@@progperljungman8218 The minute taken by that guitar solo blew the roof off on the pair of yamaha 1000s I was listening to, the pair powered by Macintosh amps, and stoned on Marijuana. Originally, I think this song was meant to be tongue and cheek humor. I think they stumbled upon a greater plan along the way. 1974 was the year. They worked on it for two years. They didn't introduce the strings until the forth song! Sixth, seventh, and eighth songs were also backed by strings! No inferior B-side to the album. Harmonica in the intro reaches out to grab the audience and makes them behave (Shhh...).

Interesting choice for a first Supertramp song, as it is the closing track of a cohesive album. For a great Supertramp slow burn, try the tune “Even In The Quietest Moments.” It’s really one you can get lost in, and has a beautiful melody.

What Crisis?(1975) Even in the Quietest Moments (1977) Breakfast in America (1979) Two very good albums Famous Last Words (1982) Brother Where You Bound (1985) You'll find pop, jazz-rock fusion, prog rock, all mixed together with two distinct vocal styles, heavy keyboards, with tasty guitar riffs/solos and sax solos/riffs thrown in at just the right time....band member Roger Hodgson also has solo works Supertramp was founded in 1970...listen to the Crime of the Century album as a whole, you'll think it is what was called a " concept album", but it wasnt( the band has publicly denied this), which makes it even cooler, IMHO

For me, it's more sadness than loneliness. My interpretation of the lyrics is it is reflecting on how humans ultimately destroy their environment through their own greed, wastefulness, and consumerism. Over the centuries, humans have spoiled natural beauty, and replaced it with sky scrapers, neon lights, and refuse. And the crime of the century is basically how humans will go beyond the confines of our planet, and destroy the universe. Or, an alternative ending, is on our planet we are truly alone, and the universe will not save us from destroying ourselves.

I only know Supertramp from their Breakfast in America album, which was a middle ground between proggy art-rock and pop/soft rock, perhaps most strongly influenced by The Beatles. Great album, but I've never done a discog run for them. This was a nice track, definitely more spacey-proggy than anything on BiA, but even here I think you can hear their penchant for melody and hooks, it's just not as concisely written. Still has me interested in hearing their other work. For another band that kinda blends proggy/art-rock with pop, XTC is a must-listen. One of my top 10 bands. Their River of Orchids is beautiful.

I'm the one who asked you to do this reaction so THANKS, THANKS A LOT. CoC was the first album (cassette) I bought by myself when I was 9 and has molded my taste till this day (a journey between ambients, nice melodies, the feeling in the voices not the meening of the lyrics -cause I didn't understand English at that age-) This is a semi-conceptual album. Even so, I often wonder what would happen when someone listens to it starting by it's end. I didn't have that chance but I'm pretty sure if I had to I'd feel the strong need to listen to the whole thing, to know what happened, what lead this people there. For me this song is a hook, much more than others more flashing, defined or directs songs I really enjoyed this reaction. Many thanks again. Truly

An organ bleeds into and also supports Roger's guitar solo. The organ then picks back up on the other side. That instrument was probably played by John Helliwell until the strings picked up and took over allowing him to play his sax solo. I found it challenging when listening to Procol Harem trying to pinpoint and differentiate between the organ and piano playing - the two being upfront and dueling it out and not just in the background backing up the usual lead guitar. They were amazing at that. Supertramp was just as masterful in that regards. Again, you missed the addition of the organ and the special way it bleeds into the guitar.

John Helliwell speaks of he and Rick having to redo his sax solo after adding the strings. The impression I got remembering reading about Supertramp before Roger somewhat broke the groups synergistic spirit, Rick and Roger would duel it out in a playful way in their song writing. It really didn't matter whom would play what instruments as John Helliwell played almost every instrument. It was never the intention of the group to know whom played what in any particular song. In order to push his own genius, Roger betrayed the Synergy purpose of the group.

Thinking that this album was released in 2010 really goes to prove that a prerequisite for timeless music is great percussion. Most don't realize how great Rick Davis was as a drummer. As a foundation, he playing the piano and Bob Siebenberg on the drums created a wonderful "wall of sound" together.

@@Chris-filosifer64 Indeed, yet because of the foundation of great percussion underlying it, the album sounds like it could have been produced yesterday. Again, a prerequisite for timeless music is great percussion. Most don't realize this aspect about Supertramp. They weren't just a pop or blues band. They were extremely proficient. Rick says often that he just moved over from the drums to the piano. In the song School, during the songs piano interlude, the buried special effects of the whistles were performed by John Helliwell and the vibe slaps by Rick Davies.

There never was a Rick and Roger song. They were all meant to be Supertramp songs. The song school, for example, while it is said to be a Roger thing, is so impacted by Rick's opening harmonica and the build up to his piano solo that his passion steals the show. When Roger decided to go Elton John Solo, the other members understood who was the real synergy of the group.

So many layers to unpack, but those few lyrics will help put things into context, as well as the theme as shown on the album cover. Could be that the reason for the fade out on this piece was purpose designed to not resolve. ........The universe is infinite. Maybe just over thinking, but these people were brilliant. I think when it comes to older media of any format we need someone to introduce them to the younger generations. Maybe that uncle that's super into prog rock, or the grandparent that loves classic films, etc. Most people don't seem to actively seek out older media, especially when the original impression is that "it isn't good" -- like when your parents put on the classic radio station when you're a kid. With that said, I never had anyone in my life that was into 70s prog. I know the names of the bigger groups just because their stardom is so large (Pink Floyd for example) but I never listened to any of it. But now I have a bunch of people requesting prog rock and I'm getting to explore this era of music.

Lovely to hear a composer's reaction to this great piece of music, just one of many from this brilliant band, I'm 70 and I bought this album when I was in my mid twenties, and hearing it today still gives me goosebumps! Just one suggestion, when you said you didn't hear the lyrics, that's because you were talking over them !! Please try not to do that, And the lyrics in this song go some way to explaining what the 'crime of the century' is! You missed the most important few lines in the song "who are these men of lust, greed and glory? rip off the masks and let's see, but that's not right, oh no, what's the story,? but there's you, and there's me" - powerful stuff, we are the people who are destroying our planet and wasting its resources, that's what I get from this song, please Brian, listen to the lyrics ! 😉 'fools overture' is your next one for sure ! This was my era, but I'm only familiar with their 'hit' songs, which I like, and which stay in the memory. but they never grabbed me enough to add the band's albums to my extensive record collection. (But, then, I never bought any Queen albums either.)
