In my opinion, this music MAKES the movie. John Milius’ story is solid, Arnold is the right actor for the part. James Earl Jones is an absolute treasure, as is Max Von Sydow (there are NO small parts). But Basil Poledouris’ score elevates this movie to another level, and brings the right emotional notes at each scene to make this a treasured classic.

Not even nominated. For a number reasons. 1) Genre. The "it's just dumb swords and sandals fantasy movie". 2) It most likely wasn't promoted. The producers didn't campaign. 3) De Laurentis, Millius etc were considered a bad joke by the people that "mattered"
John Milius’s Conan the Barbarian is one of the greatest fantasy films ever made and the epic score by Basil Poledouris played a very large part in that achievement.

As a young man stationed in SouthEast Asia during the Vietnam War, there were periods of time that the base would be closed. During these periods, I had gone over to the base USO station 'to hang out'. I found a complete collection of Robert E. Howard's books..I poured over those books from cover to cover, and the old maps on the inside covers. Come forward to 1982, the exhilaration, joy, and anticipation that welled in me, with the announcement of the "Conan the Barbarian" movie. The magic of Thoth Amon and Thulsa Doom has never faded, and Conan overshadowing the landscape has never stopped!!
Can you imagine going back in time 150-200 years to Europe and playing this to an audience? They would be blown away!
Conan soundtrack and movie remain some of the most underrated masterpieces of the age of cinema. They both embody the essence of what a story is, a man carving his own path through the tragedy of the world around him. Could have been a Homeric Epic, but with so few words and its music backdrop, I think cinema is the only way this story could, and should, be told.
Just hearing the first bar of 'Theology' immediately conjures up the image of Subotai appearing at a trot from out of the desert, as Conan hangs half conscious, suspended on the trunk of the dead tree. Amazing film, and totally amazing score. Poledouris was such a gifted composer, an absolute master of the highest order. RIP, maestro Basil.

Brother, for that comment I gift you with a cool fun fact. In the documentary, Director John Milius mentions that the Atlantean sword has an engraving which reads "Suffer no guilt ye who wields this blade in the name of CROM". 😎
The chills is unreal... This soundtrack is not from this world, every time i hear it i get chills and when they play the riders of doom then im crushing my enemies in my mind like conan did :')
One of the greatest stories of my childhood. I shall forever be thankful for that. The music helps tell the story. All of it still makes me feel like I did when I first heard it. Simply amazing.
Conan the Barbarian had a profound effect on my life. I had never made anything until I saw the movie at 15. I began making swords and sculptures afterwards. Changed my life. My ability to make what I could draw opened many doors at the time. Wonderful movie and truly inspiring music scores.
We will never get another soundtrack like this , it just translate the word " Epic " into music

Basil Poledouris gave us Starship Troopers , The Blue Lagoon to name just 2 of his great scores but with Conan The Barbarian he reached new heights , a majestic score , music to be enjoyed with good speakers or headphones. Loved it then when first released in 1982 , love it now , a true classic of film music.

One of the greatest, most epic soundtracks for a movie composed. Right up there with John William's work.
This made Conan a Great film!

By the four winds - this is eternal epic! just a masterpiece that Basil Poledouris create with that music. Thanks to that concert.
No one can convince me otherwise, when scores are pondered and written - this is the bar everyone hopes to meet. Some are memorable, they get stuck in your head and its repetitiously unforgettable. This one though, This one sticks because its legendary. It's almost as if they made the movie to go along with the score because that's how damn good it is.
This movie is completely underrated and imo a masterpiece, as was the music ❤
Conan The Barbarian paved the way for many other films of the genre but 40 years later none has ever succeeded Conan the Barbarian, the film and the music are two unique pieces just like Ben-Hur they can never be imitated !
Masterpiece!
This is so chilling.. Brings back memories of seeing warriors fighting

Basil Poledouris was an amazing composer and if he lived and composed this music 100s of years ago, we would talk about him like we do Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and all the other old masters.
