Sir John Hawkwood, his statue stands in Florence today, the only Englishman with a statue in Florence. I love the story of him passing the Franciscan friars who seen him on horse and said, Peace be amongst you, and he said And may you get no alms, and when asked why he had retorted this he said Peace will ruin me I make my living by war. Condottieri were Italian captains in command of mercenary companies during the Middle Ages, and of multinational armies during the early modern period. They notably served Popes and other European monarchs during the Italian Wars of the Renaissance and the European Wars of Religion. Notable condottieri include Prospero Colonna, Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, Cesare Borgia, the Marquis of Pescara, Andrea Doria, and the Duke of Parma.

They have totally skipped over the people who gave Europe it's renaissance and civilization, the Moors and Saracens.

The Moors were mostly savage killers later relegated to the cold central plains of Andalusia. Europe had advanced civilization and such a view is an exaggeration. The fall of Constantinople led to a great sale of knowledge and fueled the Renaissance. So much was learned from the Arabs - Indian number system, the works of the Greeks, Romans and Persians, astronomy, architecture, Indian metallurgy, medicine, exotic fruit and spices...and on.

In the early 15th century John the 8th, the Basilius of Byzantium visited the Venitians to seek their assistance against the Turks. Within his delegation was an old man called Gemistos Plethon who gave a series of lectures on the teachings of the classical Greek philosophers to the Italians. That was the true beginning of the Italian Renaissance.
