Connie Haines - Beryl Davis - Rhonda Fleming - Jane Russell

Музыка

These 4 legendary ladies of movies and recording joined forces during the mid-1950s to form the Hollywood Christian Group to sing gospel songs. Albums, singles and TV appearances followed including this one - in which they perform a medley of spirituals. Connie, who sang with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey Bands during the 1940s, sadly died on 22 September 2008 at age 87. May this TV clip from 1954 serve as a tribute to the petite singer with the big voice. Rest in Peace Connie.

Rhonda Fleming's favourite singer was Deanna Durbin and she had her voice trained when she was young. She sang more on television than in the cinema but did sing a song in the film: Alias Jessie James 1959 starring Bob Hope. Like many actresses of her day she was multi-talented. Another great redheaded actress Maureen O'Hara had her voice trained by her opera singing mother. Again, she rarely sang in films but did record Irish ballads, one of which see sang in the film: The Quiet Man 1953. I have seen it said that the actor Dana Andrews was operatically trained but neve,r as far as I am aware, sang on film. Hollywood studios in the golden era sadly typecast their stars.

Sometimes you just never know. Especially when you see women movie stars like Jane Russell on the big screen and on the small screen. I loved Jane Russell and yet she didn't even know that I even existed, but I was practically born in the church and I studied music at the world famous Peabody conservative of music in the 70s , playing for gospel choirs all across the US,on the radio for churches and playing organ on television,if you can find out who I am, look me up on line in the Pentecostal organist guess book in the year 2000 pages...... here is a clue, I might be called the world's greatest apostolic gospel jubilee organist, well God bless their four souls white or black gospel in song has no color in my 🗣️ I will always love her but God loves us more than we can ever know,so Good he is so good to me...... Just Jesse.

Connie went on to present the TV Sunday school, 'Faith of Our Children'. In 1975 she became a minister of the Unity Church. Lovely to see Jane Russell witnessing, not long after she was slithering round those Olympic muscle men in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'.

Took Air Force basic training at Samson AFB in 1954, I was small town kid of 17 who was thrown in with 59 young men from many walks of life. They were from big cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland and from places that weren't even on the map of Kentucky, West "By God" Virginia and everywhere in between. Our first instruction was to march together in step and in a military manner. We heard other flights singing while marching and decided to do it as well. It improved our marching and helped band us together as a team. We sang Do Lord and some other spiritual type songs that made the training easier.

Thanks for posting this because it gives me some sense of where some of the C&W came from in the 50's. The sad part of this is that it is hard to recognize that these ladies were going about this with probably pure motive and from real Christian hearts, but coming from today where we are so jaded by Christianity being so polical we probably can't see the motive.
