No mention of the surprisingly dark and mature ending? And I don't mean "Rated M"-mature. I mean the kind that actually makes you think. One that's actually tragically realistic, in an ocean of cartoony nonsense. That last speech from Conker before the credits roll is more memorable to me than any of the crazy characters or dirty humor.

The thing I hate most about Conker is that another game like it simply wouldn't work now. The leash has been removed, and anyone can make anything, spreading it to a mass market in a matter of minutes. Conker worked within the existing, overly-strict framework of a console for kids, and blew everyone away with the kinds of jokes and references they got away with. Conker is a big middle finger to these overly-controlling, censorious companies, while sticking within the assigned boundaries, if only just. The gameplay hasn't aged well, and some of the segments are down right painful, but as a piece of history, it's invaluable, irreplaceable, and fuck me is it funny. Great video, lad.

@NinjaStyle Agreed. Just ignore the cancel culture weirdos and make a product that's true to your vision, no matter how degenerate or controversial it may be. There's a market for the type of content in games like Conker's Bad Fur Day and their always will be, so whoever takes issue with it can just simply not buy it and move on with their lives.

I think Rare did an amazing job with Conker's Bad Fur Day's quality and gameplay. Although, at the time not only did it lack successful commercials and sold poorly, but its sheer and innovative gameplay was overlooked. Nearly anybody who's played Conker very likely have gotten distracted by its humor and movie spoofs than the actual splendid experience and well crafted, unique level-design. I think Rare's trick of combining all their gameplay styles from their previous N64 games was absolutely genius and a great way of wrapping up their final work on the system. The platforming and collecting style in the levels based off from both Banjo games and Donkey Kong 64, the lava hoverboard level in the "Uga Buga" chapter's racing and control challenging style based off from Diddy Kong Racing, the "Spooky" chapter and Multiplayer's exploration, C button movement control, third-person shooter action style based off from Jet Force Gemini, and finally, the "It's War" and Multiplayer's first-person shooter action style based off from Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark. Conker's Bad Fur Day isn't just amazing because of its humor and movie spoofs, it's amazing because of its creativity, cast of characters, innovative style, and significant features. Conker's Bad Fur Day in my opinion is truly a unique and clever masterpiece. I would even go as far to say one of the best of games.

I enjoyed this vid. I always thought this game was interesting and it's interesting to hear it analyzed. I just wish this vid was longer.

Also, this was a very well made video. Good job, PostMesmeric. You're right. Because of its twists and turns of game design Conker's Bad Fur Day shouldn't work but does.

oops,my bad lol i do appreciate that he at least swears far less than any other character in the game as a subtle nod to his earlier appearances. i like that the game does kinda hint at the fact that all those old games really did happen long ago in conker's childhood and bfd takes place during his adulthood

He also says bitch at one point but yeah, the developers made sure that most of the swearing came from the other characters, not Conker. He keeps himself in check most of the time. When he does swear then it's deserved.

Can't comment much on Conker's Bad Fur Day since it's a game I never got around to playing, but I do like how you approached analyzing it in this video. (Just thought I'd re-post this since it was on the original upload.)

00s humor: South Park, American Pie, Scary Movie, Blink-182 music videos (like First Date). Humor in mass media back then was all about disrespecting what was morally traditional. Lacking the more critical spirit of today's humor, it was just a way of saying "this exists"

Of course now, to actually have any criticizisms of modern "culture" is considered hate speach and a leftist dominated media space makes humour difficult. You can't just tell a joke without people reading too much into it, or getting overly fake offended by it, or if you are those leftists you just repeat rhetoric and forget to tell a joke.

Hey, another new blood of the incoming surge. Just curious, if a game similar to Conker - played in a sampler style of humors or otherwise multiple variations on a theme - do you think it'd be received particularly well? The one large issue I have with Conker is its lack of polish in the gameplay department. To say it's "aged" would feel a bit inaccurate, as Rare's previous projects in Banjo, Jet Force, Perfect Dark, DK64, etc. were already leagues ahead of it when it came to tight control (and it hurts to put DK64 above Conker there, believe you me). Does depth in gameplay have to be sacrificed for variety in tone? Otherwise, thank you for analyzing this game as more than "this is an underappreciated gem that I played in high school and everyone should enjoy it maybe the best N64 game I dunno???". It's really refreshing to hear.

I'm happy you liked the video, and yeah, I wanted to give this game a more critical view since I feeling it was lacking there. As for your question, that's a tough nut to crack. It really depends on the game and the creator's vision, but I think a game can sacrifice depth if the shallow ends of its gameplay are sound and interesting on their own. But like I said, this is very dependent on the game itself.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is just a one of a kind game. I don't think a game like it would be able to thrive today. Now Rare is a mess.Young Conker ruined Rare. Conker himself is just not like he used to be. The sequel to Conker's Bad Fur Day isn't even canon, which is why I like to go with the original ending of Conker's Bad Fur Day that didn't make the final cut where he commits suicide.

This is one of the best games of all time!!!!

People might hate me for this but I think I love the Deadpool game for the same reason as conker. Not as quite up to par with conker but it's effort definitely showes

I still personally think conkers bad fur day is the best game in the world to date. I got this game when I was 6. Throughout my entire life there were and still are days I'd pack away my current consoles (PS2, PS3 and PS4) just to set up my N64 to play conkers bad fur day, and would keep it set up for weeks at a time

I'd say it's a bit of a hidden gem, sure didn't break box office, but that doesn't necessarily reflect charm and character of a product. And something conker has is charm and personality, a trait which I find very enjoyable.

Huh, I just watched this last night, and now it's back up again. Meh, still love this video regardless, and this game is great.

Since I just replayed this game a few days ago, I'll say one thing about as far as the humour in the game goes, it kinda stops half way through and just becomes movie rip offs. Don't get me wrong those were alright and got a few laughs, but it didn't feel like the first half that was so cartoony, It feels like the last half was rushed a bit, movie rip offs are fine enough but are kinda stale on their own. The first half of the game was just so much more creative, and even with the rip offs they could have made things a bit more fleshed out, for example: Conker get's dragged off to war, but the whole area of the game is just Conker doing what ever the General guy told him for no reason, a missed chance for Conker to be suckered into service with sign up bonuses like real life millitary recruitment does, he gets offered a few thousand dollars and signs a contract without reading it only for him to later realize what he signed. It would have made the whole war themed section of the game feel more like a direct consequence of Conker's character faults, and he goes through hell for his short sightedness / greed.

What I notice is that almost every review just neglects the multiplayer. The multiplayer is by far the best part of the game! People always claim Mario kart, golden eye and smash brothers as the greatest multiplayer games ever. They obviously haven't played conkers bad fur days "Colours" "Total War" "Raptor" "Beach" "Heist" and "Deathmatch" multiplayer modes with friends. Even playing those modes solo is more fun than mario kart, 007 and smash!!

I disliked Conker's Bad Fur Day for its lack of focus. For me most of the jokes fell flat due to lack of contrast. The silly was juxtaposed to the same kind of silliness, instead silly juxtaposed to another kind of silly.
