Conquest and Fall of Constantinople - Part 7 - The Rise of Saladin

splendid, as usual. i've read that Manuel Komnenos, in the eventuality that he would die with no male heir, promised his eldest daughter, Maria Komnenos's hand in marriage to the future king of Hungary, Bela III. he was brought to Constantinople to be educated in the matters of the state, but... all this was undone by the birth of his son Alexios. what was supposed to be a triumph for the continuation of the Komnenos dynasty resulted in the destruction of the empire.

Side note: I really hoped that you wouldn't make the mistake of bringing up Saladin's sister as a the reason for Saladin's war with the kingdom of Jerusalem as it's probably apocryphal, and is only mentioned in one French source while all other sources including Islamic ones deny or do not even mention this incident.

Raynald de Chatillon seems to have done more damage to the Crusader cause than their enemies did. He had already proven himself to be a liability by raiding Byzantine Cyprus, marrying the princess of Antioch against her subject's wishes, then torturing the city's Patriarch into giving him funds. By all accounts Saladin was an honourable man. He may have intended to attack Jerusalem at some point, regardless of Raynald's actions, but he seems to have honoured truces. Breaking the truce by raiding caravans was a stupid move, especially given the strength of the Ayyubid empire. After refusing to make reparations to Saladin, King Guy of Jerusalem should have cut Raynald loose and told Saladin to attack him and take Kerak castle for compensation. Maybe that would have prevented the loss of Jerusalem; at the least it would have given the Crusaders more time. Great episode as always, I look forward to the next one. It's not often in history when a military genius meets his match.

Awesome comment - I agree Raynald was a hot head and while he was utilized well for his aggressive stance - especially at the Battle of Montgisard - he would eventually cross the line at some point. As for the what's coming up next - again, spot on - rarely do two great generals in history meet like this.
