I was able to try the 54 during a Mizuno fitting day last month. It does look odd, but most of what I do with high loft wedges can be called odd (or possibly troubling). I was really impressed with it, felt good, worked well whether it was a full swing or a half swing. 54 & 58 now on my Christmas List.

I think hitting on a mat leaves one of the benefit of this club off the table; fluffy rough with the ball sitting up, where the amateur hits the ball towards the top part of the head(whether middle or toe). Having the balance higher up allows us more chances to get closer to the distance we were striving for.

Matt is an excellent ball striker and certainly a very low handicap but when he makes those comments, he is specifically referring to someone with a plus handicap. Maybe not a tour pro but a player with a +2 or +3 handicap. It's amazing the difference between a 2-3 handicap and a +2 or +3...doesn't seem like much, but they're miles apart actually.

I think that is the point. Some want to see how they perform with inconsistent strikes and if dispersion is reduced. If you have a low handicapper that strikes it consistently in the sweet spot then you aren’t testing the forgiveness. So, it would be an accurate review for a high handicapper.

I have never been fitted by anyone that said for 4 & 5 iron you should have x, for 6 through 9 y and for wedges z. And I have never been fitted off of grass, rough and sand. I tried the 58 yesterday. I already play Mizuno s18 wedges in 50, 54 & 58. For me the ES21s do not fly as far as the S18s but as I never hit a full shot with a 58 that is not really a problem. The biggest difference for me was the weight. ES21 felt a lot heavier than the S18s. I am not sure I like that or not, I would need to play a lot more with them to be certain. The problem with the S18s is that if I catch the ball a touch high on the face, the distance drop off is big. I get the impression that the same issue with the ES21 would be lot less severe. Fluffy lies with the ball standing a little proud of the ground are a problem for me, the ES21 might be a good option. Oh, and even on a cold and wet day the feel from the club was really good I would definitely play it, just need to do some more testing with a demo club in real world conditions

Don't forget guy's. Good players use the toe of a wedge to get height and reduced distance. When I was learning, I spent hours learning how to hit that toe hook high spinning dead shot by deliberately hitting it on the toe. Doesn't feel great, but is a required shot sometimes. These new wedge designs are taking that shot away. Wedges are not hit full all that often by good players
