Confessions of a Sugar Addict in a Sugar-Laden World | Laura Marquis | TEDxLoyolaMarymountU

For the first time, in her incredibly vulnerable talk, Laura tells her sobering story of becoming a sugar addict and what it took to reverse that trend and help others do the same.
For nearly a decade, Laura Marquis was inexplicably sick. Motivated to find answers, Laura embarked on a journey of self-discovery, finding that the food we eat directly impacts our health and wellness. Armed with a degree in Applied Body Science, a passion for health, and a thirst for answers, Laura became a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, and later opened her own fitness studio in 2009. Today, she is drawn to the kitchen by a passion to educate herself and others on the sugar epidemic, launching the very first refined-sugar-free dessert cookbook.

Laura's TEDx talk will expose her personal journey as a sugar addict, reveal why the average healthy American, regardless of their measurements, really isn't healthy; and examine why, despite modern medicine, obesity and disease still prevail at a rapid rate.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

But what comes first, the chicken or the egg? So many problems are actually created by sugar. Mental and emotional "illnesses" are a direct consequence of sugar and processed foods. And most people dont know that. They dont connect their depression or anxiety or chaotic thinking and wild mood swings to the food they put in their bodies.

It took me 45 days to feel good when I eliminated sugar. But life is not easy and people laugh if you say you are addicted to sugar. One day I started eating again, in a "social pressure" and all came back.

That social pressure... Because of it I started eating it and I keep eating 2 weeks but then I feel worse and I understand even better that it is pure poison. That's why I started to sugar free diet at least for 21 days to reset everything. For 21 days no white flour, rice, regular pasta and of course refined sugar and processed foods that contains glucose-fructose syrup and HFCS. I think 21 days are great to make it a habit again. I eat whole wheat bread, organic eggs, goat cheese, yoghurt( as a Turkish it's my biggest obsession 😂), fruit (2-3 servings a day) nut, legumes, vegetables, fish, meat and chicken. There is a lot delicious things to eat and if I want a cookie or cake I just bake with healthy ingredients. Sweetened with banana, date or molasses that my moms make. And really we do not need sugar. 💕 Be strong and start again you can do it!!!

A documentary done on sugar and what it does to you. If I had been standing, my knees would have given out! Its clever and funny in its delivery of the devastating impact of sugar on the body. If I could give it 10 stars I would! The name of the movie is That Sugar Film. If I can help anyone else to see what they are really doing to us, it would be paying it forward in a big way!

The hardest bit about being a sugar addict is the self denial because sugar is such a widely consumed and accessible item. Unlike other drugs it can be found literally everywhere and only costs pennies. It makes you feel sluggish, disrupts your appetite and can also make you feel generally ill.

It really isn't a joke... Sugar is VERY addictive. I watched a documentary and it was a wake up call. Then I started checking labels of containers and labels... EVERYTHING had sugar. My favorite cereal that I added sugar to, had sugar already? The so called healthy granola bars, protein bars, protein powder, regular milk, some meat and cheese kinds, mayo, KETCHUP (I was wtf here) and it got me so surprised. I realized EVERYTHING I was eating had sugar. Suddenly I also realized that sugar triggers my cravings even more so after my cereal with milk and sugar (with both having TONS of sugar even without me adding it) I would want to have snacks so i would eat icecream out of the box and would never be satisfied with one serving size. I could it a whole box of Ben&Jerrys in one go... And the rest of my day would be accompanied by occasional sweet treats and meals that still contained TONS of sugar. My diet was pretty much just sugar. After the documentary I switched my cereal to whole grain oats with no added sugars, started checking thoroughly for milk with no sugar, ate fruits instead of ice cream, and pretty much said GOODBYE to ketchup, mayo, many dairy products, crisps and so on. I still have my sweet treats but more mindfully than before and I eat veggies for all my meals. But I still sometimes feel it on the days when I eat no sweets, sugar withdrawal.. It's really horrible and worse than coffee withdrawal.. I have no energy, I'm down the entire day... But when I don't consume it for longer, I'm thriving.

Its also because of emotions. We reach for sugar because of the way we feel. When we feel sad and depressed we want to reach for comfort and we find it in sugar . Stress is a very big factor in everything. It feels like sugar is taking the pain away but its not. Its causing more pain which we dont see immediately.

I've been thin my whole life and so thought it was okay to eat this way...UNTIL I started having issues - gut health, skin and eventually autoimmune condition like psoriasis. Once I started researching, I discovered the truth of what sugar does to your health, I couldn't ignore it anymore. No matter your weight or size you can get diabetes. It is not a weight problem it's a health problem that can affect anyone.

Now I'm counting calories and watching my sugar intake. But when I go shopping and I walk past the sweets, before I know what's happening the chocolate or the cake is in my basket and I'm waiting at the checkout. I tell myself I'll only have a little bit, but every time it's the same story, I end up eating all of it before I even get home.

Sugar gives the illusion of comfort so people eat it thinking they are escaping stress but it’s sugar that causes it. This is the vicious circle of emotional eating, the illusion of the solution is actually the problem. In other words, the second you finish eating something sugary it’s a count down to the next sugar “fix”. Then you feel relieved (illusion) then it’s a count down......... Realize deeply there’s no comfort in sugar then quitting doesn’t require willpower which comes and goes. Education and understanding is the key to quitting. You see, it’s a illusion your quitting sugar. That’s not what’s happening. When you stop sugar you gain, you become whole, you become complete. There’s nothing to quit. There’s no void, when you stop eating sugar it’s 100% upside. Good luck! Love you all!

It's hard because I live in a Mexican household and my family doesn't exaclty make the healthiest stuff. I mainly stuck to meats, wheat bread and even wheat tortillas (yes they're horrible) and rice. I've been fighting this for years, decades. Stopped cold turkey, or just ate less, or switched to more "healthy" sugars like honey. Now, day two cold turkey again. I think it's the only way. Withdrawals feel like the flu. I'm not giving up this time because I've made a bunch of changes like a journal for the process, and a rubber band to gently snap myself out of addictive thoughts. I don't snap it hard, just enough to wake up out of cravings. I just say to myself "snap out of it" because our brain takes time to readjust.

I got rid of my sugar addiction by eating a whole food plant based diet. We are genetically programmed to eat natural sugars, like fruit. People try to repress that need and end up binging on desserts. This is what I did for years, trying to eat paleo or low carb. I never thought I’d break the addiction but I did, by feeding my body the nutrients it needed!!

I do agree that a very diverse diet helps a lot, I also eat a lot of greens, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds everyday. Meat eating is way older than refined sugar, by a few hundred million years to be exact.

The next time, I knew I couldnt trust myself, so I poured soap over the dough before I threw it away to make it impossible to get it back. Just a comment about food is the only addiction where you cant avoid your addictive substance. I read somewhere that yes you can. because you are not addicted to all food, just the food with lots of sugar or even worse/better lots of sugar and lots of fat in combination. so avoid those foods, and youre good. But if you are not addicted, then have those foods in moderation. you find out that you are addicted if you cant do moderation

I am a food/sugar addict. It's important to note that many addicts cannot eat anything that tastes like a dessert, e.g, many diet plans have recipes for mock desserts. If I slice an apple, sprinkle it with raisins, oatmeal , cinnamon... It will trigger my addiction. It "tastes" like apple pie to me, so I react the same way by eating all four portions instead of one. That's why alcoholics don't go around drinking moch beer. So know your own body and triggers.

Folks need to get back to eating whole foods made from scratch from quality primary ingredients. It is not that hard, such as making a salad with oil and vinegar dressing, or cooking a fillet, or boiling an egg. Those that rely on trying to eat "healthfully" with restaurant food, and packaged pre-made food will find it very frustrating to really get it right. Labeling is deceptive and lots of loopholes allow companies to deceive us.

I feel you & understand. You're speaking my language. I AM addicted to sugar, too, but that is going to change. Thank you.

The message is definitely getting out there. Your experience of sugar addiction is a mirror to mine. I am just at the beginning of cutting out sugar! Its been a long journey indeed, talks like this help to keep me motivated.

Coca cola is a drug. It's addictive. Ditch it before you show addiction symptoms.

Nice talk, young lady. I have a great amount of respect for those that admit they have made a mistake, and do everything they can do to correct it. I am looking at the ingredients on a can of Cherry Coca Cola at my co-worker's desk: Sugar 42grams. That is the equivalent of more than 10 teaspoons of sugar, which is more than double the maximum amount that you should consume in one day.
