Concept Art Exercise: How to Paint Creepy-Looking Monsters

Digital Painting Tutorial: Painting Monsters
Concept Art Genre: Sci-Fi Creatures
Subject: How to Paint Scary Monsters
Monsters can be scary as hell - but why? What makes us recoil in horror from one monster but not really care about another?
Humans are hard-wired to recognize certain things about creatures and animals - is this thing a threat? Can it eat me? Should I run from it? As concept artists, we can learn how to use those built-in human reactions to design creatures that really get our viewer's attention.
In this 15 minute video I challenge you to practice blending realism with your artistic technique-to create a compelling monster. So grab your stylus and let's paint your world.
Key Take-Aways: How to create a scary monster by playing with Anatomy, Rendering and Dramatic Lighting to produce an authentic, visceral horror reaction.
→ Evoking Familiar Anatomy
→ Realistic Rendering

I am impressed how your rendering process develops both lights and shadows simultanously! I first do flat local colors, then add shadows and highlights separately. Much more time consuming but more efficient if I want to change light scenarios. It is crazy how many different ways we got to achieve our final results :D

yep, most monsters have a humanoid base, one of the lecturers at uni said if your monster/creature has a humanoid form that has been distorted in some way, the human mind will be scared or uncomfortable looking at it. we recognize the shape but know something is wrong

  • @fowlerillus

Standard round brush for all of this I'm pretty sure. I used a brushy textured smudge to get some of those more expressive marks though.
