Conqueror of Shamballa: Wasted Potential

Ойын-сауық

This is a video talking about the flaws of Conqueror of Shamballa, the movie that concludes the FMA 2003 series. I'll be giving my thoughts on the parts this movie could improve upon as well as try and give solutions to the problems that I had with this film.

FMA 03 was supposed to receive a 12-13 episode epilogue that would essentially be a much more fleshed out version of CoS. But due to Studio Bones beginning work on FMA 2009/Brotherhood, the staff behind 2003 was forced to scrap the idea and make it into three movies. Then those movies had to be cut down to a single three-hour one, and then cut down again to the final result we have. If you look up "FMA Conqueror of Shamballa prototype" you'll can find a script with a bunch of cut content with more focus on Alphonse, Alfons and Noah, as well as explanations for certain events and concepts in the movie that were otherwise confusing. So yeah, CoS was basically a mish mash of ideas as a result from being cut down and truncated so many times for reasons out of the 2003 staff's control. That being said I still find the movie enjoyable, but I can't help but wonder how much better it would've been if they went with 12-13 epilogue instead.

I've heard this always, but more about supposedly it being far more than an extra 12-13 episodes, or essentially another season... But more so, I hear it was as ridiculous as another 100 to 150... I don't recall who or what made that claim in comparison, but regardless... It does make sense as to why the movie feels cut-down... Yet... With that in mind, it is easier to be not AS critical with it... Same as you though, I have always wondered what the extra season or even seasons could have been like in full... Cause this could have been far better with that extra length, I'm not even a fan who criticizes the connection to the real world Germany pre WW2, it's interesting enough when Amestris always had inspiration from Nazi Germany.

The reason why Nazis are important is Nazis did try to go get to "Shamballa" in real life, Many high-ranking members of the Nazi regime, including Hitler, but especially Himmler and H Prompted, held occult beliefs. and they did a lot of experiments and research of just about anything supernatural. The Germans sent an official expedition to Tibet between 1938 and 1939 at the invitation of the Tibetan Government to attend the Losar (New Year) celebrations , Their mission was first to find and then to maintain contact with the Aryan forefathers in Shambhala and Agharti, hidden subterranean cities beneath the Himalayas. They also believed in hollow earth, British novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton, in The Coming Race, described a superior race, the Vril-ya, who lived beneath the earth and planned to conquer the world with vril, a psychokinetic energy, (not too far off from the idea alchemy in the anime) and many other silly things. So in the Anime our villain thinks she got to Shamballa but in reality she got to the other side of the door.

I liked four things about this movie 1. The intro 2. Wrath vs Gluttony 3.Roy,Ed,and Al confronting Echart 4.the art style and animation upgrade (2003 looked good too but it's definitely improved in this movie besides the cgi suits of armor) And besides that nothing else really I did think it was a decent movie but it was barely at decent it had tons of problems and the worst thing they did was make my boy Envy have one little fight and be used as a plot device ._. also the ending doesn't really fit with the themes of FMA like the original series ending but good video hope you make more FMA 03 content

I've seen Shamballa multiple times and it really saddens me that the film ended up the way it did. Hell even the production team and voice actors(Japanese ones) from what I understand weren't happy with final product ether. The ideas for a great story/epilogue were there and it pisses me off they weren't fully explored. I know it won't happen but I would love a 3-4 hour cut of the film of a 12-13 sequel. P.S. saw some of your videos and consider me subscribed. I got into anime because of the original FMA and it's 1 of my favorite franchises.

If nothing else, Nazi Maes Hughes will haunt my nightmares. I get what they were going for, but it was so poorly done that it kinda taints the character for me. When I finished 2003, I waited a couple months to watch Shamballa but minus a couple scenes, it wasn't great. Al's character, in both worlds, should have been used more. That at least would have made it a bit more compelling. Also, as a huge history buff, the little anecdotes about the Treaty of Versailles and The Beer Hall Putsch were interesting and gave context to the year of the movie, but felt shoehorned in. If they were trying to go for a historical element, they should have went all the way with it instead of just letting it fill up screen time. Great video, i've been loving this channel!

I liked Shamballa for what it is and how it expanded on the parallel worlds reveal, which did come very late in FMA 03. Even so, it could have been much better. Apparently, the original draft was about three hours long and that would have been much better. Expanding on the alternate versions of the Amestrian characters would have been very interesting-- particularly the alternate Mustang (who we never see), alternate Scar, Lust, etc... Ideally, Shamballa would have been Fullmetal Alchemist Part 2-- maybe as long as 51 episodes, showing both brothers in their attempts to reach each other amongst backdrops of war. Envy and Hohenheim were the biggest disappointments for me-- I wish Envy were the main antagonist, maybe in his human form (serpent could have worked too I guess), and expanding on Hohenheim's relationship with him. The best way to see Shamballa is as a recap movie of a whole series that unfortunately doesn't exist. I can't really blame the writers though given that they forced to strip the story down to 90 minutes. In part, I blame brotherhood-- Bones didn't want to do more with the original anime because they were planning on doing a more accurate manga adaptation. Alas, they robbed us of a truly epic story. I still appreciate it for what it is, and was satisfied with the ending though.

Yep, I should have known this was coming, and boy it is missed opportunity. WHY was this not the Hohenheim/Dante backstory? It could have even work as a stand alone film, no need for context of any sort to understand. They could have started to explain why Dante was so infatuated by Hohenheim? it Is pretty clear Hohenheim was a handsome heartbreaker obsessed with alchemy but did they ever have any chemistry or was Mr. Ho just playing her the whole time? Envy is their child so... that could have worked as perfect catalyst to why they were desperate to make the philosopher's stone in the first place, at least for Hohenheim if you want to play around just "immortality" motivation and give it more depth. Here is a cool idea for this kind of film, feel free to change the names and places as you want: Hohenhiem is reading an alchemy book to Dante about mysterious wizard named Merlin from country of Shamballa who carried a mystical red stone with him at all times which allowed him to do seemingly impossible magic tricks (alchemy) and throw in some basic stuff you need to know about how alchemy works. Then establish Hohenheim's and Dante's personality a bit in 1500's. They have a child together who Im naming Bob (envy). But Bob dies tragically and they start seeking this red stone that made impossible possible. (fill in their adventures) and then we get to the only scene in 03 that showed this backstory a bit. Hohenheim tries to resurrect Bob with the stone and horrified by his creation of this soulless being that looked like him he decided to run away (like Ed does after he tried to bring someone back). So there, I could continue to rip apart this version but its beating a dead horse at this point so feel free to rip this idea a new one for me but be respectful while doing so. This video was a treat again and I see your sub count climbing higher slowly, keep up the good work fish boi :)

So as much as I love this movie cuz it brings conclusion to characters like Wrath and the end of the movie is just fine for the theme of the series, with its bittersweet ending, I'm really upset by all the deleted scenes they left out. (I have a post with a whole long list of COS deleted scenes if you want to see it)/ For one there was a lot more dialogue with Alfons and Wrath, but Two scenes from the script in particular that stood out to me was: Winry's conversation with Roy and her stopping him from quitting the military because his dumb ass was about to give up on everything he'd worked towards. It would have been AWESOME for a conclusion to Winry's character arc, and shown agency on her end considering Roy had shot her parents in this series. And the scene in the script where Izumi dies which was completely DELETED from the movie. She died hugging Wrath, saying "I'll give you a real life" when Wrath says he's not human. It would have added so much emotion to Wrath's sacrifice and rejoining Izumi in the gates and why he finally had acknowledged her as his mother. There was other stuff too like final words from Hohenheim about Envy, etc. But dude I can't believe they chose to leave out these scenes. karinakamichi.tumblr.com/post/165044022529/all-fullmetal-alchemist-conquerors-of-shambala

They could've done soo much more. I really wanna see a remake of this movie. They should focus more on Ed at the beginning and the alternative characters from his world (his mom, Mustang and Hawkeye, Izumi, more interactions with Maes and less with Bradley, some Armstrong would be nice, they could've tried to sneak in Ling, Lan Fan, Mai for a bit and etc). 40 minutes are enough for that, then we can go to Amestris for 40 more minutes and then we can end the movie in 15-20 minutes. +,- some parallel scenes from Amestris while Ed is in the other world we got a solid 1:40 movie. Soo many options and then did almost nothing.

So I don't hate Conqueror of Shamballa. I acknowledge that it really isnt that good, but I dont hate it. The way I see it, '03 ended up being this 'opposite side of the coin' take of the manga. Like, the manga makes sure that you know that with enough hard work and sacrifice, you can reach the goal you seek. But '03 always sought to flip Equivalent Exchange on its head. Nothing is fair, equivalency doesnt exist, do everything right and you still may be denied your happy ending. The first time I watched Shamballa, seeing how Winry had been waiting for Ed that whole time, prepared for his return, and then, after 5 minutes, is left without him or Al, is such a gut punch. I hate it. But that hate for it is also something I love, because I feel like it plays into '03's sense of futility so well. It's sad and it's not fair, but she's has no choice but to be happy that at least the two of them are together again. Theres just this sense of collateral beauty that I kinda love about Shamballa, like with Wrath dying, but being reunited with Izumi, and the Winry thing, and even with us as viewers, just having to find some bittersweet happiness in the film.

7:22 about Alphonse being able to place parts of his soul in armor through alchemy, and the question of how... Being real, the kid had his soul in a suit of armor since they failed to bring their mom back in both continuities... So the idea of passing his soul around to armor is still plausible to a degree, just being real since the series was always not JUST science fully like it always acted as it was. If the movie specifically got to be that series extension it was initially intended to be, to have the breathing room of an extra season or more, it would have done a lot to help the super ambitious storyline. I don't hate the idea of connecting pre WW2 Germany and the Nazi party into the storyline in the real world, since Amestris was took inspiration from Nazi Germany itself, I think even Hughes is actually a real life Nazi soldier even too... Which... Is a trip... I think they wanted to explore those parallels in a more direct and in depth way, and that's why you get such a huge focus on the moments leading up to the major formation of the Nazi party... It definitely, however, was a huge part of what ate up the movie run-time itself, and slowed down the other more FMA centered storytelling, which is the real shame of course. In the end, it just wasn't meant to be a movie, and I so wish they had the chance to have made that extra season or more, whether Ed and Al both end up in the real world by the end anyways or not, I think it just got too suffocated by the timeframe it had to work in. If it even got the chance to be a 2 part or 3 part movie, it might have helped, but when you have the context of it being SO much longer and bigger in scale, as a whole new season at the least... It's clear they tried to tackle that long-term storytelling, in a 2 hour film, to its detriment that leaves it bloated with context and backstory over the actual main story... It's probably forever telling Alphonse ended up at the end, with the commentary by the Japanese VAs even being surprised he was still there at the end of it all. What could have been...

Looking back in retrospect, I see the flaws pretty blatantly now. Still holds a special place in my heart. I sorta liked the ending though. How Al made it through the portal too, and how we thought it was just a soul transfer suit of armor but was actually him in the flesh. A whole new world for them both to explore together. Just felt almost bleak though, as we know this worlds history gets quite dark. To know they had some hardships ahead of them, filled me with sadness. But it felt almost right. 😅😂😂

One thing I was confused about is that we skipped over the most interesting and important part of the story: the introduction to the world, not only for us, but for Ed. For instance, how did Ed get his new arm and leg, and what was it like before he did? How did he and Al #2 meet? He would probably start in a bad headspace and situation, seeing as he probably doesn't know anyone when he first arrives, and he was apparently still missing his limbs, so why couldn't we have more development of that? Make it so that Ed is in shambles at the start, and then Al the Second helps him get a job and new limbs and a somewhat stable emotional state, and develop their relationship with that. Then give Ed back some of his independence, and start the actual plot. Also, a pacing issue I noticed immediately while watching this movie: we spend way too much time on the unimportant parts and shots, and way too little time with any explanations, backstories of the villains, and development of the characters, leaving us with the feeling that so much time was spent on absolutely nothing.

Part of the reason why I love Brotherhood more than the 2003 version is simply because it has a more coherent ending, with a very climatic battle that pays off a lot from what was set up before hand. But in the CoS movie, the new villains are nowhere near as interesting as Dante or the Homunculi were, not enough characters are given the proper development, and the decision to have Ed and Alphonse stranded on Earth didn’t sit right with me. Maybe if this had been given the 15 episode treatment like originally planned or even allowed to be the film trilogy, maybe I could have liked it more. But as it is, despite some good moments and being entertaining enough, I find this very disappointing.

I know I'm biased, and while I understand the thoughts and opinions, I disagree with a lot of it. Specifically when Al said, "Those were the best times we had." Just because something is hard doesn't mean that there weren't glimmers of good times there. Hard times does not equal not experiencing the best times. I guess you'd have to define what "best times" means, but because it doesn't really go into that, you can't really define it. But I was really young when I first saw this, and I didn't really question much of the writing. There are points you make that are really good. I do think the ending is bittersweet where it doesn't need to be.

For the whole bit at the end, I said that mainly as a joke, but there was some element of truth to that. The journey for the philosopher stone was never framed as a fun adventure story, it was a literal form of repenting for the elric Brothers. While that statement in a vacuum works for the scenario. If you really look at the way 2003 portrays the story in terms of its direction, dialogue, and thematic depth, that line doesn't really apply to it, which is why I mad that little jab at the end. I've never been a history person so that stuff was kind of lost on me, I felt like I missed out on appreciating the movie because I didn't get the historical stuff. Ed planning to leave Al on his own in Amestris made no sense to me either, considering their bond was like the most prominent and touching focus of the entire series. If it wasn't a movie but a season of 12 episode and if it starter like something like this , it would be something i retesting : Ed found a work , living alone in a little appartement and met the alter ego of trisha elric who is still alive in this world and living in the neighborhood . After spent years with Trisha , Ed is at the same time sad that he is separated from his brother and the other people he knows but at the Same time happy to spend time with the one who is mother in the and at . For Al , he's searching one way to bring back his brother (afer Izumi succumbed to her illness) . Roy and Riza are dating and every body help Alfonse as much they can. After the death of his creator , wrath is depressed , and leades Alfonse to the place he appeared in central (Mustang escorts them) . And at this place they fought against dante foun ; who found a way to moderate rotting (by replacing some of her organs by them of healthy one and replacing her skin cells by mineral one) but can't be as much actives due to that and still control glutony . She lives near her cave and spent the major part of her time to search a way to transfer her soul again or at least restore completely her body . She knows that Ed brought back Alfonse . Seeing Al , Mustang and Wrath, She thinks it's an opportunity to take her revenge on them for prevented her to take a new body . Using alchemy to alter the her face by altering her face structure, She approached them and lies them she is a vagabond who was searching a place where spend night and found this one and decided to lives there because she had no house . She conceive them and leaded them to a Trap and tried to kill them with gluttony and alchemy . Envy (who in the other world has humain form) is stiil same who oike to see people suffer and live in the street with a lot of delinquents . He sees Ed by chance one day and wanted to kill him but saw he is with someone who looks like sloth , he understands it's the alter ego of mother of elric brother . He thinks that would be a better idea to make him suffer instead kills him . This kind of screenplay (or any screenplay who would be different but also emotionally strong) is what I expected for the end of fma .

the 2003 ending was blah because it didn't fit with the first half of the story. I enjoyed the fake Elric Brothers, the Humuculus differences, Tucker's transformation, and the twist of how alchemy is powered at the end. But the main story fell apart in the second half. Brotherhood does a way better job of a coherent story... and deserves the movies not the 2003

And Truth be told I pretty must can relate to Edward and Alphonse because my father passed away 4 to 5 years ago, and I know how it fells to lose a parent and having to deal with loss.

Wasn't the point of human transmutation that you can never put a price on another persons soul? It would be too valuable. But if it's your own, who says you don't determine the price of YOUR OWN soul? It's you. It belongs to no one else but you. So who says you can't temporarily infuse it into soulless objects, or a portion? The whole reason Ed was able to put Al's soul into armor was because Al wasn't really dead, so his soul could at least be moved right? At the cost of a limb. Even if the homunculus in 2003 could have memories, they don't have souls the way living people do. They're closer to the way Nobodies in KH are, but they won't just sudden;y have a soul like it was revealed for Hearts and Nobodies in KH. They'll remain incomplete until something sends them to the gate, and with Wrath, it gave him what he wanted. Even Envy got what he wanted by killing Hohenheim in this movie. So for a homunculus they don't have souls because they had completely died before someone tried to transmute them. But I'm pretty sure Al wasn't dead like the Elrics mother was. Think of it like me selling someone elses car, vs my car. They determine what price their car is worth. Not me. But I can always decided to sell my car for whatever price. Even if no one buys it, I ALONE DETERMINE WHAT I'LL TAKE AS PAYMENT FOR IT. So I can determine what to do with it. So Al sending a portion of his soul through what's basically scientific magic, isn't actually breaking rules, if we look back at what the rules on human transmutation are, and the circumstances they always tend to fall in. Someone trying to take a dead persons soul and think that whatever they have to give is somehow worth it. Not their own soul. Just because you have the material for a persons body to be recreated, doesn't mean you could ever find anything worth someones soul. But if it's your own, it's free game to do with it as you please, so long as it's not trying to take someone elses soul. So I think your question on the souls in the armor thing and human transmutation was REALLY lacking in some critical thought. Like huge important information just "slips" your mind as if you forgot you watched the original 2003 anime. Even in Brotherhood, the only instance off the top of my head mimicking this is Ed turning HIS SOUL, into a stone. But it's still his soul, and no one elses.

More like that’s what happens when the studio forces you to truncate your 13 episode 5 hour ova conclusion into a 2 hour movie because they wanted to rush into preproduction for a faithful adaptation. So it has more to do with corporate meddling and undermining than it does with not being faithful to the source material. The tv ending of 03 was rather strong but most people who appreciate agree that CoS was a waste of potential (see etheri0n’s other videos, Lowart’s videos, and Goat Jesus’ videos.)

@@haosmagnaingram6992 It's fine, you're free to be wrong 😉 Jokes aside, however, I also like 2003 better until it gets close to the end and it answer almost none of my big questions about the world and its characters. It's cool that the creator contributed to the show, and I'm certain it wouldve been better than Brotherhood had it been given around 70 episodes or so, but it's not what was added that bothered me. It was what was never dealt with. It's not that there is anime original content, it's that some of the content they had was never given proper narrative closure. Too many loose ends. It had a nearly perfect score around halfway through (let's say 95/100). But it lost points for not giving closure for Winry and Ed, not exploring the world very much by ignoring all the other countries, not allowing Ed to ever physically grow and not telling us if he'd get his whole body back or not, and some other things like that. Sill 90/100. It just started so strong and introduced so much but didn't follow through with everything. Was it because of the studio, loke you said? Probably. But it had already avoided the Winry/Ed romance for far too long before that, so who knows.

My headcanon ending is that the film ends when Ed gets back to Amestris in the rocket lol, and him and Al defeat Eckhart, the armor guys, and find a way to close the gate Cuz nowhere in the original 2003 anime was it stated the gate had to be closed from both sides. And like ya said, how TF would that even be possible if alchemy doesn't even work in our world? So Ed basically just takes what he learned in our world and uses it to develop and care about other world's/countries/people more, and, for example, perhaps use that growth to ride off into sunset to Xing like in Mangahood and study and help the Xingese like in mangahood?(I know Xing isn't a thing in 03 but fuck it, if not that, then maybe Ishval since they seem to mirror the Roma/gypsies?) Also marrying Winry like in mangahood cuz it's OTP So basically just mash the first hour and 20 minutes and Mangahoods ending together lol. Still doesn't fix the rest of the movie of course, just the ending, that's all I proposed.

I really like the whole parallel world idea in FMA 2003, to me it was a really unique idea and I think it gives alchemy another layer that it just lacked in brotherhood. Definitely made the whole story darker since alchemists are essentially using these people as human batteries. It just sucks that the writers didn’t do more with it. I honestly feel like the writers should’ve made it an alternate history story instead and that way they would’ve had more freedom to create their own unique story ideas and wouldn’t have to play by history’s rules.
