Her playing evokes the same sensibilities as the old school players. Crazy bow speed and liberal use of portamenti, she definitely has a unique sound that separates her from a lot of soloists today. Will be interesting to hear how her musical tastes develop. We’re in for a wild ride

What a performance! Already at the age of 16 María Dueñas showed what an exciting performer she is in the Paganini Concerto No. 1. Here at the age of 20 she brings the same virtuosity and excitement to the Brahms, as well as great sensitivity and nuance. I've never heard a better performance of it. It's hardly surprising that the audience can't restrain their applause after the first movement - although to their credit they don't break the mood of the haunting encore - Fauré's 'Après un Rève' - until the conductor drops his hands. The orchestra, the young conductor Joshua Weilerstein (misspelled in the description), the camera work, and the sound engineering are all excellent. The cadenza isn't credited but, as with her Beethoven performance, it appears to be her own.

Maria Duenas has her own recognisable sound in her playing, which makes, added with her endless musicality, personal way of interpretation and overwhelming technical skills, the full presentation so unique! Her natural charisma is something you have or not have! it can’t be bought anywhere!

I was at the concert for two days,and I ratify myself, this second concert was unbeatable,pure inspiration, power and sensitivity . Impeccable soloist and orchestra both days,the calm and tranquility of Dueñas surprises as much or more that her music.

I don't know why every time I see her performances she reminds me of young Vengerov. Skilled for such a young age, and yet so much room to grow. Her career will be one to keep up with for sure.

Questa è una delle più "belle Poesie" in Musica che abbia mai sentito. Brahms era in un vero stato di Grazia quando l'ha composta: si percepiscono i sentimenti più puri. ❤ Bravissimi tutti per aver saputo interpretare una Musica così mirabile in un modo tanto "soave". ❤ Il mio cuore è più "leggero" e "vola" nello Spazio senza Tempo.

Bravo! Incredible, brilliant technique and beautiful, appealing phrasing - I like the ferocious attacks on some of those chords, even on up bows. That now appears to be her trademark plus her ultra sweet sound in the upper register on the e string. Beginning at 14:11 she changes a few notes although I don't know why - maybe Brahms needed some revision? 🙂

It’s definitely interesting. I also found at 17:56 at the last note before the orchestra takes over, she goes up a note instead of staying on the sustained top note

Bei 36:00-36:05 scheint sich María Dueñas von den schwierigen Passagen des ursprünglichen Violinsolos, dem Teil, der die E-Saite reißt, nicht einschüchtern zu lassen, da andere Geiger normalerweise nervös sind. Ich muss auch Joshua Weilersten, selbst Geiger, für sein hervorragendes Dirigat loben, das seit Leonard Bernstein von keinem amerikanischen Dirigenten mehr gehört wurde.

It seems to be a heavily modified bonmusica. Hers seems to have some sort of extension to the leg on the side that’s touching the C bout

Her playing is flawless. I, however, think her sound would benefit greatly from variations in vibrato. It's so fast and dramatic on every note. Sometimes a wide, slow vibrato is great to make gentle passages more tender. She also moves too much while playing to the point of it seeming flashy/performative. It's very common with young violinists. Nonetheless, she's a wonderful performer.

I agree totally. The dolce and tender passages sound too hysterical and hard, and dare I say it, unlovely. I agree too about the constant head jerking. It’s distracting to watch and it seems to inform the playing which sometimes lacks a kind of calm profundity.

A fabulous performance by Maria Dueñas that is seriously marred by the poor audio quality and distracting video editing. The critical audio issue is the placement of the violin sound to the hard left. It is nearly unlistenable wearing headphones. 🎧 What a pity.
