Full Jonny Hawkins Interview:
• Nothing More's Johnny ...
Jonny Hawkins was told over and over again he shouldn't be a singer or a frontman. His childhood was full of people making him feel like a failure for even trying when it came to his voice.
But he didn't give into the fear. He actually leaned into it and channeled the energy into a grueling two year process of becoming an absolutely killer frontman and lead vocalist.
His range, his use of distortion and his melodic sense are unparalleled in modern heavy music. He's incredible to listen to and watch. We can learn about creating interesting and soaring aggressive vocals... And to think, if he'd have done what most people do when they are told they can't... We'd never have the immense pleasure!

I absolutely love Jonny's voice. It feels really natural and occasionally shouty yet I love how he manipulates it with his own hands. I remember hearing the chorus and feeling mindblown, to this day it's among my favourite studio performances!

Amazing video! I’m really bummed you didn’t reference the crazy vibrato he does all over the place, but especially on this song, but there’s no reason you would know about it if you haven’t seen a live performance! When you see him live he actually brings his hand up and pushes against his throat like a whammy bar at the end of certain phrases. You can really here it when he says “go” and “all” in the chorus. He has a natural vibrato that is actually similarly fast, but not nearly as wide. You can see him do it on the acoustic version of this song you can find on KZread.

It's funny to see a video like this because I remember when he was only Nothing More's drummer. After the band parted ways with their final singer and he took over, everything changed. The sound and lyrics became super heavy, it was almost like a different band entirely. He's grown SO much since those early days. He wasn't bad back then, but he's amazing now.

I saw them as an opening band a few years ago and they were fantastic. Besides great songs and a great sound, they put on an amazing stage show. Am I the only one who found this video? I feel like I got the golden ticket haha. Absolutely love Jonny Hawkins and was hoping you’d do a breakdown of his mindblowing vocals. He’s been known to use a technique he calls “mechanical vibrato” where he uses fingers to his throat to force a vibrato, you can see examples of that in some performances on SiriusXM I believe! Great breakdown Chris :)

Chris please check out a band called Holding Absence. Their singer Lucas Woodland is phenomenal, he has such a powerful emotive voice and is excellent at using rasp, grit and leaning into abandonment at the right moments (he can do it all live too). I think you'd really be moved by their songs and would enjoy deconstructing what he does with his voice. I'd check out Gravity or Wilt, or Afterlife! Like a few of the other comments have said, it would be interesting to get your take on his vibrato from a live video. I think a really interesting one would be the SiriusXM acoustic version of I'll Be Okay, because the acoustics accentuate his clean vocals, you can see his technique, but especially because at one point he loses it on a high scream. It sounds incredibly passionate and it's one of my single favorite musical moments, but I know he's pulling really hard and I think it makes for a good teachable moment.

I requested Johnny a few weeks ago. Amazing singer covered by the best teacher on KZread! Thank you Chris! Another phenomenal vocalist I'd love to see your take on is John Ramsay from Marianas Trench. They're more of a pop band verging into rock at times but his range, tone, theatricality etc is really on another level. E.g. He can go from essentially screaming super high notes on songs like "low" to pop styled vocals on "shut up and kiss me" to Epic queen-esque variety on songs like "no place like home" or "end of an era" to almost straight rock tones alongside Chad Kroeger on "Lady Mine" more recently. Huge variety of techniques on display and a few i haven't quite worked out if it's compression or vocal break or a combo or something else. Hope you like his stuff!

I had never heard of him before. In the first few seconds of the song with the very staccato sound of the music, I immediately though of Korn and the nu metal of the late 90s - early 2000s. Is this considered nu metal? You know who else utilized clean higher vocals and then screamed in a much lower, completely distorted way? The original singer in Drowning Pool on the song titled Bodies, although he doesn't display as much range as Jonny Hawkins does. I'm sure you've heard it. He starts out with a clean voice on: Beaten, what for Can't take much more (Here we go, here we go, here we go now) *now his voice starts gradually getting more aggressive* One, nothing wrong with me Two, nothing wrong with me Three, nothing wrong with me Four, nothing wrong with me One, something's got to give Two, something's got to give Three, something's got to give *then full distortion on the next word from here onwards* Now Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor Let the bodies hit the floor
