Joan Rivers interviews Jane Russell

Things get a little awkward in this interview between Joan Rivers and Jane Russell. But Jane carries on in a professional manner. Incidentally, Joan was wrong. Jane wrote in her book that became pregnant and had an illegal abortion (which left her unable to have children) PRIOR to entering into a romantic affair with actor John Payne. More awkward moments come when Jane sings to Joan's husband, Edgar. May they all RIP.

I think Jane Russell was too down to earth for Joan. Joan wanted gossip, glitter, glam....I think Jane was more everyday, straight forward, take no prisoners. She was a tough woman who knew who she was.

@@DDumbrille ... No. Joan Rivers loved her profession, she loves celebrities, yes she loved gossip. But she also loved entertaining her audience. And she tried to get more out of Jane Russell than Jane Russell wanted to give. Which is strange, because Jane Russell was there to plug her autobiography. But Jane Russell was an honery kind of woman and you have to take her as she is. And after all these years, I now see Jane Russell as a good actress and a wonderful, wonderful singer, which she demonstrated right there. Joan Rivers was one of the best interviewers ever, and I miss her entertainment presence and always will.

@@Jasper7182009 You're right. Jane was there to plug her book. Rivers asked about some of the stuff in the book and Russell got all self-righteous and "holy." She did as she damn well pleased, when no-one wanted to play anymore she conveniently caught religion and became unbearably prissy and "moral" when it was to her advantage.

@@BlueRidgeMtns100 A) Jane Russell was always religious, re several sources I read, including her obituary in The Guardian. B) Jane did Not get pregnant from that guy Joan mentioned. Joan got it all wrong. Jane had an abortion after getting pregnant with the guy she Later Married. They didn't want to have the child out of wedlock. Sadly, the backstreet procedure was Botched and Ms. Russell got extremely ill and she was infertile after that. Jane and her husband adopted and raised three children. Jane later set up an adoption advocacy or charity organization or something called WAIF. She was a really good, cool person who Was tough and talented and Joan was a pest who didn't get her facts straight. She was trying to get Jane to talk about a very blatant subject and she was rude and it's Fantastic how Ms. Russell calmly did not take the bait.

Jane Russell was promoting her book. Jane Russell discussed her own abortion as well as her extramarital affairs in the book. If you write about these things in your autobiography and then go on talk shows to promote the book to increase sales, there is a good chance someone might bring those topics up, especially when you publicly speak about abortion and your own abortion at pro-life rallies. There is limited conversation in asking about Howard Hughes designing a bra for Jane Russell. Ms. Russell's film work was limited and lackluster and leads only to a few questions about what was Marilyn Monroe like in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Russell comes across as a nice enough person but not exactly sparkling.

It's interesting what's happening here though. Jane may seem boring in this interview but if you read her biography you'll find that she is everything but. The issue here is that Jane is being very laconic and modest when it comes to the risky topics in her autobiography. For example, Joan asks Jane about Howard Hughes and Jane says Howard was scared of women. If you read Jane's autobiography, Howard actually ended up in bed with Jane and tried to feel her breasts. I mean come on! How scared of women could Howard have been? Another example is when Joan asks Jane if men hit on her and Jane says no. In Jane's book, Jane not only had one but two extramarital affairs. So you can say that guys were more than enamored with her good looks. So Joan is basically trying to pull the grit of Jane's book out of this interview but Jane insist on being modest and laconic. So between Jane's extreme modesty and Joan's lack of a verbal filter, this makes for a very interesting interview. The dynamics!
