Conquering Stage 4 Cancer: How I Deal with Scanxiety

Today’s video comes fresh after the 10 mile walk yesterday to raise money and most importantly the awareness of prostate cancer here in the uk.
Today I’m talking about a few tips I have used to beat the scanxiety that many of us quite naturally go through when living with cancer and through the various treatment process we go through.
The golden rule is it’s all in the mind and it’s what you do with your mind that makes a huge difference to how you cope.
I’m sharing the link to my just giving page if you wish to put something towards our total for the walk which goes to a charity called Prostate Cancer Uk
Thank you for watching this video, I’ve been making these videos as a vlog sharing my journey through Advanced Metastatic Prostate Cancer.
My world literally fell apart on Sept 15th 2021 when I was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer which according to my Oncologist is incurable (although ive never accepted that) Questions such as how long have I got left how bad is it , in fact, a whole host of frightening thoughts, where sudennly swarming around my mind and exploding at opportune moments when I felt most vulnerable.
If i were to be honest, I was lost and lonely to begin with. People don’t know how to deal with someone who has stage four cancer. It’s a taboo subject. I honestly didn’t know who to turn to for help. It can be a dark place and I only wish I could of found a channel such as this to help me through those early days.
I started writing a blog whilst I was in hospital and recovering at home after the initial treatment phase.
I then decided to make this vlog because it seemed a better way to get my story out there. I want to provide a channel where I would continue telling my story for as long as I can and invite comments from others that can also help and share their own experiences.
Cancer can be a lonely place, and I hope this channel will help someone else who may be a bit lost and feel alone whilst dealing with their own diagnosis and experience.
Nothing is ever as bad as you think it will be, and that seems to the case so far with my experience with Prostate Cancer.
Thank you for watching. Please comment and subscribe if you feel like it, and please share the videos with anyone you think may find them helpful

You said it best. Enjoying the sunshine at this moment. Best advice ever Woody. All the best with the scans. Have mine this month, as well as the Zoladex injection. Glad that medication is not bothering you. One moment at a time. Cheers mate. Regards Carl

So glad your walk for Prostate UK went well Woody. Thank you for your wise advice about coping with scanxiety. My husband is on a similar journey, diagnosed two and a half years ago and facing PSA and scan this month. The logical part of the brain might tell you there is no point in worrying as it won't affect the result, but it's so hard not to. I find playing the ukulele with other people requires total concentration and is a good distraction. And you don't have to be very good either! Good luck on Thursday. Will be thinking of you.

Thank you, I think the ukelele is a brilliant idea I’ve just purchased an acoustic guitar so I’m going to have a go and see if it can help. I have heard others say about learning to play an instrument it’s a great thing to do to take the mind off the cancer. Best wishes to you on your journey 🙏

It appears the new CT scan was a cock up as I had one just two weeks previous to this one. Reasonable news I suppose, the emergence of a new tumor but most of the rest are disappearing so in all better than the oncologist expected

Exciting prospects in the fight against Cancer, my oncologist predicted things would get better if I can stay alive long enough. 🙏

Best of luck. The scanxiety can be frustrating. I'm lucky, I usually get my results through electronic portal the same day or early next day. Problem with getting them fast is I have to interpret them myself. Not always fun.

That’s amazing, I generally wait around 4 to 6 weeks for scan results. I understand how difficult it must be to interpret them

Best of luck Woody. Scanxiety is so true, when I had my scans and biopsies last year the waiting done my head in, and used a lot of energy up, and in the end they were all fine, which is what the Urologist said they would be, but, as you say, we cant help feeling negative. Stay strong, new treatments avail all the time, best of luck mate❤
