Conan had two fathers, the one from his doomed village, and Thulsa Doom. Conan had two heritages, one of steel, one of flesh. His first father died because he relied only on steel. Doom died because he relied only on flesh. But Conan mastered both, and thus solved the Riddle of Steel.

What most people never mention, that during this scene, Thulsa Doom is clearly talking about using his followers to commit a mass genocide against their own families, their leaders in their Kingdoms, and others in their communities, then later the world. If successful, his cult would have dominated the landscape. It is at the key moment when Conan beheads Thulsa Doom, that the world is made safer. Whole of history was changed in a few seconds.

''When I am gone, you will have never been. what will your world be without me?'' this is reminiscent to the tones and themes of an unhealthy / toxic relationship. Like when an abuser in a relationship keeps their partner trapped by falsely declaring that they need them to survive, and that their world will be nothing if they leave them. Conan for a second was trapped under that thrall, but had the will and spirit to purge himself of Doom forever. Doom was Conan's meaning for life, for decades, the source of his pain, and the end goal that he was working towards. Doom tried to manipulate that need in Conan, but now Conan is free to forge a new destiny and life without Thulsa Doom. Awesome film!

Thulsa Doom was a typical power hungry politician. Most of his damage was done by his followers cause they believed in him. Their whole reality revolved around this man who build himself up to be the chosen one (someone close to a deity or presents himself as one) and if they follow him he would lead them to a better future (or a promised afterlife). With one swoop of Conan's sword that image of him was shattered as how can a mere mortal hurt/kill this deity unless that deity was fake or that mortal is not a mortal after all but a better deity (most would rather attempt to believe a greater deity as the belief in wasting their precious time in worshipping a fake deity for years is too much for the ego to handle). This is what also happened in the movie The Chronicles of Riddick.

I don't think it's that simple. Conan's sword is broken in the scene, symbolizing that steel was not the answer. Thulsa Doom said that flesh was the answer, but was still defeated. It's deliberately ambiguous, but I think that Conan broke Doom's hypnosis and control by finding his own answer in that moment. Whether you believe it's "human will" or "the steel and flesh together" or something else being the solution, I think Conan finding his own answer rather than just accepting either of these two "fathers" is the key. It wouldn't be so memorable if it was just a simple revenge story about remembering his Father's words and copying his Father's answer.

That's why Doom was such an interesting villain. Those who followed him did so willingly. It also mirrors the beginning, when Doom tries to mesmerize Conan's mother. She still resists and doesn't submit, so he kills her. It could be nothing, or a little nod that the strength of Conan's will came from his mother, not his father. It also has a logical flow throughout the rest of the film, as most women fall to Doom quite easily but not Conan's mom, she had that fire of defiance that carried on through her son. Thulsa's one mistake was her constantly referred to Conan's father, thinking the mother irrelevant...But he completely missed that Conan was holding her hand when she died, that he watched her resist him. Damn this movie is so fucking good.

If I could go back in time and tell my younger self to avoid all contact with the one person who hurt me more than anyone else, would that have been the right thing to do? Probably, but at the same time, I'm grateful for the wisdom I've gained from that experience. It made me who I am today. This movie is about nothing less than meaning of power and whether suffering and injustice are redeemed by the strength that we might gain from triumphing over dire adversity. Are they?
