Contemporary Trestle Table Part 3: The Solid Cherry Table Top
In this video I construct the solid Cherry table top for a Contemporary Style Trestle Table. I choose the lumber, rough cut the boards, mill the boards, glue up the panels, machine an edge profile, and sand the top.
While I’m really happy with the final shape and structure of the table, I’m not terribly fond of the layout of the panels. I put an emphasis on grain structure and put less emphasis on grain matching the panels. I could have alleviated this problem by milling up more boards to choose from, or sequentially stacking boards to dry as they come off of the mill. The later wasn’t possible since I bought the Cherry lumber as rough sawn boards, that were randomly stacked by the sawyer before I stickered them at home. The table top may look completely different once I apply finish.

Your thorough explanations help a lot. I'm new to woodworking and this is very helpful.Thank you!
Is there a reason you didn't use biscuits when gluing your pieces?
Hello Huy, I too am in the process of learning wood working. I've gotten decent at cabinetry. Guy has really inspired me to learn the furniture craft. Thank you for pointing me to another great artisan, Philip Morley.
Excellent channel! I've been thinking about a similar project with Cherry as well. Do you use a local supplier like Hobby Hardwood?
Thanks for the lead. Anyone's name in the same breath as Guy's most definitely is worth a watch. Great video, table is built for the ages!
Really liking your channel! Like your style too. Can you do a quick video of your video production equipment you are using right now? Even software if you are using any. I would like to emulate your setup so I can broadcast my projects. Your video quality is about what I would like to produce. Thanks in advance.
Really liking this series so far. Only suggestion would be to work on your font color for on screen graphics, as they can be tough to read. Thanks.
I really enjoy how you speak through you're thought process for each detail! The table is looking great too!
Great videos! I really enjoy your explanations and reasoning, I do alternate grain patterns but I also use biscuits for alignment.
The table is looking good Huy. Steve
Very nicely done.
yet another great video. Keep up the great work!
Looking good, man. Having fun watch the table come along.
Great video!! What are the rollers you use on your table saw fence? Thank you
Thank you so much for the shoutout! We are shooting more videos this weekend and will be starting some great projects soon.
I think the top looks great Huy! And thanks so much for the shout out!
I think the table top looks awesome. I go bye face grain and matching my tops with what looks best but with that said I use the domino for the glue up and a way to combat any cupping I have not had any problems. Now maybe I was just lucky with wood movement but just my two cents. Love your work keep up the great work
always leaving me wanting more... great job
