Jonny Hawkins has an amazing voice. He was the original drummer for the band and they still do mixes of that live. He didn't think he could do the vocals because his music teacher in high school told him he wasn't a sellable vocalist. They are hands down the best live show I've ever seen out of hundreds of shows. Check out "Don't Stop" featuring Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach it'll show you a different but equally as good style from them.

I think Jonny's story is that 12 of his classmates auditioned for choir. 10 made the cut. He was one of the two that did not. I don't know what grade it was. He assumed then he wasn't a singer.

Backing vocals are from bass player and guitar player, yes they pull it off live.

Johnny was the original drummer and a drummer at heart so whenever he can get away with pulling out more drums and banging on them he will. I'm sure Ben could do it solo, but where is the fun in that. You Need to see this band live.

As an example, the pre chorus is sung by the lead singer (Johnny) up until “along the rooooaaad” which is sung by Daniel, the bassist. And the high C harmonies if you will during the verses is done by the guitarist. And the harmony sang through the verses is done by Daniel.

Great reaction! Love these dudes. A lot of excellent music. And btw a ballast is the weight put at the bottom of a ship to give it balance and keep it upright. Think about it 🤔

Vocalist was the drummer, their vocalist left then they all sing, very very well I might add. They picked Jonny as lead vocalist...all of them are very talented. This band is special. Jonny is a singer song writer. This song is about letting go of hate and grudges. How we drowned ourselves as we hate and hit back. Let it go and you can float above the rest. Your life to live clean, and free.

Randomly clicking through older videos - this is fantastic! I had forgotten about these guys, I’ll be going back over their discography again I think. Their vocalist sells the whole song for me, great voice.

I gotta give this one another go. I associate Nothing More with crying (God Went North, Jenny, Fade In) and I tend to forget about their songs with lighter lyrics.

@@CriticalReactions Songs like Christ Copyright, The Matthew Effect, and Ripping Me Apart are all good songs that aren't as emotional. Still powerful lyrics imo, but not in the same way as a song like God Went North. If you ARE looking for another emotional song by them though, they recently released an acoustic version of an older song of theirs called Gone. And that one makes me cry every time

A music reaction channel with actual reaction and insight?! I love it! In this mix the lead singer does do all the vocals, in their live performances the guitarist and bassist both sing, and the bassist in particular is a very talented singer in his own right. Love your musical analysis and not just saying everything is perfect

ballast has a couple definitions but i feel like the one most people know is something used (gravel, rocks, bags of sand, etc) to weigh down a vessel for better stability. often used in ships and other boats.

I know I'm 1.5 years late with this, but I'm going through all your older videos in full (instead of just watching the music part and skipping the analysis), and this has been one of the videos I was most excited about revisiting, as they are my favorite band. Modern hard rock doesn't seem to be your thing, but I think Nothing More is probably the best and one of the most innovative that the genre has to offer, so I'm glad to see you enjoy them. I'll leave a couple recommendations here, just in case you see this. If you want another song like this, I'm gonna recommend Christ Copyright. If you're in the mood for an emotional one like God Went North, I suggest checking out Gone (Acoustic 2010). It's another song about his mother's battle with cancer, except this one was written before she passed. It's incredibly powerful.

Thanks so much for watching through the analyses as well! I know they can be a bit dry but I'm glad people are resonating with what I'm doing. I did listen to God Went North and Jenny in a double reaction. Really tough song to get through and I got quite emotional during the analysis. I'm not sure I'm quite ready for Gone yet. I did check out a live performance of Burn the Witch during the July Livestream and that was mesmerizing.

@@CriticalReactions I wouldn't say they are dry. I just had a low attention span, but these days I'm trying to improve my own ability to analyze the music I listen to, and I've found these videos to be super helpful. I'm glad you've seen the live version of Burn the Witch. It's one of my favorite parts of their live shows, and really elevates the song to a new level.

God Went North is a song about him struggling with his mother slowly dying, and Jenny is about his sister slipping further and further into addiction during that same time period.

Sorry I guess I never actually answered your question... I'd say the songs are like two sides of the same coin. You could certainly do both together, but you could also do them separately if you wanted to. I wouldn't really say they're a continuation, more a pair.

When he sings live it doesn't seem effortless, it sounds more like he can barely hit that note, a note you wouldn't normally be able to hit on a bad day. But assuming how much he's singing in a high tone, he sings really well on live concerts.
