Connecting Nature and Education | Bandile Phiri | TEDxCalgary
Our education system got us to our current state of evolution, but Bandile Phiri doesn't believe it is right for the needs of future students. She calls for more hands-on, creative education models that connect students with nature, inspiring advances in the way humans evolve.
Student Change Agent
Bandile Phiri is a 16-year-old student from Calgary, Alberta. She has participated in speaking and debate tournaments for over five years, competing successfully at the regional and national level. After developing an interest in environmental studies and a rooted passion for the climate change subject, Bandile has spoken at conferences throughout the city. With a deep passion and desire to effectively make a difference, Bandile has worked to spread awareness on social media and at speaking events, encouraging others to take action. She now plans to share her idea about how today’s education system needs to be remodeled to work as humanity's defense against the dangerous consequences of climate change. As a current student of the secondary education system, Bandile offers a unique perspective on today's world from the eyes of a millennial.

Brilliant talk Bandile. Like yourself, I'm also from Swaziland but currently in South Africa doing my masters degree with a focus on human-nature connectedness. Awesome stuff!! 💕💕
Wow! When I see young people like Bandile, her ideas, interests and confidence, I know that humanity can survive the challenges ahead. The scientific information is depressing. Thanks to people like Bandile we have reason to be optimistic. Thank You Bandile!
great talk Bandile. the exile of empathy in learning is the root cause of education discourse.

Amen you ladies have magical smiles and gleaming eyes and much much more
What she is describing already exists: Waldorf or Rudolf Steiner schools are based on learning with nature, following natural rhythms and following the seasons... with no formal teaching until the age of 6 and lots of time spent outdoors.

Of course these type of schools exist, but in order to spark "human evolution" the majority of the world has to adopt these systems.

Yes of course, I really think she did a great job and not everyone is aware such schools exist, so it is awesome that a young woman will talk about the need for the education system to change :)
Love this!!! Making such great connections -- so beautifully laid out -- and clearly explained!!! I so LOVE this emphasis on the humanity!!! of learning!!!
One of the most innovative pieces I've seen so far on this platform

I dont do those things neither. It mostly has a lot to do with my upbringing. My father didn't play that in his house. You bet not say the word "nigga" or you were gonna get an ear full from him.

This girl, SHE IS GREAT.
Finally someone said something about this .. Well done
She is beautiful!!!
good ideas! being the kids to nature, show them (remind them) that we are apart of and connected to this earth. bring us back to a gentler side of our humanity, more conscious of our environment and each other.... end the separation. just make the kids hippies!! ;) what an intelligent, thoughtful young woman. if only all educational institutions could have the opportunity (funding) to create a space for children like she described. the world would totally rock.
She has the passion and intelligence to move mountains....so to speak. Being slightly naive is a given for youth, but it is refreshing that this youth is far-less idealistic and far-more objective. Her and the near-future generations will be faced with challenges of, and the need to cope with, the Baby Boomer regime and their banquet of consequences for all their poisonous cookery and quackery. You'll need more than luck....but good luck to you anyways.
soooo cool. I'd love to meet her, she seems so gentle and intelligent
