    The Kryptotal Rear looks almost exactly like a Specialized Butcher, which for me was a great front tire. The rear definitely has a little more channel width than the front, so I think it would carve a little better when leaning the bike over in turns. Continentals naming convention is a little unusual I think. They took the tire which they rated as better for loose conditions and has more channel width and open knob spacing, and named it the rear,. While the tire which has closer knob spacing and less channel width, and they identify as better for mixed conditions, is named as the front. This is the opposite of every other tire combo I've seen to date. I have not yet run my Kryptotal Rear on the front. Also I'm ordering an Argotal enduro soft so I can run Kryptotal Front on rear with Argotal on front. To me that seems like it will be a decent combo as well for mixed hardpack with roots and rocks covered with lots of leaves and wet that we get here in southeast USA in winter. I've been running the DH casings since April now and the enduro casings since July, I need to just finish some videos even if they are not perfect. Thanks!

Kenda tyres are the best bang for the buck and they are though for their weight. Atc casing is awesome for all around trailriding but for dh/park a bit too thin. New schwalbe is also awesome. @Gabriel Marias Sorry I didn't reply sooner, have been busy mostly with work and family stuff and also just slacking in my spare time. Kryptotal Front enduro soft 29x2.4 was 1213 grams when I weighed it. Xynotal enduro soft 29x2.4 was 1165 grms when I weighed it. I don't have a Kryptotal Rear in enduro soft, my Kryptotal Rear is a 27.5x2.4 DH soft, but it was 1199 grams when I weighed it. I think the soft compound has both more grip and better wear than Maxx Terra. The enduro casing is very similar to the Double Down casing but the enduro casing has a tougher apex insert in the bead area, in my opinion. I can ride Kr Front and Kr Rear year round where I am, and Xynotal in rear year round would work if there is no mud. If you have a lot of mud then Argotal front would be better I think.

I don't know if Continental has plans to make these casing / compound options. That being said, I have a Kryptotal Front and Xynotal both in enduro soft on my trail bike, and soft compound has pretty good traction. Soft is not as sticky as super soft but soft feels somewhere between Maxx Terra and Maxx Grip.

Gravel bike tires would work fine if you are really only riding on cement and only occasionally getting on dirt. Unless you are doing some kind of urban freeride. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, have been busy mostly with work and family stuff and also just slacking in my spare time. The enduro casing Continentals have been very good for me so far. I have no sidewall slashes and the enduro sidewalls have been very durable. I find down around 19 psi in the rear on the enduro casing I can roll the tires on the rims in the very fast berms but I have not had a bead come off the rim, I only feel the tire roll. The DH casing sidewalls are much thicker and stiffer than the enduro casings, but they are on my park bike Commencal Meta so I usually run the DH casings much higher pressure (22-24 psi) just for that reason alone. I don't run inserts on any of our tires.

    Sorry I didn't reply sooner, have been busy mostly with work and family stuff and also just slacking in my spare time. The Kryptotal Front performs about the same as the Assegai but it does roll faster. Assegai is better in loam and mud, Kryptotal Front is better in hardpack and dust, but both tires perform adequately in the areas they are not "better". Compared to a DHR2, the Kryptotal Rear is a better comparison. Kryptotal Rear has a wider channel than the Kryptotal Front, and Rear probably brakes better than Front, but its hard to tell honestly. Front is better on hardpack and dust and Rear is better on loam and mud. I'm running Xynotal on the rear and it is better than Dissector in every aspect as a rear tire. Maybe Dissector rolls faster, but I'd wear out 3 Dissectors (tearing knobs) in the lifespan of 1 Xynotal. I don't get stuff for free, I'd rather save money and give up some rolling speed. 😄 If I buy another set of Contis when these are done I'll probably do Argotal on the front and Kryptotal Front on the rear.

    Sorry I didn't reply sooner, have been busy mostly with work and family stuff and also just slacking in my spare time. The tires are pretty close in sizes you were asking for. I measured as following with a set of calipers: - Kryptotal Front 2.4 on 30.5mm wide rim: knob width 2.48" casing width 2.40" - Assegai 2.5WT on a 27mm wide rim: wide knob pattern width 2.50" narrow knob pattern width 2.40" casing width 2.37" Assegai has two different sets of side knobs and those sets are different widths - All measurements were done on both tires at 21 psi. So the wider knobs on Assegai 2.5WT are wider than Kryptotal Front 2.4 but the narrower Assegai knobs are less wide than Kryptotal Front. Overall the two around about the same in my opinion. I have the Assegai WT tire mounted on a 27mm rim, so on a 30 mm or 35 mm rim as recommended by Maxxis, likely it will be a little wider than I measured but likely not much larger than it is now. We run the WT tire on the narrow rim on front because it is on my sons bike and the rounder profile makes the tire roll faster in the corners so he loses less speed when leaning the bike (in theory). He is only 12, he doesn't have the leg power of an adult.

    @@lakaldrak My experience is Maxxis tires always measure undersize on both the knobs and the casing width when compared to the ETRTO metric sizing and also the marketing size of tire width in inches. I was surprised when this Assegai was 2.5" wide on the wider knobs even on the i27 rim. The ETRTO size is what the MFGs have to match for the casing width, and the marketing based inch width they publish is normally overstated for marketing (this is my experience). - For example the Kryptotal Front (27.5x2.4) at 60-584 is a 60mm casing and a 584 mm bead seat, and I measured the casing at 2.40", but the 60 mm ETRTO is only 2.36", so the KrF casing is oversized, which is what people normally want. The knob width at 2.48" is also oversized compared to their advertised 2.40" marketing specification, which is again, what people actually usually want (wider than advertised). - Comparatively the Assegai (27.5x2.5WT) is a 63-584, so the ETRTO 63 mm casing should be 2.48" wide, but actually it only measured 2.37" wide, so the Assegai casing is undersized. Also, at a marketing spec of 2.5 wide" the Assegai matches on one set of knobs since the widest knobs are 2.50", but not all the other knobs, which measured only 2.40". - This at least how I understand the specifications. ETRTO width is supposed to be casing width, marketing width in inches is supposed to be the tread width (at least for MTB). The casing width is more important to the manufacturers (and this is why ISO specifies casing rather than tread) because the casing has to interface to the rim in a standardized method. For example a 622 road bike tire has the same bead seat diameter as a 622 MTB tire, but a 28-622 road tire is not likely to fit well on a 30-622 MTB rim, and a 63-622 MTB tire is not going to work well on a 19-622 road rim. - Anyway this got really long, sorry. I suspect we are both saying the same thing, but many people don't understand the difference between the ETRTO and advertised dimensions in inches.

    I ran Kryptotal Front and Xynotal in rear both enduro casing soft compound on my Stumpjumper Evo. Lots of roots, hardpack, loose over hard, sand, I was pretty happy with them. Also ran them in the bike parks and never pinch flatted so they worked out pretty well. On an ebike depending how fast you go I might even run a DH casing soft tire in the rear, but really, the enduro casings lived through rock gardens at Snowshoe at 20+ mph.

    How do the new Continentals compare to the Baron in dry/dusty/loose terrain?

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry I didn't reply sooner, have been busy mostly with work and family stuff and also just slacking in my spare time. This question has a lot of answers. 🙂 I found Der Baron in thick dust worked very well, but Der Baron on a thin layer of dust over hardpack slid around quite a bit. Der Baron in loam and loose dirt worked very well. On thin dust over hardpack both Kryptotals work well but Kryptotal Front seems better than Rear on thin dust over hardpack, I guess because Front has more knobs than rear (?). In thick dust Kryptotal Front works OK, but I'm going to guess that Argotal will be better (I couldn't find any Argotal enduro casings in 29x2.4 so I never bought one). Argotal looks a lot like a Der Baron though, or a Magic Mary or a Shorty or a Hillbilly, so I suspect its going to work about the same. Xynotal on rear is adequate in thick dust and loose, but I personally would not run Xynotal on front in those conditions. In thick dust on rear I can feel Xynotal slide quite a bit.

    @Javier Perez I was looking at Maxxis website and they have a DHF in 26x2.5 in wire bead DH casing. Also do not worry too much about 2.4 vs 2.5, there will not be a huge difference in traction if you have a good compound and tread pattern. Honestly I can't imagine a scenario where we ride bikes and we need Wetscream or other mud spike style of tire. If you ride lift access downhill parks in deep mud then it probably works great. For us, we have ridden in muddy conditions on tires like Der Baron (or Argotal) and Shorty and Assegai and Butcher, and they were all fine in a thin layer of mud, maybe half inch deep or so. If its a couple inches of mud we probably aren't going to ride bikes. 😄 The mud spike tires will be terrible on hard pack because he knobs are so tall and flexible. The Shorty is the same pattern as a Wetscream just with knobs cut down shorter, and Shorty works pretty well on loose over hard and loam and mud but it slides a bunch on smooth hardpack.

    Assegai is a 2.5WT MaxxTerra compound. MaxxTerra works fine on front for my son since he is only about 100 lbs. The Kryptotal Front I have both an Enduro Soft and a DH SuperSoft. SuperSoft feels stickier than MaxxGrip but Soft feels in the middle of MaxxTerra and MaxxGrip. For me though, having had both, I think I could ride the Soft compound anywhere. When we went to Snowshoe it poured rain one day and both Kryptotal Front in SuperSoft and Kryptotal Rear in Soft stuck to everything no problems. Even that being said on my 170/160 enduro bike with DH casing tires both Contis roll fast enough that I do not really notice them when I ride it locally on flat-ish XC trails. I have the Enduro Soft casings on my trail bike I ride most of the time.

    What’s your recommended all year round enduro combo?

  • @jaredrude431

    @jaredrude431

    Жыл бұрын

    There are so many good combos. It would be hard for many people to not choose Assegai/DHR2 or Magic Mary/Magic Mary given their past results. For me and how I like to ride, one set of tires used mostly dry, not much mud, year round, loose, hard pack and loose over hard, I honestly would probably use a WTB Vigilante 2.5 tough/high grip front and WTB Trail Boss 2.4 tough/fast rolling rear. Vigilante is kind of square edged and slow if I get off line but it is very forgiving when I screw up (which is often) and I can track back on line relatively easily. Trail Boss rolls fast and is predictable. If the conditions were more wet I'd probably run Magic Mary/Magic Mary for an enduro, but if Nobby Nic were available in Super Gravity I would use that on the rear instead because of the faster rolling. I have never had a Big Betty but it looks like a DHR2 so probably it works fine. The new Continentals are good as well, Kryptotal Front and Xynotal rear enduro soft front and DH soft rear for traction/fast rolling, but Xynotal is terrible in mud, while Trail Boss is just OK in mud. These are for a high pedal effort descent where I would want to roll fast and not lose too much speed and trying to stay off the brakes.
