The ending of that song was one, if not the most intense moment of live music I've ever seen. The light show during Cult of Luna's performance is on an other level and it contributed to the feeling of intensity in a way that is hard to describe. Hope I can see them live again someday, they were the last band I saw before the pandemic haha.

I have a love of songs that have long, drawn-out, epic endings. There are no good videos of this fecking awesome song being played live. That's a travesty. Mandy, Julie, Cygnus and Me would be a match made in Valhalla.

Such a "prog" song begs to be listened more than once, with some attention beijg paid to lyrics. That final part gives me the chills every time. Repeating those 4 lines while progressivly "disapearing behind a wall of sound". [Representing disapearing into the storm, where she can be forgotten, for the good of everyone]. (Or that's how I feel it/get it) One of the best song ever...

That ending may be one of the most "overloaded" pieces of music I've ever heard. Like you said, they're good at "filling the space" in calmer, more minimalistic parts, but here they take things so far that there's pretty much no more space left to fill. It runs so close to sounding like a wall of noise that if it wasn't mixed well, or if it went all out from the start rather than introducing new layers and changes gradually, it might just sound totally incomprehensible. But the gradual buildup and introduction of new elements on top of the repetitive theme gives you the time to feel and appreciate each additional instrumental/vocal layer, before even more stuff gets added on top and it blends into that monolithic tower of sound. One of the all time great post-metal album finishers, if you don't feel totally overwhelmed and exhausted after it's over, they're not doing it right.

Well said, pebkac. I experience Cygnus often. I always have to turn up the volume so that it makes more sense. 11:01 onwards is one of my all-time favourite musical experiences.

Wow what a 2 day stretch of videos. Some of my favorite bands and songs. Yeah the ending of this song is so powerful. You just have to close your eyes and get enveloped in the weight and heaviness and emotion as the layers just keep adding up.

Coming back to this with a purely feeling/emotionally listen is on my to-do list, if nothing else than to just soak in that ending coming off of the atmospheric section.

This is the metal band that most metalheads don't know. This band becomes an obsession. Think of Tool's fans. They've had their claws in me for close to 20 years. This is one of their most memorable songs. If you like this, check out Ghost Trail off of the Eternal Kingdom album.

Rocking that dwarf beard and long hair 🏔 There’s two bands that just to choose my eyes and just give in completely to the music-CoL and Amenra. Both bonds are able to create a swirling, almost cyclone, effect with you just sitting in the middle of the chaos. I hope you do check out Amenra eventually! My favs are nemenedelle, Nowena | 9.10, and .Razoreater.

This music definitely rewards you for listening at MAXIMUM VOLUME, lol. No but really, the dynamics don't punish you too much, usually no painful frequencies or jarring attacks, it's quite enjoyable as far as huge oppressive walls of sound go!

ATH M50x need some equaliser manipulation but max volume is definitely required. I recommend focusing on Julie's vocals and the trance-inducing repetitiveness that starts at about 11:01.

I love this album, and this track is a top CoL song for me. But now I think you've got to check out Julie Christmas' own band, Made Out of Babies. It's much more direct, sludgy post-hardcore, and you can really get the feel for how special her voice is. She's got this psychotic, childlike delivery that I've just never heard anywhere else.

  • @CriticalReactions

"Psychotic, child-like delivery" the couple of times we've had Julie on the channel I've likened her voice to Jessicka from Jack Off Jill. I'd suggest starting with 'Swollen' or 'Everything's Brown' if you want to give them a shot. As for Made Out of Babies, it's on my short list of things to check out. I'm pretty excited given how much I've enjoyed her vocal performances so far.

I haven't given their music a chance since The Wreck of SS Needle, which I love. But I'm glad you revisited this, I enjoyed it. They really flooded the airwaves with this one! I don't think this band does much for me without Julie Though, even though I've never heard her outside of this band's one album, haha.

CoL are one of the two post-metal bands I really love (the other being Isis), and you elucidated many of the reasons why. They just do atmosphere and build-up to climaxes so well, and everything just drips with emotional weight along with the more obvious sonic weight. They seem to have a real knack for knowing when to let things breathe or to push the envelope and for how long. There's always tension in this kind of music (post-rock has it too) between leaning into a sound/section to create enough atmosphere to immerse yourself in, but then finding enough movement, motion, and variation to prevent it from becoming stale, and I think CoL are the absolute best at finding that balance. This is a great track, though I'd still say this album is one of my least favorites of theirs. It's still solid, but compared to Vertikal, A Dawn to Fear, or Somewhere Along the Highway it doesn't have as many "WOW" moments. I think you've heard the two best tracks from the album, and the other tracks are more of a drop-off in quality. I like the distinction you made between "orchestral listening" and bands like this that are more about creating an "amorphous, singular monolithic sound." I can appreciate both, though I sympathize with being a listener more used to doing the former and how bands like this frustrate that tendency.

Yeah CoL's emotional weight and build up is borderline perfect. They have that skill honed down to a T.

not big into CoL but Mariner was one of the best albums the year it came out for me, and a superb album overall, this track is not only the culmination but also the highlight of the album for me, also this got me into Julie's solo work aswell as Battle of Mice, always love going into a rabbit hole like this, you find something and that leads you to one thing and another and all of it is great stuff
