Caveat: I've never read the books so my opinion is solely based on the show. I read Siuan's behavior as being purely political. In her role as the Amyrlin Seat she has to keep all of the power plays in check to maintain her position and they already know that there are factions at work against her. She's only going to hold that seat as long as she can maintain that support and being able to use the Dragon Reborn as a piece of that gives her a huge chip to keep the Aes Sedai united under her if she can control the narrative on how they can use him to win the Last Battle. Now that there are enough Aes Sedai who know he exists, that she had him, and lost him, it puts her in an incredibly vulnerable situation to be potentially deposed by some of the other scrabbling factions within the Aes Sedai, perhaps under Liandrin. That rift will be a huge problem if the Aes Sedai are vulnerable, especially with the threat from the Seanchan and the White Cloaks, and most importantly the Dark. It sucks, but I think it's that Moiraine is looking at this in terms of the pattern from the prophecy and how to get Rand into the right place at the right time, and Siuan is playing politics first and missing the bigger picture.

The feeling she was getting was not like being severed from the one power, which lead him into the conclusion he got and why he was able to help Moiraine

  • @timcotton1782

Lan asking Moiraine if she had been suicidal had NOTHING to do with sympathy. He already had an inkling that she hadn't been stilled, and this answer confirmed it, sent him to Logain for the next answer. But when Rand, Lan, and Moiraine were together in front of the Waygate, Lan is the last person who would have known enough to say; "You don't have the skill to untie this knot, you'll have to cut it." Cutting a weave tied off around someone is harder than unraveling it, and more dangerous.

egwene plays the part cause she knows she's not gonna win by herself. she tried the stubborn method and realise it was hopeless, so she's now playing the part while buying her time. her line "ill kill you" was obvious she may do what she's being told but she's not broken. and i like that she's actually unintentionally being trained in her powers as it teaches her humility and not take things for granted when she wields pretty strong powers once she's free. honestly i like the parallel between what the aes sedai plans on treating a male channeler vs the culture of breaking channelers by the seachans. it's like both knows the power each of their targets wield, but both wanna harness them for their use use. it's 2 sides of the same coin

In the books, unknotting weaves is super dangerous. It's a very difficult skill and if you let it slip at the wrong moment you can do a lot of damage. Lan doesn't know that, but I'm glad they didn't try to have Rand unknot it. And with how difficult it is even if you can see the weaves, I'm not mad that Siuan didn't suddenly have this ill-advised by the tower skill.

  • @sivzzz3008

    @sivzzz3008

@@christianrapper5 Yes exactly. Unraveling (corrected from "untying") an active weave is the dangerous one, since you are picking apart a weave while you also have to maintain it. If you let it slip, it could turn into any random weave, but most likely something violent. It is rarely done, since abandoned weaves dissipate after a while so there is usually no need. It is only useful when one doesn't want to leave any trace, but even then it's not worth the risk most of the time. Unknotting a tied off weave is only difficult, not dangerous.

  • @christianrapper5

@@sivzzz3008 an active shield is just harder to break out of. It isn’t the same as picking apart a weave either . A strong channeler can just break out of a shield. I was surprised at how emotional Moiraine's moment was, regaining the power (given how confident I was that it was temporary). Rosamund played it so well. Still restrained but so moved. Verin's line direct to us! lol, I laughed. I also loved how well she twisted her words to Leane. I thought she'd lied somehow for a minute. Overall, I was totally fine with the changes. I'm mostly open to changes, but some get me feeling weird at the moment. These honestly didn't. I disagree with the way you see Siuan. I absolutely don't see this as forced drama or anything remotely CW. Think about this from her perspective, not from Rand or Moiraine's. Yes, Siuan has been pulled away from her original goal, but that happens when you hold power for so long. It only makes sense that she's been somewhat institutionalized. But she's totally right about Moiraine. Moiraine did fail and she did leave Rand totally exposed. A forsaken has been hanging out with him for months. Moiraine is leaving things to chance and is now walking Rand into a massive trap, just trusting the wheel that it'll somehow work out. From a logical pov, Siuan's plan is the safer option by far, even if it's not the one we know is right as book readers. I think this was a smart scene where both sides are right and both sides are wrong. Moiraine's plan is pretty much insane if you think about it (thinking Rand is somehow ready to face Ishy after Siuan can shield him so easily (which she should be able to)). Only plot armor (ta'verenness) can save him now. Now, you did find more evidence than I saw that maybe you're onto something with Siuan being influenced. So, maybe? But I still don't think so. I think her choices make a lot of sense even if I don't like them, which is how the world often works. For Moiraine's shield: this is a pitfall of modern fandom. Siuan's knot skills coming back in would have been neat for sure, but I think there's a risk when we're always theorizing and coming up with pet theories. If we like our theories too much, it can mess with our viewing, even when those theories were never guaranteed to be true. The many reactions to Rey's parent's reveal in Last Jedi come to mind. Her parents as nobodies was the best narrative choice, but fans freaked out because they'd already made their own ideas and held them so strongly. The real answer didn't get a chance to be considered without prebuilt disappointment. There's SO much to cover in the finale. I hope it's extra long...

  • 10 ай бұрын

I love your way of thinking! Plus for theories and risk of disappointment, we should follow Moraine's advice and ask ourselves what we are sure is true before taking stuff for granted. Here we could know for sure that Moraine was only shielded, even if she believed she was stilled. But the truth is we could never take anything else for granted.

  • @johnettadw1

Non-book reader: Thank you. I thought it was just me... Under compulsion or not, it's not as if what Siuan told Moiraine about her failures were not true. Remember they have to tell the truth. And when Moiraine came back with basically you didn't do what you were supposed to do in the tower either... IMO the greater burden was always on Siuan. She had to make critical decisions (while walking that political tight rope, dealing with pettiness and power envy) with Moiraine in mind always and how it might affect her journey out in the wilderness. Whatever she needed, however she needed it. Siuan had to always justify. Moiraine just had to receive it and keep moving. And by no means am I trying to say Moiraine's contribution to the mission was less than Siuan's. Just that they are equally invested.

When my wife was reading the books for the first time a few years back several times she asked why Mat was my favorite character. After the Galad/Gawyn fight she began to understand. Also, I've always enjoyed the character of Moirane but I've never "liked" her so this feels true to the books for me.

The setup is that Moiraine has been traveling wild for twenty years looking for the dragon. She was free to make all her own decisions. Meanwhile Siuan has been caged in the White Tower for those years having to play political games to gain the AS in order to support Moiraine’s search. Siuan has the burden of her office, of responsibility, and of bureaucracy. Once she’s informed by Lan that Moiraine has been stilled for six critical months and that Moiraine has kept it a secret from her she feels compelled to take over the responsibility for Rand’s “guidance”. Not under compulsion from the Dark Side but compelled by her office as head of the WT. I think that the show does a good job setting up these motivations.

Compulsion would also explain why Siuan asked Moiraine to swear a 4th oath in the show. I remember we were all speculating about it. But compulsion is also a difficult solution bc then why not compulse everyone who matters all around, like Rand, rulers and nobles, heads of all factions, all the ta'veren, the whole Tower etc. Compulsion without the rods is a very tricky way to use in the show.

I like your theory about Siuan being manipulated to do things. I think that dream Siuan received in s1 is a part of this. Its also a nod to the books, when Ishamael told Rand in the Eye of the World that he pulled the strings and the Amyrlin Seat danced, thinking she was controlling events.

My partner, a non-reader, absolutely loved the ending. He loved how they set up the oath in season 1. He loved that Moi and Su butted heads at the end, and how it obviously was killing both of them to be divided. He caught the non-lie from Verin and got excited. And he burst into tears, like uncontrolled sobs, when Moiraine was unshielded. I think having events go this way will be even worse for Siuan. She not only lost the dragon but got her butt kicked and half a city destroyed. The Black Ajah will act soon and undermine her more, setting up for her downfall next season.

I'm asking myself if it Liandrin or Lanfear who want Moraine dead and not the Master. Ishy make clear with Lanfear that a desperate Aes Sedai open more possibilities than an Aes Sedai dead. I am pretty sure it is Lanfear who wants Moiraine dead (I mean, she says as much to Rand, and even to Liandrin if I am not misremembering) while Ishy pretty openly said to Lanfear that he considered Moiraine more useful alive than dead. So It is most likely just Liandrin not giving the full truth to Barthanes. A Forsaken/Chosen wants Moiraine dead, he doesn't need to know that it is Lanfear and not Ishamael who gave the order. So Liandrin doesn't tell.

I think with Siuan the changes are just the show needing to be efficient and compress whole chapters and books. In a single scene we setup for Rand knowing that the AS want to cage him, laying out very quickly the AS position on the Dragon Reborn. This sets up books worth of mistrust. We also hear clearly about factions trying to take down Siuan again setting up whole plotlines. I found it to be quite clever storytelling.

I need to watch it again, you reviewing it makes me think it was better than my initial impressions. I think I have spotted portal stones (not waygates) in several scenes so I still think we may see them used at some point. Flicker flicker is so iconic. Maybe Rand uses them first transporting everyone away from Falme. I thing I LOVED. Lanfear's clothes going from black to grey. Such an awesome nod to her playing both sides. Book Lanfear is arguably not evil, will we see that continue and we get to see Lanfear in white like she should be. Also, Lanfear might be the best character in the show. She just dominates the scene whenever she is in one like in this episode. It's amazing. I get vibes with her like Peter Falk and Columbo that she is almost transcendentally perfect for a role. On COMPULSION. You could be right but I don't think she is under compulsion. I just look at the opening scene between Siuan and Moiraine and how they both wanted to escape the tower, but then are trapped by Gitarra's vision. Moiraine DOES escape but the price is basically every scrap of joy and happiness she has. Siuan is trapped by the Tower, and in the end is shown to basically be a slave to the thing she hates, slightly paralleling Egwene in a way. In another perfect casting Elayne is just perfect in every scene. The part with Loial was note perfect. I also loved the bit with Anvaere. That was super well done and I agree with her being merged going forward. I was VERY surprised Lanfear went into the Waygate. I think she Travels with Rand out of it, since Travelling has been foreshadowed a few times. People getting knocked out against walls is way overused and becoming almost meme-ish. Nice review

Again, I agree that something is off about Siuan. Her mannerisms and temperament are way off. I kept thinking "Come on Moiraine you know something is off about her". At one point, I thought Moiraine had glimpsed something when she sort of looked in Siuan's eyes and twisted her head from side to side a bit at the beginning after being summoned as the Amyrlin walks up close to her. It was as if Moiraine was trying to detect if something was wrong. The show has previously made a point of Moiraine being able to read Siuan's body language in the first season and also during the S2 E7 cold open. I like your thoughts about Siuan's realization look at the end and on compulsion.

Some of the characters are starting to feel more like themselves as they're given more time to breathe. First things first. Lauren I continue to love your content. You can see both sides of why people like and dislike the show. Even though you are more optimistic about things than I am, you have helped me think of the show in a different way when comparing it to the books. Thank you. Now one story line that I have disliked all season has been Moiraine, Lan, and the Truple. It was nice to see it end. The weave cutting thing was whatever. Wish Lan would have just asked Rand to cut it and nothing else. One of my favorite things from the books was the letter to someone, that I really have wanted back in the show, from Moiraine. That thread that led to a certain tower and was one of my favorite things to read. I'm hopeful now that Siuan and Moiraine having this fall out might lead to that story being shown on screen. The Mat scenes, I liked how they were shot. Finn is doing a good job of making me at least feel like it is Mat. Theory though, what if Rand drinks the same tea and sees his past lives and that's how he learns some weaves, swordplay, and maybe we get Lews in his head. Something has to happen because Rand is not ready by any means to face the next two battles. The show can't continue to roll Mat's luck into Rand's character. Again, Love the content keep up the great work. Ready for the Finale and you breakdowns for the whole season.

After 2nd watch, I think the Mat tea visions were related to if he retakes possession of the dagger. They were showing us dagger Mat. He becoming his mother represents his fear of powerlessness against the aggression of the evil of the dagger. Setup for ep8 Regarding the two possible instances of compulsion, I don't think that is Liandrin's doing or she would have used it on Leanne when trying to find out where Siuan was. I think the spider may have been hiding in the white tower. Can't wait to see her appear.

Thanks again Lauren. Loved the main story line with Rand, Moiraine, Lan, Logain, Verin et al that led to Moiraine being able to channel again. Always thought she was shielded, and given only a man can see the weaves, it had to be Rand who saved her - As good as Siuan might be at undoing knots, it helps if you can see them. MoiraIne now has Toh to Rand - or at least some trust. Siuan looked/sounded off, but I hadn't put any thought into it beyond them setting up for her to be overthrown in early S3 and bring on Elaida. Siuan now knows know she at least has Moiraine and Verin against her regarding Rand, if not Alana. I too had to watch twice in a row. I just did not get the Mat tea scene at all first time around. I was sort of expecting to see where Mat got some of his military tactical skills from in a past life, but it was really an Ishy recruitment video showing what a crap life Mat has had over and over, and what a bad person he is, so wouldn't it be great to stop it by breaking the wheel. Lanfear getting Mat to Falme via travelling was way too convenient - although it does leave the Min storyline up in the air. Mat was a Neville Nobody in book 2 so I can live with his limited screentime, but this needs to be addressed in S3.

Great video, love your content! As others have said, Lan's smile when he found out Moiraine was not suicidal was because that confirmed his suspicion she was not stilled. And it had to be Rand to overcome it, despite his inexperience, because it was a weave of saidin that had been tied off, not saidar. No-one else there could have done it. Saying Rand could not untie it was just setting up the danger of doing it the other way, the dangerous way, cutting it.

Daes Dae Maer is originally an Aes Sedai thing, the way Verryn tricked Liana was a clear case of Daes Dae Maer - listen to what she told her, Siuan send me, and this is an order - these are two separate sentences but no lie wass said.

I disagree with you on the Siuan stuff because I think they'll bring it back together in the future as they have with other similar events that at first had felt like diverging fundamentally from the book: Moraine turning out to not have been stilled for example. But I love that your review feels so fresh and honest, in this era of content creators selling their opinions to the highest bidder your honest takes are very refreshing. I definitely think that the show continues to set up the Tower coup. The theory that Suian is compulsed is an interesting one that I hadn’t considered, but it would explain a lot about her behavior. I wonder how the relationship with Moiraine is going to be changed. Has Siuan irreparably harmed it? And does that leave both of them open for relationships from the books? That would seem really weird at this point, but this storyline is so changed it’s kind of hard to guess. Also, it probably depends on whether Moiraine’s part in the show more closely comes in line with the books or if they are going to change her arc past Book 5. The other thought I had besides compulsion is Lanfear or Ishamael using her dreams. We saw that Ishamael probably did that in Season 1, so why not in Season 2 as well?

I was really happy with how they handled Moiraine's shield. It only made sense that she felt stilled because she can't tell that it was Saidin that was shielding her from the source. She needed a male channeler to break the shield so it made perfect sense that Rand would do it. However I thought it was going to be Logain who would teach Rand how to untie the shield, like an actual full five to eight minute scene where Rand is learning to control the power with Logain's guidance and then channeling that controlled weave into releasing Moiraine from her shield. The "wolves" barking was pretty cringe, that was an easy sound edit if the wolf dogs they use in place of real wolves were barking during scenes, wolves growl and howl, they don't bark.

I wish we could have gotten Lan going to Caihrien and spending some time training Rand. There could’ve been some great dialogue between Lan and Rand, and they could have made the final realization with Logain more impactful and believable, and it would make Rands growth into a fighter important and believable. If Lan and Moiraine had to split up, I think they could have had Moiraine send Lan away back to the tower when she left to go kill Lanfear. It would’ve given Lan much better plot development, and it feels to me like everything else would have fit.

When Lan asked Moiraine if she felt like ending her life, the way he asked her, I just KNEW it was because he had an alternate theory as to what was happening to her. I think he asked that question to get circumstantial evidence that supported a theory he was building. That was then solidified when he talked to Logain. He is a good investigator, and I really think that tracks well with his character. He notices things that others don't.

It could also be that Lanfear threatened Siuan that she would kill Moraine if Siuan didn't shield and hold Rand. When Rand told Lanfear in the dream world that he was held by Siuan in the Sun Palace, Lanfear said "I know". Lanfear could have threatened Siuan right after she got into Ciarien, because it seems that she and Lan were aligned before that, but all of a sudden Siuan changed her position --- Lan even said "This was not the plan" to Siuan after she shielded Rand. I hope this is the case, as this would make the whole story way more interesting and the episode more exciting.

That is Elaidas arch though. Siuna lets him go loose. Think about it for a second. Rand is afraid of every aesedai, and when he comes face to face with the amarylln she lets him go. Elaida come later and her minions place him in a box. How can you be ok with this iteration? The distrust that Rand has with the aesedai is because of their ruthless gentling of men, amd they are really efficiemt amd effective at it. This is where his distrust of them begins, he is always wary of them, and when he gets caught he down right wants nothing to do with them. They could have done better and should have done better.

@@R3ligion_On_Trial Rand was afraid of aes sedai before Elaida, this event, siuan capturing him, does nothing but fuel this essential arc in Rands story. It also makes a lot of sense, considering Siuan is Amyrlin seat at a time when she knows two things, the last battle is comgng and she is in danger of losing power if she let's go of Rand, and people figure out she is letting the dragon loose. So it not only fuels Rands paranoia, it also adds to Siuans coming fall. Seems pretty well done to me.

I'm also so confused why the title of this episode is Daes Dae'mar. Maybe because I was expecting the Cairhienin style Daes Dae'mar. But come to think of it, most of the storylines are about scheming, especially between the Aes Sedai. Lan and Siuan scheming behind Moiraine's back, then it turns out that Siuan has schemes of her own. Verin playing Leane. I also like the order Liandrin gives to Barthanes, to remove Moiraine on the board. We know who was the threat to Moiraine, and it was shown in the last episode that Lanfear seems to be recruiting Liandrin. I think the order to kill Moiraine didn't come from the Dark One or from Ishamael, but from Lanfear. Its a subtle hint that the Forsaken would work against one another if there's a conflict of interest.

Book Spolier! Also, thanks for these videos! I can see how much care you put into them, and it shows. ' ' ' ' ' ' ' Spoiler speculation - I wonder if they're trying to use compulsion through Liandrin to turn Suian into a puppet Amyrlin, therefore setting up Elaida without needing an Elaida (we haven't seen her yet, but in the books she's very much getting ready for Suian. I also think want to point out that in the books, Mesaana sets up shop in the white tower. In the show, Lanfear told Liandrin that she wasn't bound to just one master - since Mesaana is introduced so late in the books, could SHE be behind the compulsion o if used on Suian? Furthermore, I wonder if the tea is supposed to replace the first Ter'angreal that Mat discovers in the books, setting up his experience in Rhuidean? Lastly, point of order - the fight between Ishy and Rand in the sky above Falme - the projection of it wasn't any Aes Sedai's doing, it happened (possibly) because of the HoV. There's a lot to kind of speculate about.

A few comments regarding your criticisms-hopefully I'll say something or offer a fresh perspective that will increase your enjoyment of the episode (not that you disliked it, but more enjoyment is always better, I say!): ● *Re: Untying Moiraine's Shield* - How would Siuan have been able to untie the shield on Moiraine? The shield was woven of _sai'din_ and, as far as I know, the trick that lets _sai'dar_ dispel a _sai'din_ weave (and vice versa) is something that was lost after the Breaking (indeed one of my favourite little fist-pump moments from the books is-BOOK SPOILER AHEAD WEAR A HELMET-the moment when Rand shatters the Mirror of Mists the Aes Sedai try to intimidate him with, surprising the hell out of them). I'd long figured that there were precisely three people in the story who could have freed Moiraine: Ishamael, Lanfear, and Rand, and pretty quickly narrowed it down to "oh, Rand will free Moiraine" from there :) ● *Re: Siuan's Nastiness* - My interpretation of those moments was of a woman faced with a conflict between duty and her love for Moiraine, and overcorrecting: She knows what is at stake, and she sees herself as the Amyrlin who will preside over the possible end of the world, over the disaster for which the White Tower has been preparing for millennia. She has thousands of years of past Amyrlins and Tower law weighing on her, pressuring her to be the Amyrlin the world needs. So I understand completely how Siuan would brook no weakness in herself, no concessions to her own feelings, even treating Moiraine _more_ harshly than is warranted because of it. I honestly didn't see it as contrived at all: I saw it as an important character moment for Siuan's arc, her choosing duty so absolutely, and you could see the pain on her face as she made her choice (just as you saw the same on Moiraine's face when she made hers). Later in the video you encourage us to remember what Moiraine was going through during some of her less likeable moments; I think the exact same thing should be said of Siuan and her actions this episode. I definitely _don't_ think Siuan is under Compulsion-I think her actions are entirely in keeping with her character and the impossible weight of responsibility she is shouldering. Besides, Compulsion on the scale you're speculating about-i.e. long-term, precise control of someone's words and actions without turning them into a zombie-is something even Graendal would struggle with. I don't see Liandrin having anywhere near that degree of skill (nor Lanfear, nor Ishamael, now that I think about it). ● *Re: Abruptness of Mat's Trip to Falme* - I don't necessarily disagree with your criticism of it feeling abrupt, more that I think the show _wanted_ it to feel abrupt. We got that sense when Mat stepped out onto the balcony and beheld the coastal waters with utter disbelief: We were made to feel the same jarring sense of dislocation that he was experiencing, which I thought was great! Even the way it undercut Ishamael's setting things up with Min had layers, further showing how the Forsaken are far from a united front and regularly fuck with each other's plans. Much like in the books, the greatest weakness of the Forsaken is often each other. ● *Re: Moiraine as Darkfriend?* - This idea of yours came totally out of left field to me! I suppose I can see how the show might be trying to sow a bit of suspicion among non book readers (much like they did with the Dragon Reborn's identity in season one), but the evidence just isn't there. Because Moiraine _sincerely thought_ she was stilled up until the moment Lan told her about the weave-she didn't even know it was _possible_ for a shield to be tied off. An Aes Sedai can say things that are untrue if they believe them to be true, and that's clearly (to me at least) what's going on with Moiraine claiming she had been stilled. Moreover, we clearly saw that the Oath Rod continues to bind her when literal flows of the Power compelled her to obey Siuan's order to close the Waygate. ● *Re: The Battle in the Sky* - Ever since the show was first announced, I've been wondering how they were going to pull off this scene in a way that wasn't cheesy. I mean, they can't have Rand and Ishamael projected into the sky like holograms with camera angle changes and everything, that would be absurd. But they keep having characters call attention to that visual by quoting the lines of the prophecy, and I don't think the writers would have emphasized that part so much if they were going to significantly change it or reduce its epic effect on the world/witnesses. Maybe they'll fight inside some huge thunderhead and the people on the ground will catch only glimpses? I've been trying to imagine how this scene will go for _years_ and I am very excited to finally learn what it's going to look like! ● *Re: Flicker-Flicker* - What's with your obsession with the flicker-flicker stuff? 😉 I always thought it felt weird and out of place in the books, and I am not at all disappointed that they've so far skipped it in the show. Between The Ways and Tel'aran'rhiod, I think introducing a whole 'nother alternate dimension with fairly little relevance to the plot would be a bit much. Perhaps we'll get a small nod to it, but I very much doubt we'll be seeing extended scenes in an alternate Westlands. ● *Re: Lanfear* - How the hell did you not make a single mention of all the badass Lanfear action we got? Her callously nuking the Foregate was just \*chef's kiss\*; her whole "goth villainess" look is absolutely doing it for me; and her devious emotional manipulation of everyone she interacts with is perfection. (When the Aes Sedai gathered on the balcony/bridge to bring the rain, I initially thought they were going to have a faceoff with Lanfear on the street below-in hindsight, I think it's a good idea they didn't; if the Aes Sedai had won, that would cheapen the mystique of the Forsaken, and if Lanfear had won against that many linked Sisters, that would have overinflated the power level of the Forsaken.) Woo, that was long! I absolutey love your videos, thank you so much once again for posting your thoughts and analysis!

The throne chamber scene looked amazing, the lighting, camera angles all of it! Also how Rand was just down trodden when he was shielded was a great touch. Just looking at the last few episodes it seems the show is starting to find it's way out the the "CW" space as you put it and more in line with the level of production and "realism" of shows like HoTD, TLoU, or pretty much any of TWD shows (though even they have their cringe moments every once in a few episodes).
