A timely and informative video given all the cameras coming out that are touting huge resolutions (12k?!) Worth reminding that IMAX still projects their images in approximately 2.9K, which I always find a humbling reminder that more doesn't necessarily equal better.

That’s only partially true. A lot of IMAX theaters have switch to dual laser 4K projection which is actually justified in the case of that giant screen that’s so close to the audience. Take a look at this demo: yedlin.net/ResDemo/index.html

As an enthusiast-only very beginning documentary shooter I so agree that storage is a massive problem when trying to deal with filming and editing even short films. It's hard to believe how many gigabytes are needed by even short films at 1080p!

I do photography and some video, but whenever I do a video project, I'm not always sure which resolution would be best for that specific use case. Cool topic, thanks for sharing!

Well my opinion is it relay depend what you want do with the Image later! For example in my Case I want maybe use the Picture 5, 10, 20, 30,... Years later again to show how it was back then. With Analogue Film you can restore A LOT Digitally but with Digital Images in a Bad Quality you are quite screwed. On a Press Conference for example I would be able to use a Wide-angle lens and shot the hole People on the "Stage" and Zoom in later in Software that give a perfect way to handle spontaneous situation. Another think is cropping for stables Images. The same for "new" ways of filming. I want to film from a Train Driver perspective. Onboard I cant do that much and it must run autonomous. The only way is by Optical Zoom and Crop later when the going into a corner (or how to say in english). So for my a big resolution is another tool to make a Budget film.

You’re right, Felicia. I do not need 8K...I need 12K. :-) . Joking. My laptop can’t even play or cut 4K files. Poor me.

PRIVATE haha don’t worry. I only shoot only digital as tests/practice until I can afford film 🎞 . I’m sticking to 16mm and 35mm for my motion picture lust. Got my first cinema camera recently: C300MKI. I don’t need any more resolution than that.

Well said, people greatly underestimate how much media and storage costs. Also never understood why people get hooked by the K's of resolution, I have shot with some garbage cameras over the years and currently shoot 720i for work day in day out and its never stopped me effectively conveying a story. Also people using high resolution cameras: "Yeah the camera image looks to digital, we need to soften it with vintage lenses to make it more organic".... making the high resolution redundant if the lens doesnt resolve as much detail. Ah shit I had better stop I could rant about how fucked peoples logic is all day.

Ok, there’s even some misunderstanding about resolution in this video. I’m going to link to a demo by the cinematographer of Looper, The Last Jedi, and Knives Out, Steve Yedlin. He’s a massive nerd and has put 35mm film, regular Alexa, Sony 4K, Red 6K, Alexa 65, and IMAX 65mm Film scanned at 11K site by site, analysts their resolutions and scientifically shows how resolution actually works: How we don’t need to shoot and let alone master in a higher resolution than 2K and how we make image quality actively worse by upping the resolution when delivering. Anybody who is a camera person in the industry or wants to be a camera person in the industry should watch this. As well as everyone who’s thinking about buying a camera or TV for its resolution.

Yedlin's presentations are mind blowing and incredibly useful! Everyone should go over to his site: yedlin dot net (no idea if YT messes with actual links.) Watch his "Resolution Demo" and "Display Prep Demo." The better informed we all are as consumers/an industry, the more positive pressure can be put on camera manufacturers to produce cameras that are actually better rather than merely "higher spec'ed."

@PRIVATE In the "good old days" there were likely cinematographers who knew a couple of film stocks, knew a few sets of lenses, knew a few lights and knew that a specific lab would know how they liked their film processed, and those people could shoot good films (serve the story) without understanding much about film chemistry. But any cinematographer today needs to have a decent grasp of the issues Yedlin is discussing. They don't need to understand it as much in depth as Yedlin does, of course. The craft and technology of capturing, processing and presenting moving images is changing rapidly, and professionals in that field need to understand a fair amount of this "uber technical" stuff in order to serve the story and do their job as part of the team that brings the work to life. Just because a good story shot on a potato is better than a bad story shot beautifully doesn't mean that it isn't important for good stories don't to be shot, graded and presented beautifully. Directors, etc. don't need to understand this, but someone on many projects needs to understand why shooting on a 2.7k camera can look better than on a 8k camera. This stuff is exactly why Felicia is pointing out that "but it's 8k!!!" doesn't necessarily mean "it's better!"

@PRIVATE I agree with you but to be honest. If you want a job people expect you to know how to get this shit right and most clients tend to care more about cool technical terms rather then art. I've had buisness and music video clients roll their eyes when talking about the artistic ideas and then responding with "Yeah, yeah, but can you shoot 6k and 120fps and with a ArRi-ReD-aLExa-EpIcDrAgOn?" And you just think "Dude... we are making a business pitch video... you don't need that..." but it gets you the job if you can say yes.

I completely agree. That’s the main reason why 2K is enough for even high-end movie productions. DPs don’t often crop into the picture because they choose lenses and framing with intent for story telling. But filmmakers have always been technicians and it helps me especially to express my art through technology like lens choices and photographic look. That doesn’t mean that I’m not mainly concerned with story as well and that everything else falls behind that. But not knowing the boundaries around the technology we’re using, means we’re prune to be using it wrong. I’m urging you to watch both Steve Yedlins Resolution Demo and especially his Display Prep Demo to see how we’re actually less artist when we don’t embrace control and knowledge over technology. Yedlin is much better than I am at explaining this anyway. And as it’s said in the video, changing resolution for example, can have a huge effect on the budget a DP has at their disposal. A lot of uneducated DP or directors will go for a higher resolution capture medium because they think it will result in a higher quality image. That cost factor might limit them later on in their story telling decisions, by not allowing them to rent the right (maybe more expensive or expressive) lenses for the show or the light that might be better and so on and so forth. Just because you‘re thinking about technology a lot doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have enough brain space left to think about story too. Yedlin is a prime example for that. You cannot tell me that The Last Jedi or Knives Out aren’t incredibly well told visual story with all the artistry in them because there’s incredibly sophisticated technology behind the photographic looks of these films. I have worked the last nine moths on my photographic look, thinking about different shades of minute colors every time was outside and wondered how my color pipeline would process it. But now that it’s finished I can simply apply it as a user and focus my attention on story. I agree that too many people are thinking too much about technology, especially on KZread, but in the end those are unlikely to make it if they can’t think about story first.

Thanks for the awesome discourse, everyone! I guess the point of my video was to help newcomers realise that you don't need to shoot in super high resolutions and often less is more. It's about being practical and as I stated at the end of the video, it's about knowing what the a certain resolution can do for your project. I LOVE Yedlin and his technical mind and I love to be technical (because it's a big part of my job at a DP) but with this video I wanted to focus less on the technical and more on the practical implications for people wanting to shoot on these crazy high resolutions. Again, thanks so much for all these comments! I really love hearing your thoughts and seeing these sorts of discussions ♥️
