Confirmation Bias in 5 Minutes

Confirmation Bias is part of human nature. We all are susceptible to it. But why is it such a universal human condition? And what can we do to move beyond it?

Actually he just defended scientific fundamentals. Scientific research has many controls to avoid confirmation bias. Effects on CO2 on radiation is approved and denying it would be like denying basic algebra. And I wouldn't like to have leaders who denies alegebra. I would consider them blinded, stupid and false. Like he does. Greetings from overseas.

This is why I hate writing research papers about controversial topics in science. Both sides of the argument conduct extremely biased experiments, and then proceed to point out the biases of the others' experiments. It's hypocrisy at its worst, and most of them don't even realize it.

You just displayed your bias by not being honest about what percentage has the most bias. There are research numbers that show biases coming from a specific side. And it’s often those in academia now that try to bolster their positions, try to justify their existence, tries to justify their bias.

What would have been better is if after exposing the woman as an oil lobbyist, he had shown an example of a liberal making the same mistake. It's not like there's a shortage of it. Using the example of "ask a liberal why climate change is real, they'd say it just feels right or everybody knows etc" is a very lazy way to say "I'm showing both sides." I'm a liberal and I'm really disappointed with how this video puts "destroy the right wing" before "recognize bad logic." If you want to destroy right wing charlatans, show people how to not be marks. Make that the focus! "Everyone is obliged to become hysterical at the mere thought of drug use, just as workers in Orwell's 1984 were obligated to scream curses, like Pavlov's frothing dogs, when the enemy appeared on screen. And they'd better scream loud and ugly." - William S. Burroughs (that's not to say I'm ok with Trump, just that hysteria doesn't help anyone but the blanket industry)

It may be beneficial to do a video on cognitive distortions, as in the process of describing confirmation bias, you display several good examples. One such example is at 3:52 in the video (labeling). Disagreeing with someone’s view is healthy and normal, but then labeling someone as a “bad person” based on a single viewpoint is an example of cognitive distortion.

I try hard to work on this...but like you said, it's hard. Someone got into an argument with me about why Veganism is the only sure way diet that works. I told them that I believe being Vegan has a ton of healthy benefits, but I wouldn't necessarily call it the "be all end all" to diets. I wasn't for or against being vegan, I was just trying to say that everyone's body is different. I failed to realize that I was letting my belief of "not everything is black and white" get I'm the way of her beliefs and I was trying to convince her, even tho I shouldn't have tried to persuade her. I should have let her belief what she wanted to belief. I'm decent at looking at certain things from both sides.....but I fail hard when it comes to trying to convince others to think the same way, when instead I should just let those people believe what they want and be 1 sided, and just because I think they should look at things from both sides, doesn't mean that I should get upset or try convincing them when they don't. So for that, I'm wrong. That's something I have to work on heavily is to just let people believe what they want to believe. I also use the phrase: you shouldn't argue your side until you can argue the opposing side better than they can. But I generally use that phrase with people I don't fully agree with.... Which makes me Bias as well lol.

excellent video, one small note i would like to add however: I feel like the real experts have actually less trouble than other people to admit the "elephant" has a lot of control, particularly scientists. I am in the science "environment" as well, and while i would not call myself an expert yet (still graduating), Let me tell you, science (done properly) CONSTANTLY makes you notice the elephants, as a method for understanding the world around us the scientific method is for that very reason, when you get down to it, mostly a set of rules and practices to not letting the elephant meddle in the process. When those rules are broken and the elephant meddles, it's bad science. Of course there are such things as bad and wrong scientists too, i just feel, from my personal experience, that as a whole the scientific community is the most aware of humanity's many biases, on account of having to constantly work around them.

@@rkim2214 I don't see the point in lockdowns. Natural immunity is always the best way to go as humans get stronger over time as their body adapts to varying factors in everyday life. The way Covid 19 deaths are calculated is in a poor manner, 28 days from a positive test instantly means Covid 19 death? Very lazy and not a thorough reasoning behind every death. Segregating society because they don't want to get vaccinated is discrimination. Coercion to take a vaccine experiment is against the Nuremberg Code. Covid 19 is a psychological battle against government and media but using the scapegoat to make people believe there's a deadly virus out there. I don't care if people want to or don't want to take the vaccine, their choice but don't start taking people's freedoms away.

A bias is not necessarily thinking in a way that leads one to be wrong. One can have a bias about something and still can be right. A better way to put a bias is that it let you think in a way that leads to believe things that are not rationally justified

It may not be that they are triggered rather its that the videos narrator and or creator decided to take a political stance. Not to mention resorting to calling someone a bitch three or four times and useing the presidents image in a way that made him look like an arrogant bufoon! Had it stayed away from a political viewpoint maybe people wouldn't see it as being a biased video about confirmation bias?

he started the video off explaining the definition of confirmation bias, then he started simping and emasculating men. As the video goes on it only gets worse, as he pushes his political agenda using pictures of trump whenever he says something "negative" which is why most of the comments are "comfirmation bias during a confirmation bias video"

This Biased video explained & illustrated what confirmation bias is. Facts don't explain themselves they simply exist as a fact. Facts require a person ( who will always be biased ) to interpret the facts. Humans need an interpretation to make sense of the facts. As stated in the video "even evidence that support a biased belief can be true". But when is it not confirmation bias?: (A) When one only looks at the evidence discrediting one's beliefs? (B) When one looks at both the confirming evidence & the refuting evidence? Either way, a judgement/verdict has to follow to either confirm or debunk the claim by the believer. So Confirmation Bias only looks at the evidence that support the claim/belief while ignoring the evidence that refutes it. However, even the evidence that refutes the claim can be fallacious because it had to be interpreted before it came to the claimants attention. Was the evidence on both sides properly interpreted? If both opposing evidence were properly interpreted, does one or both have sufficient weight to affirm or discredit the claim?🤔
