The most amazing thing to me in this video is how nice your roads are there. Here, in Los Angeles, I could only dream of driving on smooth roads like that.

Clearly it's time for a professional sound lunatic (me) to do a proper test of these kinds of tires. Readings with a dB meter aren't instructive, they only give you an average overall loudness. What matters more is *where* that loudness is concentrated, meaning what frequency range is it primarily resonating in. If you're averaging 70dB but most of the energy is around 400Hz, it will sound way louder and interfere with conversation much more than if you're averaging 70dB and it's concentrated an octave lower at 200Hz. Sound dampening (as opposed to sound reduction) is all about lowering the frequency of resonances. In my example, getting 400Hz down to 200Hz will mean less 'hollow roar' and more 'mellow rumble'. Mellow rumble is what makes luxury cars sound like luxury cars. 🕺🏻

I did a follow up on this where I explain why the dB meter is not accurate, as the foam dampens only certain frequencies. So, it sounds quieter while it really isn’t from total loudness perspective, as you explained above

Cheers for staying curious but a decibel reading app on an iPhone isn't really gonna give you much information, for obvious reasons. Even if the mic in the phone (and the app) was somehow adequate to accurately measure decibel levels, you'd still not be getting the correct information. Not all frequencies sound the same and you're not really gonna capture that on a decibel meter. For example, I've had a lot of different machines for polishing cars (and still do) and there's one machine that's TECHNICALLY the quietest in terms of decibels but because the frequency at which it produces sound is so fatiguing/annoying to the ears, it actually sounds a lot louder in practice. Meanwhile, the machine I currently use 99% of the time might be louder on the decibel scale but the sound it makes is a much lower pitch and therefore in practice it sounds much quieter and on top of that, the sound is MUCH less fatiguing over long periods of time and it's not annoying at all. I see you put a new video in the caption but I just can't be bothered right now and I already typed out my thoughts so it's too late haha. Peace.

Tbh, this is just simple factor of comparing good tires to good tires, Michelins and Continentals at 21 inch size are both premium, quality tires.

To me, both almost have the same average dB but the MICHELIN tires absorb road shocks 7 dB better by looking at the max recordings between the two, 86 vs 93.

I believe that rough road surfaces seems to make the biggest difference to loudness inside the cabin

In Australia we have very rough road surfaces in many places. Known as 'course chip bitumin'. It's REALLY loud

True. That goes for any car though. It is exactly that which the tire manufacturers are trying to combat with these foam inserts. I revisited this test several months later and found that even though the actual sound levels are not that different, the frequencies that humans are fine tuned for are being muffled by the foam insert, so that it seems there is less sound.

@@MrCJHamill there is a tyre called Michelin Primacy ST designed especially for this. Made a real difference for me. Perform well all round too. I believe they were developed in Australia too.

Thank you for the time you spent for this interesting test. I was hoping for more of a difference between the noise level of the two tyres, yet if I remember a mere three decibel difference amounts to doubling the noise level. I have an X P90D and the noise level on the striated concrete roads in Belgium can be disrupting, hope improvements continue.

Road surface does a lot, indeed. 130kph on smooth surface can be pretty quiet. You do get the wind noise of course. And tire noises are not that much different. You can hear it all the way up to 250kph in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZH6Xj7Bpj6zdlZc.html

People need to know that doubling in noise amounts to about 3 decibels .

Great video I think the very short sidewalls don't take advantage of the ContiSilent technology, as you are basically riding on the rims with 21" Also using 2 different rims changed a variable, as some transmit noise more than others I would like to see a tall sidewall test, like the 215/55r17 I have on my Lexus ES 350 I traded a younger guy who has the base ES 350, my ultra luxury 19* wheels, as I want the ride and comfort of taller sidewalls, he wants the look and the handling On a Lexus there is no difference in handing lol, they are not built for that, I would have bought a BMW if that's what I was looking for Going from 235/40r19" to 215/55r17" the ride is night a day difference even with the adaptive suspension and noise and Vibration went from small to non existent I used the same tires, as I my favorite are Continental Pure contact LS, and put new ones on the 17" rims when we did the switch

The car should have better soundproofing...especially for that price..A Mercedes S Class is way quietter despite running on fuel...

You should have used a real calibrated decibel meter instead. Then you could have had a decimal too and maybe more accurate result. Also the traffic should be the same so maybe the test should be made at night.

1 decibel is not aubible for most people. About 3dB is what most people can differentiate. So the decimals don't really matter here. I agree on the traffic part, but can say that I've tried to measure at the points where there was the same amount of traffic, or better said: lack of traffic. But I like the suggestion of doing it at night. (have to find someone who can swapt eh tires at night too though ;-) ) It's not a perfect test, but the results are consistent and in line with what the numbers say from the tire shop. The new Michelin tires I got with the arachnid wheels are the same brand and size than the ones I have on them now. Perhaps I need to redo the test with the same brand of tires and see if that makes more difference.

It was the same device and for an avarage value that included traffic and no traffic its not really a problem but that 1 dBA difference ist not worth mentioning. Sadly continental did not provide us a substantial more silent tire.

I was surprised by the results too, but the numbers don't lie. The feeling was it does make a difference, but the only real difference I found was in the frequency. Maybe that is where the difference lies and it is more perception because of the frequency being less tuned to our ears...

The sound going through Phone MIC is usually heavily processed using filters. They are looking for the human speaking frequencies.

I believe those numbers are the noise they produce on the outside. The foam supposedly helps for sound dampening inside of the cabin.

Steven Peeters That's not how it works if it's louder on the outside it will be louder in the inside (it's the same sound sound that echos to the insides of the tire), the only reason it's not as loud in the inside is because of the various suspension damping components and the car's insulation.

Of course, you are right, if you want exact values. The test here is about the relative difference. Good enough for the purpose...

The speeds you're going at measuring is kind of useless to be honest because its usually at 90-120km/h where it is important to have a silent coupé not the five minute 30-40km/h rides. Ive read many Decibel measuring reviews from good sites and the goodones like mercedes, bmw etc.. german cars usually get it down to a 71-72dB level on the highway. and thats at its BEST.
