    This is what a real sword fight looks like, especially in the context of celtic or Anglo saxon warfare- heavy swords, the sounds of the blade cutting through the air. Today's movies rely too much on CGI and over choreography. In a real battle, warriors would be missing blows, tripping up, getting off balance, shouting, managing their weapons e.t.c.

    No Conan is not underrated. Am I the only one left on youtube who understands the definition of the very simple word, underrated, as it pertains to movies? Conan was a big box office success and its legacy includes every last sword and sorcery film since 1982, as it was the first movie to really demonstrate a viable market for that genre. Though critic’s reviews were mixed, there is 0 indication the movie has ever fallen out of favor with audiences since its 1982 debut. CTB is not an Underrated movie.

    What I love about this movie, is the dark connection he has to Tulsa Doom and his warriors. They killed his family which set in motion, the events of his life from slavery to being a gladiator and then becoming a warrior. I also feel that Conan finally _really_ understood his Father was wrong about the Riddle of Steel and that Doom was right, when Conan's father's sword breaks. We see his father _cast_ the sword in the opening sequence. At the end, Conan sits and ponders: the beginning of Conan's journey was his father's role, the end was Doom's and now Conan is just Conan, but the product of both.

  • @hisdudeness8328

    @hisdudeness8328

    @@bbb462cid actually, they were both wrong. Conan's father's sword broke in battle, showing that steel can become brittle and break over time. Conan chopped off Doom's head, and his zelot followers began to drift away now that they were leaderless, showing that flesh is also weak. It was a moment of immense symbolism when Conan held both up, one in each hand, then cast them both aside. In that moment, he had discovered the true riddle of Steele. It's neither metal or flesh, it's the conviction of one's will. His will kept him alive all those years, honed him into a formidable warrior to physically defeat Doom's minions, and gave him the mental strength to resist Doom's mind games.

  • @bbb462cid

    @bbb462cid

    @@hisdudeness8328 sorry but you're wrong. The ensuing 20 years did not make the sword weak. Firstly, the Atlantean sword Conan found in the bural mound was _much_ older than the sword that broke. Secondly, Conan's father *cast* that sword that broke. If you know anything about materials like steel, you will know that of _course_ the casting broke, But Conan's father placed his trust in it. So he was wrong. Doom has _already told_ Conan about the force of will and demonstrated it himself when the girl jumped to her death. He gave Conan the last clue just before Doom sentenced Conan to death. That proved Doom right. Did you forget that scene? Doom tells Conan "Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart". Conan used both his strength AND his will. Conan used Doom's own revelation against him. I agree 100% about the symbolism but it was Conan casting aside these two fathers.

In doing that Doom created his own destruction in the man that Conan would become. Doom has a history of doing stuff like that. The movie is about that journey. From Lost Boy to Conquering King. This movie is about the first part of that journey. About the anger of a boy becoming the driving force for a man's life and his continuing to exist after he has completed that drive. Also it's just a great sword and sorcery movie beside the deconstruction.

    What I think the most under appreciated part of this scene is is the trap Conan placed. Conan knows from first hand experience the night before he can’t take on Rexor and Thulgrum (I think that’s how his name’s spelled?) at the same time and he also saw Thulgrum swings his hammer around wildly to the point that he almost killed Rexor the night before. So Conan’s solution was to make a trap that no one else would fall for and is a pressure plate so a blunt object has to hit it with enough force. His teachings in the ways of war from the beginning come in to play by ensuring Thulgrum’s out of the way in a manner only he could fall for

    They actually did a far better job on the battle scenes than I remembered them doing. It wasn't overly flashy, the injuries and wounds were more realistic. He'll slash one of them and it would bleed (which half the movies don't really show), but didn't have it bleeding like it came from Evil Dead 2, with an inhuman amount of blood would be produced. Plus they didn't have them wearing full chest armor, only to be killed because the other guy slashed them across the belly where apparently even heavy plate will only provide the protection level of a wet paper towel laid across your chest, for some reason.

    This film is from an era when they could make films, you can watch this film over and over again but modern films like the remake are just terrible. Modern films seem to be made for people who have attention deficit disorders who just want to watch constant CGI affects played as fast as they can, it seems these day all you have to do his hire Hollywood pretty boys and buy as much CGI as you can afford, forget the screenplay, forget the characters, forget character building, forget the story building, forget everything that makes a film good, people will watch a new film and then forget it because it is not worth remembering, but good films will be remembered for generations.

    It wasn't a remake, it was a different take that tried to hew closer to the source material.

    @@tonyvandeyl8575 I watched it. It's okay. I think Jason fits Conan better than Arnie did, but the writing is subpar, like a feature-length version of the worst of the original tales.
