You can take it pretty far even to the point of creating custom triggers that will set off an event in case someone is able to break into the computer case to try and connect USB headers or the like.

Doesn't even need to be an EV. Nowadays pretty much every can that you can buy new (except a Caterham, those are as analogue as they get) has its engine, suspension, steering, etc connected to the electronics you find in the interior, so if that dies, the car most likely will die as well. Hell, my uncle is a mechanic, and he once had a Mercedes shutting down its engine every 5 km, not because there was something wrong with the engine of fuel pumping, but because of a bug in the programming related with the AddBlue system. The car was “fixed” with a fucking software update at Mercedes itself without a single bolt being loosed. So if a bug can brick your car, imagine a USB killer. Thank god I drive a 1993 car, don't have to deal with that shit in the slightest :P.

That and avionics is located in the cockpit, gl getting in there with a USB killer. end point: planes are built to be redundant. Because, as with most things, it is up to people how they use it. A man could use a truck to run down a bunch of holiday shoppers (too soon?), so should we never sell motor vehicles? A knife can be used to stab/cut someone, should we never sell knives? All it takes is one person to have a legitimate use case for this that ISN'T illegal (say, making a video about it?) and at that point we should trust people to do the right thing, even if sometimes they don't. Creating a nanny state where we wrap everything in bubble wrap and constantly surveille people to keep them from hurting themselves and each other is not the proper solution.

Thomas Champliaud a USB dead drop is a publicly hidden USB that you could access anytime, you can put any file in it and share it to other people who will use the dead drop in the future. If you change the USB to a killer one you could kill the laptop of the person using it.

Incase you have important documents on your computer (or something of importance) you could quickly plug it into your own computer if you were ever atttacked or someone tried to steal your computer and get things from it. I assume this is one of many reasons.

+THEmickTHEgun Even if the HDD's internals are dead the data would still be there and readable by specialists as they are based on magnetism, not electricity. If you want to protect data you can just encrypt them and don't need to wreck any hardware.

I already design my USB devices with 1500kv isolation and it still takes up board space but not as much as you would think the issue is that even with isolation, you need to also have a spark gap for high voltages.

lol funny fraud,, usb is 5 volts.. it would require a transfor 5inches sqaure to step it up to 100 volts lets alone 300 lol amazing these idiots dont think about learning basic electronics... usb killer, aka usb PORT... like it says.... not pc killer its a usb killer lol which only really take 7 or 8 volts....

I am making a SD card Killer, which does potentially the same thing, just fits in SD card slots. Might send you guys a dev copy. Also, a dev copy of the Micro SD Killer, but so far, the Micro SD takes 2 minutes to kill most devices.

Actually, the threat is completely different: you leave this lying around, people pick it up and plug it in. Of course you can destroy a PC that you have physical access to, but it's hard to make someone hit their PC with a sledgehammer...

You can protect it by putting your pc in a case (not the case the pc is using) like a case around that and you need a key for access to the usb ports.

could unhook the front usb headers, though inconvenient, could also put a lockable backplate on the back of the pc to restrict access. could also have a lockable front usb, which connects the front usb header to a key to turn their ports on and off.

You guys should talk to some engineer before publicly testifying on engineering stuff. Optocouplers won't work on this case. The power lines could still be attacked, and no one will place an Optocoupler in front of a USB 3.1 data line for signal integrity and cost reasons.

you could protect the data lines with small optos. the power lines of the usb could be protected by just having a semiconductor fuse paired with a snubber + some kind of heavy duty zenner. I have thermistors that will cut a 2000v transient to about 2 volts and if you cascade 2 of them well you can be protected against this kind of attack (you can buy fully made circuits, sinetamer has great ones. ) of course if you have a source with a low output impedance there is no way of protecting a board. It will be like using a welding electrode in de usb port lol!

It's not that simple on this particular case. We are talking about very High Frequency lines, you would have to use an optocoupler that won't disturb a 5GBit line and respond on the same speed, that's not going to be practical on a cost perspective, those are not the cheap optocouplers we usually find. Also zeners, TVS and etc. are made for fast transients this won't be an occasional disturbance on the line, this will be a step-up converter, this could fry all this protections by not leaving them time to dissipate the energy as heat, not even mentioning the PCB clearances you will have to leave for the High Voltage isolations to avoid creepage so the arcs wont jump to other exposed pads nearby. So practically this will increase considerably the cost and size of the product so no manufacture will care to implement it. Theoretically, yes, you can protect any line you want from any kind of voltage, but this case it's just beyond practical.

This makes me think of DMA attacks where an evil device reads secrets from RAM. This wasn't seen as a flaw before we had trusted boot and signed kernels, because if an attacker can come inside your building and plug a weird homemade box into a Thunderbolt port on your server, you've already failed at security.

Optocoupler workaround: two USBs which are connected and plug into two separate ports. One gets high voltage and the other gets ground. The voltage then arcs through the optocoupler and the rest of the motherboard...

The great thing about testing this in a car is that you can probably replace the fuse.

I'm not familiar with arc lighters. From my knowledge of electrics, I would guess that they use higher amperage rather than voltage. But again, I'm unfamiliar. Either way though, they can still probably murder electronics pretty good.

Caverri arc lighters do shock you with 8000v. Most people think it's just some high frequency noise that doesn't hurt you but iv'e tried putting a metal piece and make contact with the beam and it does hurt. but the beam is so small that only tiny stuff can touch it but i wouldn't try

They do sometimes, but fuses are too slow for sensitive electronics equipment. You could use a TVS diode along with active protection circuitry and optocouplers for data lines, but that's expensive and not really necessary (it's like having bulletproof windows in your car)

Couldnt you put a fuse in line with the usb ports that blow when too much power is sent through it?

On my PC it would actually easy to pretect the 2 USB ports on the front, because my PC uses a weird Way of connecting the to the motherboard. thre are 2 USB Ports soldered directly to the motherbord, into which 2 extension cables are plugged. So i could plug a protecton thingy in between those and the front USB ports would be secure.
