Constant Head Permeability Test | Procedure and Data Analysis

This video explains the procedure of constant head test to determine the soil permeability. This test is performed on coarse-grained soil with a high coefficient of permeability. The soil sample is first saturated over several days to establish a constant water flow through the soil. The test takes a few minutes, during this test, the amount of water (water volume) is measured over time, and the water heads on the standpipes are measured as well. Darcy's law is used to calculate the coefficient of permeability. The fundamentals of water flow in soil mass, including liquefaction and quick conditions are described in this video • Explanation of Water F... while the principles of vertical water flow in soil are explained using a practical example in this video • Vertical Water Flow in... . hello! i would like to find out the water level if a standpipe is inserted such that the intake point is 50 mm above the bottom of the sample. what does it mean?

That's a long (time-consuming) process to prepare the specimen, and it actually takes much longer than the test itself. We follow the standard procedure that describes how it should be done. Here are the references: Australian Standard AS 1289 6.7.1-2001. Method of testing soils for engineering purposes: Method 6.7.1 Soil strength and consolidation tests - Determination of permeability of a soil - Constant head method for remoulded specimen. Method of testing soils for engineering purposes: Method 6.7.2 Soil strength and consolidation tests - Determination of permeability of a soil - Falling head method for remoulded specimen.
