I know I'm late to the party, but I think there's an important part of the song I don't see anyone told you about in the comments. The final part is a "reimagination" of The Lord's Prayer, but a "demanding" one, full of reproach and complains. It closes both the album's story, and the song (which is the end of the album's story on itself), so, thematically, the final "prayer" wraps up everything in what basically is an "Our Father, why have you abandoned us?!", the same way the piano wraps up some of the musical themes, melodies and harmonies (not just of the song, of the whole album) as you pointed out so sagaciously. I believe the rest of important stuff you need to understand the piece's context has been explained to you, already. PS: regarding comedy/seriousness, I thought other explanations went into this, but looks like they don't. Yes, it's a very serious song, BUT this band is light hearted, even if most of their discography are concept albums and they deal with serious matters (this song closes the second album of the Gaia trilogy, which is about the relationship between mankind and nature), they never go too deep, ominous or complex. I'd say they are inspired by the spirit of german power metal, like Helloween or Edguy, where it's clear they don't take themselves too seriously, even when they deal with serious themes. If you listen to any song by Mago de Oz you'll notice that lightheartedness, that "fun" that, of course, is also related to being a band with strong folk elements, which naturally lead you to "polka dance" their music. Also, their target has always been teens and young adults (even if some of us keep listening to them), so I'd say that's also important: Mago de Oz is not Tool, it's not made to inspire you an existential crisis, but so you grow up being the best possible version of yourself. I'd say you could compare them to Ghost in that mater, where there is a lightheartedness and theatricalness around the serious subjects the band deals with.

So, there's a 3 album opus by the band called Gaia. This is the second album on the trilogy and this is a double album in itself. It's a theme album and this one deals with the story of an indigenous woman and the Holy Inquisition. This song closes the album by revealing that the woman is the reincarnation of Gaia, goddess of the earth. The song is a protest against the church and their ideology and all damage done to a lot of people through the years. So thematically all the album makes sense and also yes, this song is an horizontal slice of their music and inspirations. I used to be very into this band in my early metal years.

The lyrics are not comedy. It's about religion and how it was imposed on certain people. It talks also about torture and injustice. Nevertheless, I loved your reaction to the music. I get how it is surprising to listen to all that. Thanks for reacting to this song. It is one of my favorites.

I mean, it kinda makes sense. The band don't even take themselves too serious, so it feels rather light-hearted and as a result almost comedic. The music video of Molinos de Viento is a perfect example of that. Thing is, you can be light-hearted and still serious at the same time.

Mago de Öz it's a very theatrical band, so yeah it's a comedy with some grim parts similar to a theater play, thematically if i recall correctly this album is thematic about the Spanish inquisition persecution, so it's a song with chapters similar to a play with each "chapter" having a different sound with an specific vocal delivery and lyrical themes with some parts being a dialogue between 2 characters in verbal and philosophical oposition. You nailed the comment about the heavy inspiration of other artists, this being commonplace in Spanish speaking countries adapting parts of not so commonly traditional musical genres and adapting them to their purposes.

Ok so I’ve seen the comments and nobody explained really what this is about, mago de oz is even deeper than just music every song has a story actually every album, this is a story about the inquisition to explain it better its literally like a short book every song means something… this is the last song, in the inquisition there is a woman she is about to be killed/ murdered in the fire, there are different roles people play in this there is the inquisitor, the person that guards the woman they are about to kill, the inquisitor says to her “redeem yourself this is the time that you can regret of loving the god of nature and start adoring catholic religion” there is the guard that made a conexion with the person they are about to kill and he says “i dont want to be here i have to but dont want to” there is gaia which is the woman telling her “dont worry i will help you i eill protect you” this specific song starts basically at the “trial” or moments just before she is about to get killed during the song she actually gets killed on fire and there is the last part that says “now im finally air” thats just after she dies, the whole 21 minutes are a critic about the church and their time in the inquisition time. The song finishes beautifully. In a prayer asking “god” to be more human like to help with tings that matter the prayer asks for a more human god. This song is a pice of art there is no other word for that just a pice of art… just my favorite song in all times

Late to the party, just two things: Mago de Öz first came together in 1988 so it makes sense that they stick so much to late 80s-90s rock. There are two main male vocalists, a female vocalist and a choir to harmonize and that's why there's so much vibrato and vocal harmonization.

I love Mägo de Oz! They’re the closest band I’ve found to the spirit of Spinal Tap. When they go over the top, they go Over. The. Top. Great example is the much shorter opening track to this album. Not for a reaction, but check it out for a guaranteed laugh. But somehow it’s still cool too. (You have seen “This is Spinal Tap”, yes?) Volaverunt Opus 666 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWiarMx6hJO7oso.html I saw Mägo live a few years ago here in Washington DC. The crowd was amazing - on my left a leather clad dude with face tats plus an inverted cross on his neck, and on my right a couple of teenyboppers out on a date. Everyone jumping and singing along.

Hello, long time fan of your channel. For some reason the message along the link was not shown to you, this is what I typed originally with this request: This is Mägo de Oz´s - "La Cantata Del Diablo" (The Devil´s Cantanta). Its a band from Madrid, which plays Heavy Metal with folk and celtic elements (a bit power metal-ish in this particular song). The song features 4 singers and is a critic on institutional religion through a story (core song last 18 mins) and it ends with a sort of "prayer" (last 3 mins). So yeah, it was supposed to be a serious message behind the lyrics, but that did not match that great with their particular style and the vibes they wanted to transmit to the audience, since their music has been for a long time songs for fun and with lots of jokes, so they still sound merrier than they would have wanted to. Glad you enjoyed it nonetheless! Edit: I got the lyrics translated (did it for another channel), pretty lenghty. I could paste them here or to your email, if you would prefer that.

  • @CriticalReactions

    @CriticalReactions

    2 жыл бұрын

That makes a lot of sense. I could see there being a roughness to a song when the band is known for, shall we say, less serious music but they do want to talk about a serious topic. As for the lyrics, you can copy-paste them if you like. Someone else provided a link to a translation but I'm sure having multiple sources will be better in case some concepts get lost in one or the other translation.

@@CriticalReactions Alright, actually yeah, have seen that translating and it´s ok-ish, just few corrections here and there, that hopefully will keep the essence of the song: “Devil’s Cantata (The Lord has sent me)” In Nomine Diabulus et Belial, Satan, Lucifer, Astaroth et Yahve The night falls, eternal fog The light is hiding away Cold wastelands, it breaks, it freezes The tears from the heart. I Dream of a life that seems coming to an end Broken in pieces, in fear, it is hard to live Dreams of death keep me awake Holy condemnation, act of faith. In the name of the only religion We sentence you and condemn you To the pious purification Of fire and pain. In the hands of God you must place Your soul, your belongings and all your sins Accept Christ and entrust yourself Because soon you will answer to him. Diabulus in Gaia, missit me Dominus Diabulus in Gaia, missit me Dominus I would like to be the wind to be able to flee from my fate To shut down the silence, and make the terror go mute, I would like to not die. I will create another life for me I will decorate my dreams and cover them with your kisses - she thought- Burn my soul as well! Do you deny Satan, his acts and addictions Of the necromancy, the magic and the Tarot? I am the virtue of the Church and its principles If you do not repent your soul will be damned… (Chorus:) Today the freedom is on slumber and remains in silence Today the freedom has closed because of death Today the freedom has died of sorrow and melancholy Today there is no freedom, today God is not here and will not come... I wish to be forgotten, never be remembered, I would like to be a breeze, and thus caress, life once more So cold is the promise of another life next to God If he was not present in this life nor he was known, the stake will be my end Before dying and the fire works its way, Do you accept Christ, the Church and its power? Do you renounce the “god” called nature? Gaia is mother only of sins and terror (Chorus:) In Nomine Diabulus et Belial, Satan, Lucifer, Astaroth et Yahve Gaia Gaia Today life rains sorrow, Drops of despair. My tears are rivers, veins Bleeding out my heart The memory of a woman Are the kisses she received On your lips I will live on And in your oblivion, I will die. Today my tears want to commit suicide, Leaned, to die on your skin They were born dry and thirsty My cry today wants to die. Like a promised kiss To your soul is my voice, I am what has died and what has lived I am the calm, I am your God Close your eyes and I will take you Where dreams become songs Life is painful, I will heal you Sleep and dream, my voice lull you Today my tears want to commit suicide, Leaned, to die on your skin They were born dry and thirsty My cry today wants to die. If your tears want to commit suicide Save them because you are going to cry. You will cry oceans of peace, Sleep, there is no more pain now. In the name of freedom, Faith in oneself and Peace, Burn the flags, say no to religion And may your god be a song, Composed by your heart. And may your country be wherever your feet will take you Diabulus in Gaia, missit me Dominus Diabulus in Gaia, missit me Dominus Missit me Dominus Missit me Diabulus Missit me Satanas Now I finally am air, And my curse will take course, The end of this church will soon come My voice will wake up. (Chorus:) Today the freedom is on slumber and remains in silence Today there is no freedom, today God is not here, Today God is not here, today God is not here and will not come (“Psalm of the Disinherited”) Our Father, of all of us, Of the poor, the homeless, Of the excluded and unprotected, Of the disinherited and the owners of the misery, Of those who follow you, and of us that no longer believe in you. Come down from heavens because here is hell Come down from your throne, because here there are wars, hunger, injustice There is no need for you to be One and Three With one willing to help, would be enough. What is your kingdom? The Vatican? The Banks? The High Politics? Our kingdom is Nigeria, Ethiopia, Colombia, Hiroshima. Our daily bread are the rapes, Gender violence, child abuse, Dictatorships, climate change. I am daily tempted, There is no morning in which I am not tempted to create a god A god that lives in the land, In the valleys, the rivers A god that lives in the rain, That travels through the wind and caresses our souls. A god of the sad ones, the homosexuals A more human god... A god that does not punish but teaches. A god that does not threaten but protects, That if I fall, will lift me up That if I get lost, reach out his hand to me. A god that if I fail, does not blame me, And if I doubt, understands me, Because that is why he gave me intelligence, To doubt everything. Our Father, of all of us, Why have you forgotten us? Our Father, blind, deaf and unoccupied. Why have you forsaken us?

Another great band from Spain in the progressive rock style is Triana. It's like listening a mix of Pink Floyd and King Crimson with Flamenco. They have many great songs. I would recommend you Abre la Puerta (Open the Door), released in 1975, months before Wish you were Here by PF.

I don't necessarily think you laugh comically but rather as a natural reaction to the appreciation? Maybe I'm wrong but it happens to me usually. Where one laughs as a reaction to the creativity and such. Haha. --- Hmm... This band I guess you can say is one of the most successful in Spanish-language rock/metal. It's gone through different line-up changes and often invite guest musicians/vocalists to be featured. So all the extra vocalists on the tracks are usually invitees. Anyway, I enjoyed your video and your commentary. They often end their albums with these long variable 10+ munuite tracks like this. Other ones in this style by them are "Satania", "Finisterra" and "Atlantia". A little more about them: Like a lot of other bands in metal, all their albums are usually concept albums with a written storyline and characters where each song is a chapter in the story line. This particular song is the final chapter trilogy they have and each vocalist is playing a character. (rock opera, some call it) Lyrical themes are sometimes serious but other times are comical or just fun/feel good. (folklore, politics, emotions, partying and drinking or rock n roll) They usually take a "We don't follow specific labels" type approach to the music. A lot of people like them. Others not so much. Each will have their opinions I guess. Anyway, I really apologize for rambling on. I could talk about this stuff for hours: Probably true for you as well. Thanks for the video. Take care. -Cheers.

Probably my most favorite reaction of this song so far and you didn't even understood a word of it xD To us, this is actually a very serious song, not a comedy at all, but to sum it up: La Cantata del Diablo (roughly meaning "The Rhapsody of the Devil") is pretty much the composer's (Jesús María Hernández Gil, AKA: "Txus") hatred for the catholic church and the concept of a patriarchal god condensed into a song, the poem at the end was just he putting out his leftist opinions on certain topics such as homosexuality and climate change but blaming god instead of man (we're latinos, you'll have to excuse our costume of putting god into everything even if we claim not believing in it). I got to admit, when I was a teenager this was one of my favorite songs both lyrically and musically, but later in life you get to mature and yeah, a more adult person who claims to be an atheist doesn't really resonate with this song that much, but some parts of it are still nostalgic gold and right now I just appreciate it for what it is: a part of my youth and many other latino metalheads.

That familiar part inminute 16 is probably the one that sounds like one american song about some devil and some fiddleing invovled, I dont remember the title song, it was in guitar Hero. It totally sounds like it. Mago de Oz sed to have maybe another guitarrist, I dont remember but their guitar and bass gave them a pretty characteristic sound, if you hear earlier works you can definitely tell. Maybe that new lead guitar is more "gifted" but doesn't deliver that previous unique sound. The last part is a political left leaning twist of "Our father" which is kind of the closure to the previous message of the song, that was pretty much about that, but told in a sort of story. About the influences, if you know that there are lead voices that come from other "famous groups", you can interprete, I do, all those different sounds as fanservice to those who have followed those groups. Anyway seeing the cover of the album I can only think of them as a joke.

It is describing a fight between evil and good, but in this song the evil is winning. It make you think if evil is real evil, when religion (good) has been separating humanity. The chorus is latin it is saying in the name of satan: In nomine Diabolus et Belial, Satan, Lucifer, Astaroth et Yavhe especially in this: Diabolus in Gaia Missit me Dominus Diabolus in Gaia Missit me Dominus Missit me Dominus Missit me Diabolus Missit me Satanas it is saying master satan has sent me.

So this song has a very complex story and it’s a real one. When we were conquered by the spaniards, our cultures were totally destroyed by their religion and this song it talks about Azaak, who is refusing to renounce and disconnect from her beliefs. Due to this, she is burned alived for not being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Maybe you are very young and you think that the Anglo-Saxon bands have invented music and that all the influences are from there. The Celts, for example, arrived from Spain to England and when you hear a bagpipe you say it is Scottish when music was made with them in Galicia long before the Celts arrived in Scotland. Let me give you some advice, do not look for your influences in cultures that are unknown to you and focus on the music and compositional organization and you will be more successful. If you had looked at the lyrics you would have an idea of where they want to take you with their harmonies. You who say you are a composer, I'm sure you make the music completely independent of the lyrics, which is why you show in this reaction that you don't pay attention to the lyrics for a moment. That gives us an idea of the kind of musician you are, coming to laugh saying that this is a funny song. Better put a comedy channel, which is more suited to your capabilities
