Tips for Designing Unique Characters
PRESALE - Going on now through May 27th. Save 20% on Scott’s Character Design Monster Lab using code MONSTER
Scott Flanders is back to help you with your character concept designs! In this free lesson taken from his Monster Lab course, he teaches you his method for brainstorming ideas that you can apply when designing characters. The first part of the lesson covers note taking and writing out a character trait list. You’ll see how Scott pulls from iconic pop culture creatures like the Headless Horseman, Swamp Thing, and Little Shop of Horrors to inspire his own monster designs. In the second half you’ll see how he takes those traits and uses them as a jumping off point for his own thumbnail sketches. If you want more help with your character designs check out his Monster Lab course - proko.com/monsterlab

It's good to know that even masters don't come up with good ideas first time. I think that's what held me back for years: I just assumed if I studied the funamentals of a subject enough, I could just bang out an instant hit, and was frustrated when that never happened. But now I see it's only through iteration that workable ideas can surface.

I’ve been following this channel for years, and proko 2.0 is a huge opportunity for artists that want to learn and get into the industry. The quality with which you explain stuff on this channel has no match, you always make sure that the communication flows 100%, and believe me, I’ve seen tons of tutorials, gumroads, courses, you are undisputed. I just wanted to leave this heartfelt message, because you helped me a freaking lot, and continue to do so, so thank you 🙏🏻 and good luck for the future
Great articulation! I like the strategy of not judging your ideas too early. also thicc+chonk = profit. 4 years of art school and they never directly told us this.

@@ProkoTV hey proko when you where say 10 14 years old were you good at drawing or did you still need practice u mean u always need practice for almost anything and can not stop but what level at drawing do you think you were at sorry for this huge piece of writing Kind regards from a sub for 3 years this the third year
I don’t think you understand how awesome your page is. Thank you for providing so much information for artists. Have referred so many people to your channel!
This makes me want to draw harvestmen all day long. seriously. Looks like fun.
Oh, this is so cool! I'm also mightily impressed by the vast library of references to mythology, farming tools, pop culture monsters and whatnot Scott has in his head :)
I think my favorite is the one with the scarecrow on the back and the enlarged arm on the other side without him holding the tiny PumpkinHead. The previous iteration looked like the PumpkinHead and scarecrow were competing for attention but in this one the scarecrow seems to be well balance.
I love this so much. I limit myself with art and make silly rules but honestly I enjoy messing with concepts and this motivates me to want to change concepts and not just stick and force myself to one thing. This is also encouraging me to actually write stuff down in regards to my process of creating.
I love to study and learn these things. Its a pleasure to watch you sketching or doing your art but then i feel frustrated because what i do is not even close to the things you do. Of course you have years and years of study and experience. For a perfectionist is imposible not to compare our work. I admire you. Someday i will do illustrations like you.
Scott Flanders!!! I can't get enough of Scott and his very very unique approach to design.
I feel like you also gotta know when to tone everything down depending on what you’re designing for. So the design doesn’t become too complex to look at if you’re gonna animate it. You gotta be able to refine everything you’ve built up
This video made me understand for the first time how to properly brainstorm design ideas, thank you so much! 👏
Thanks this helps a lot! Ive been struggling with no new ideas for a long time now. So hope these methods work.
Realizing how much important the writing element is in character design. Thanks for the tips!

I have a question. Can it be applied to human character concept? Thankss.
Thanks for the vid! Just starting to get into character creation, and seeing the nuts and bolts of how you do it is really helpful.
Very motivating! I never thought about the concept of being able to conceptualize all day every day. Definitely understand the need for making system.
I really like this dude. Great tutorials. Great work. The ideas are cool, and on point 🤙
This is awesome! I recently bought a course for cartoon style stuff.. considering buying and learning more during covid. Wanted a monster design course but didn't know where to look
This is some awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing this preview!
Love the way he just says thicc and chonk in a serious and straight face lol
This is great. Both very talented artists, too (the person drawing and the sculptor both.) So glad I found this channel.
this is a really nice process! its really inspiring thank you for this.
Great video, definitely will be participating in your proko course
This is such a creative way of thinking! I need to practice this method.🥰
this guy is so nonchalantly hilarious
THIS MAN IS INSANE HE WENT FROM A STICK WEARING A PUMPKIN TO A JACKASS PUMPKIN WHO COULD RAID A WHOLE VILLAGE ALL BY HIMSELF I AM HONESTLY VERY MUCH IMPRESSED
Love this guy, very inspiring and fun!
i like this idea with the particular aim and the listing of what should it include. Reminds me the dnd planning of my sessions from scratch:)
This is fascinating. Thank you.

Scott is amazinnnggg
Nice, I'm looking for an interesting art course to take.
Neat ideas.
I signed up just yesterday!!! I was soooo excited!!!
Please consider some course from Jama. That guy is so so talented. As a bearer of Marshall´s concept design mindset.... Maybe something like composition of enviroment, light and color stuff etc... Thank you for Proko 2.0
Thank you for sharing your experinces.
That last part is the best fucking advice creators can hear. Pay Attention folks!
I love how smart this guy is, I like the way he thinks
I've been using free writing as a means to warm up and explore ideas in writing, but never made the jump to using the approach with art. See the process over 15 minutes makes it seem like a no brainer.

Brainstorming is an essential part of Art making, whether it’s for character design or something else. The point in art practice is to keep doing it to eliminate cliches (as much as possible) and to create original work. When I was in school, we had to show our brainstorming and thumbnailing stages and discuss them with mentors and classmates. If you have a two or three week project to plan for crit and portfolio, the first week is usually dedicated to brainstorming and thumbnailing.
Ta chido 😃👍

Oh god It’s Scott!!
Surely I'm not the only one that can't take their eyes off that hickey
please add english subtitles
Amazing
HOW do you do this though? That lateral ability to just leap from an original idea to another. I can't do it, my brain is way too linear and literal. I'll sit for hours at a time trying to develop a character or idea and just get nowhere; it's driving me insane!!! It's gotten worse as well, I've been trying to write fiction and have gotten to a point where I haven't written a single line of prose in over five years. I can't develop my ideas beyond basic concepts. Aaaahh... I'm starting to think it's just a neurotype or something, and I'm trying to get into a profession I'm simply not wired for. :'(
I need subtitles or learn english! D': thx anyway!!

Hi
hes soo good. headon over to his Patreon :)
who noticed writing style😮
I don’t know why I find the cursing being censored so funny. Are there any kids watching proko? If they are good for them but it seems like a more mature art channel.
Uuuhh, I'm early today. Nice.
Audrey 2
In the next videos, could you adjust the censoring a bit? Scott Flanders speaks pretty softly, despite his use of curse words here and there. So blocking out the swearing with quite loud bleeps disrupts the flow of the video and is pretty distracting every time. It kind of makes the lesson harder to follow, especially when I (a deaf person) already had to turn up the volume to actually hear Scott well.
i just vitness superman of art world teaching character design hahahaha.
Hmmm
Nice
