustrating! Cause it could go both ways. "Forgive me" could be to Zeus cause he cant do it. Or it could be because he did it... Well now we know...
