MIZUNO T20 WEDGES THE BACKSPIN TEST

Спорт

Mizuno T20 wedges reviewed and tested by Mark Crossfield and friends. See how the T20 wedges do in the back spin test when tested in dry and wet conditions. Mizuno wedges have been popular on both PGA and European tours for years see what makes these Grain Flow Forged golf wedges so popular and if the new T20 wedges live up to the Mizuno golf name. Mizuno golf clubs have been famous for soft feels and professional precision in design and the new MP20 range of irons seem to be following this trend. The T20 Mizuno wedges need to be able to blend with the MP20 sets so golfers get that Mizuno look feel and sound that they know and love. Make sure you get the best wedge for your golf game with a custom fit session the same way you would think about a fitting for your new driver or irons.

The wedge that gives you the most confidence.the wedge that looks right and fits your eye. Wedge play is such a difficult part of the game, approach the shot feeling as confident as you can, and wanting to hit the club you have . Wedges from the top manufacturers are all very similar, personnel preference . I agree with all you say about the ability to test spin. Great video, thanks for your efforts.

To be honest I bought my wedges because I found a great deal on a set of 3 that matched the loft gaps I like (50, 54, 58). They happened to be black Glide 2.0 stealth and it was a bonus that I really liked the looks. Learned to adapt to using them as I played and practiced more.

Mark i agree 100%. When these wet tests started coming out i was admittedly sold on this being a legit thing. However after looking at all the data from all these test what i noticed is almost always the increased launch makes up for the lack of spin when wet. Dispersion stays the same. A wet wedge seems to fly higher and land softer with less spin but overall they still end up where it would have dry. Its a non factor in my opinion now, i will clean my face off before shots and if its lift and clean i will do so, but im really not going to worry about a wet ball.

I just placed an order for 3 new T20's. I have been waiting for the T7 replacements for some time now. My main reasons for purchasing are look, feel and consistency. I game forged MP18 irons and these fit in my bag with MP18's really well as far as looks and set flow are concerned.

Now I have game improvement irons and hit much better - G Max, 6 -W. I grabbed a set of Glide 2.0’s online...a 52, 56 and 60. Now lots of practice! The extra mass at the top of the wedge is to increase vertical moi according to Chris Voshall. He's got to be the best, most well spoken and articulate Mizuno rep anywhere. He spent some time with the TXG boys (Ian and Matt) in Toronto talking about and testing the MP20's. The intimation was that most companies have been preoccupied with horizontal moi (lateral forgiveness). Mizuno recognized that, with wedges in particular, there was room for improvement. There's nothing like a Mizuno. The MP20 HMB is breaking hearts all around the world!

Love it boys. #thickandcreamyspin I wonder though whether it really matters what the "drop off" is in wet and dry conditions (not taking varying strike conditions into consideration). Its not like someone, other than Bryson DeChambeau, is going to have multiple sets of wedges sitting in their garage waiting to be chosen depending on the weather conditions when they wake up for their 7Oclock tee off. Or are they going to take a good dry wedge and a good "wet" wedge with them incase the weather changes? Also, regardless of tge spin off the face a ball isnt going to stop if you are firinf into a hard green with a layer of dew on no mattet how much spun you have generated off the face.

Wondering if Mizuno put some Boron in the T20s. I think I read they did so in the S18s to make the grooves more durable. My experience of playing the JPX 825 Pros vs the 850 Pros (850s had Boron, the 825 did not) was that the 850s had a bit of click to them. Greatly enjoy your content. Cheers!

i play off 6 and i think that most weekend golfers are more concerned about the spin they get on the full shots with their wedges.ie 52 54 56 58 60 degree.not on 20 40 50 yard shots especially from the rough thats why we like your vids on full shots better.because you middle it a bit more often than us it gives us a better idea of maximum spin obviously depending on swing speed.this way normal players can narrow it down to a few brands before then looking at spin rates for half shots bad lies etc.keep up the good work.heres a thought since conforming grooves what is the wedge that has given u the highest and most spin on full shots?

Does wedge spin matter if it's wet? If it's rained or is raining then the ball will stop quicker on the green because the green will be wet too, hence you don't need more spin if the course is wet

Feel is most important to me with all clubs, especially wedges. By feel, I mean how the club feels when I hold it, swing it, and hit a ball with it. I am not talking about sound particularly. For instance, a clicky wedge is just fine with me if it passes the feel test. Looks? As long as the wedge is not so ugly as to be totally unappealing, I don't care how it looks.

Mygolfspy test showed that wet club wet ball and wet ground all contribute about the same and add together. So only a wet ground with a dry ball and clubface would reduce about 1/3 as much. They also found some clubs are like the mizuno and ping and jaws like you have wet tested and others have huge drop offs. I would say test some wedges without face killing and I bet the difference is a lot greater

  • @wallstreetoneil

    4 жыл бұрын

As a general rule of thumb, good players will have a launch angle of 28 to 30 degrees with their 56/60 degree wedges as spin / friction pulls the ball down - or as another generalization, take the loft of the club divide by 2 and take 2 more off as the launch angle so 60 / 2 -2 = 28 degrees if you are really good at consistent contact

Interesting that you guys think the new T20 wedges are clicky because the S18 wedges are absolutely not in my opinion - it might be the infused boron in the metal to make the grooves last longer. I buy my wedges on bounce and then have them all custom ordered at the same length (35.75") so that they are all the same (I did this because I learned the game on a set of rusty Cleveland CG12 RTG DSGs and they were all the same length).

Ultimately the only way to do scientific testing is with a robot delivering the same loft and speed every time. Overall the test shows there is a differences in how well different wedges retain spin in the wet. At the moment the overall KZread testing seems to demonstrate that Ping is very good at that and I can see why the finish ought to effect that . But whilst it may be an interesting statistic has it any relevance in the real world? As Mark has said no one should buy wedges based on spin numbers - all the quality wedges spin enough for most people if you deliver the club face and strike correctly. If you are worried about how much spin you lose in the wet there is a simple solution -DRY YOUR WEDGE before hitting the shot! Actually even if you do not dry the club the testing shows that the ball will launch a bit higher in the wet and if both ball and club are wet there is a high chance the green will be a bit damp as well so a higher launching but less spinning ball might stop just as quickly due to the softer and more receptive green.

Wet mat testing for spin is pretty ridiculous. You can hit a terrible strike and still spin it off of a mat. Grain flow forging isn't really forged. They are cast the struck. Mizuno says its the best of both worlds. I find it interesting that the copper layer is perceptibly softer since copper is not only very caustic but also very hard.

Lockey's dry ball data on the t20 has spin rates that jump from 2000rpm from his best to his worst strikes and similarly 2000rpm difference on his wet ball data on the t20 from worst to best strikes. Shows the club will only perform as good as the player whereas the txg guys are a little more consistent than what you can provide in testing. Just because you did not see the results in testing due to difference in swing does not mean its a end all be all test. I'd like to think you'd be a little more open to the results other testers have provided.

Sorry, what golf course has a robot lawnmower?! That seems totally ridiculous, no?! 😂

Mark I disagree about speed equals chance for more slip. When water (or grass) gets between the ball and club I'd think the more speed the more you can use the grooves to remove said water (or grass).

Spin ingredients are clear and not mine 👍 Strike spin loft speed. Then you throw all the variables into the mix 👍

Can you boys do a test where you dip the wedge and ball in mayonnaise and see what happens 😂

I've already done that test. It results in delicious shots.

Sorry - I'll come back later, maybe- if I want to sit around and listen to roofers work. Too bad too - wanted to hear what these guys had to say--

The wet 'drop off' was 26% for Mizuno, 17% for Ping, but at the end of the day there is more spin rpm in both wet and dry conditions with the Mizuno, so seems pretty meaningless really.. if it's wet you adjust, if you want more spin then buy the Mizuno. Haven't seen your wet test methodology (was it the dip the head in the bucket way?), but if you cared you would be wiping your club before hitting and the real world difference is probably minimal water on the ball and grass. And certain grasses are already pretty slimy wet when crushed between club and ball. We need a robot test to split these hairs...
