As I get older and my collecting years get shorter and shorter, I've realized that what really makes me happy are the cards from my childhood (that were long ago thrown out by Mom). Yes, it's nostalgia...but good nostalgia. I can't say I want to pick them all up just because I once owned them, but I do want the ones that have some meaning to me. Great video Brent, really enjoyed your insight and thoughts on the subject.

Very well said Brent. CUI is very real. It ran my collecting habits off the tracks and stole some of the fun. Now,on the nostalgia side. I can see my collecting habits turning that way, but to me that’s part of the fun. Taking me back to my childhood and reliving some of that. But I can see what you mean and how your collection can be influenced because of that. Great video my friend! Collect what you love and don’t let anyone persuade you otherwise.

“Nostalgia is a big driver.” Truer hobby words have never been spoken. Some very thought-provoking stuff here, thanks for sharing.

I’m definitely influenced by nostalgia and that is one of the main reasons I collect. I’m currently collecting under the influence of learning about the history of hockey and have been picking up vintage hockey cards. I didn’t really become a hockey fan until the late 90’s. The things in my watchlist, I now ask the question, “Why do I want this?”. It has cut down on my random purchases of nice looking cards, but I already have a bunch of nice looking cards. I saw the Bob Ross cards and was not interested even though I was mesmerized by him when I was a child, but don’t need to remember him with baseball cards. Fanatics is definitely banking on reaching the nostalgia part of collectors out there. Thanks for sharing.

Brent thanks for reminding us all about collecting simply for enjoyment and nostalgic reasons rather than "collecting under the influence". Your point came across well and appreciated by myself. The cards I've bought while under the influence are among the first I would rid myself of. Thanks for the well thought out video.

Enjoyed hearing your thoughts. For the record, Bob Ross is totally "mid." I like Bob Ross, but he is not some great artist. Mark Twain wrote "Get your facts first, and then you can distort 'em as much as you please," and I think that describes a guy like Picasso perfectly. Picasso could paint like Caravaggio by the time he was teenager and the rest is history. You can tell when someone who has their facts distorts reality, versus someone who does not trying the same. Likewise, you can tell someone who basically has their facts but can't or won't distort much at all, and I think that most charitably describes Ross. It's partly why Picasso is a master and Ross is not. Bit of a digression!
