CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) rescues a powerful warrior named Zula (Grace Jones) at the request of Princess Jehnna (Olivia d'Abo).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a character created by Robert E. Howard, this fast-paced, occasionally humorous sequel to Conan the Barbarian features the hero (Arnold Schwarzenegger) as he is commissioned by the evil queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas) to safely escort a teen princess (Olivia D'Abo) and her powerful bodyguard (Wilt Chamberlain) to a far away castle to retrieve the magic Horn of Dagon. Unknown to Conan, the queen plans to sacrifice the princess when she returns and inherit her kingdom after the bodyguard kills Conan. The queen's plans fail to take into consideration Conan's strength and cunning and the abilities of his sidekicks: the eccentric wizard Akiro (Mako), the wild woman Zula (Grace Jones), and the inept Malak (Tracey Walter). Together the hero and his allies must defeat both mortal and supernatural foes in this voyage to sword-and-sorcery land.

This was a very Conan scene. He didn’t “Free” her per se, he merely evened the odds by cutting the chain and making a small hole in their ranks. From there it was her job to either free herself through her own strength or die a proper warriors death not chained to a damn stump. A lesser writer would have had Conan either give some sappy speech to the town or smack them all around on his own because Conan Stronk.

What Conan did here, mirrors the myth of how the Cimmerians learned to forge steel from Crom. The first Cimmerians were refugees from the sunken continent of Atlantis, who came to Cimmeria. The land was harsh, with many wild animals and other barbaric tribes harrasing them. Desperate, they prayed to Crom for help. Crom stepped out of his mountain, was pretty annoyed and told them: "I will make you stupid mortals a gift. I will teach you how to forge steel,so you can make weapons to hunt and fight off your enemies. But you will have to survive on your own strenght. If you can´t manage that, than screw you you´re not worthy surviving.I´m not gonna bother any more with you and I don´t want to be bothered again by you or you will taste my wrath." That´s why Cimmerians don´t pray to Crom or worship him like the other races of the Hyborean world worship their gods. In the first Conan movie,John Millius changed this myth with the whole "riddle of steel" thing, which was never mentioned before in any Conan books or comics. So,basically Conan acted here similar to how Crom acted with his ancestors.

Then there is also the issue of Zula being a bandit, who had come to rob that village. That would have been an awful and inhumane way to go out. But its not like she can really claim any moral high ground.

Zula is my favorite character in this movie, Grace Jones nailed the character. I love how in this scene, after seeing a sword drawn warrior on horse coming to her, she simply walks in his direction, like she understood this would be the time of her execution. Then she not even flinches as Conan brandishes the sword, die by a warrior´s hand would be a less shamefull than what waited for her. Once the rope is cut after a short confusion, that triumphant "I`ll be free or die trying!" smile, finally she kick the villagers asses so hard they flinch for every move she makes, a very well placed comic relief, her expression in the end of scene is pure characterization gold! Not a single word, but the character is stablished as a proud, fierce, brave and loyal warrior.

There's some fantastic character interaction here that makes this scene so funny, yet awesome at the same time. The princess pleads with Conan to help her, pointing out how she's outnumbered. Good sense of compassion from the princess, for a tough warrior bandit. But one has to also appreciate Conan's wisdom in simply cutting her loose, rather than fight the thugs himself or even help her afterwards, knowing that Zula can fully take care of herself once freed. Granted, she was doing a good job even before Conan cut her loose. Grace Jones was absolutely perfect for the role. She's one of the great strong female characters in film, such as Sigourney Weaver, another personal favourite.

In the STAR TREK canon, Captain Kirk was the only person to beat the Kobayashi Maru No-Win Scenario at the Academy. He didn't fix it so that he'd automatically win, just made it POSSIBLE to win. As Kirk said himself, "I still had to do the winning." Conan here did the same thing - he made it POSSIBLE for Zula to win, but she still had to do the winning.

I love this scene. I love how she faces him without fear, as if she's saying : come on big guy do your worst. When he cuts the rope, she doesn't thank him or plea for his help, she smiles and get back into the fight. That is a true warrior. Conan only gave her a fair chance, nothing else. That encounter allowed Zula to earn Conan's respect, and by giving her a fair chance, Conan's earned Zola's loyalty and respect. Warriors don't need more than that.

I remember reading in the comics that Conan didn't let her loose with his sword. Instead he stabbed a sword to the ground near her and just said: "Now you're in equal ground." Like this scene, Zula smiled and began hacking up people that chained her until she was pretty much surrounded by corpses and her captors running away from her---WHILE STILL IN CHAINS. That scene in the Conan comics was so metal.

Here Grace is using skill and expertly placed staff strikes against a group of normies to stun and intimidate them, not hand to hand combat. The director yelled "CUT". But she just kept swinging. 5 stage hands died that day.

How many of you made the connection between this scene and the wolf/dogs scene from the first movie? In the first movie he was chased down while in chains and only evened the odds once he was able to free himself from the chains with his atlantean sword. That’s why he freed her. The villages were the dogs/wolves.

The fantastic Grace, in any situation she acts, does it perfectly; she is really unique.
