These videos are a master class, not only in mechanics, etc, but in psychology. The fact that, while situations may become frustrating, or mistakes are made (and corrected) Mustie never throws tools across the garage, gets really pissed off or loses patience. Instead, he laughs at the obstacles, keeps his cool and continues on. Amazing to watch, and a great lesson for all of us.

Totally agree. A very important lesson that can be applied to almost anything in life. When people get frustrated or uptight, they tend to lose their problem solving abilities, and become short sighted about larger issues.

I get the pleasure of working on and driving a 31 model a… I love the simplicity and general reliability…. But don’t love the transmission. Hard to keep moving smoothly…. And almost always feels like you can’t maintain enough rpm’s between shifts. Terrifying over like 50… but it is awesome how old cars can hold up.

My Dad would have loved to have worked with this guy because he was exactly as good-natured, pragmatic and analytic. In 1975, he and I rebuilt an old long block 396 for my 1967 Caprice Classic back when I was a senior in high school. It was one problem after another getting it running and it took all summer but he never lost his cool.

Fixing very old motors requires an enormous amount of patience. Sometimes more patience than actual knowledge. If you're not a very patient and careful person don't bother trying - spare parts are NOT usually available at the nearest auto parts store if you break something! 😐 But the rewards of getting an old automobile running again are enormous!

As a young 19 year old that tried to live beyond my means in College, bought a 1972 Caddy Fleetwood. Long and short, hit the freeway at speed ... and a "water puddle" and the Engine died. Would start (no mechanical sounds) but give it gas and it would die. "Chain Shops" said I needed a new Engine. Old man (which we are now) at the Muffler shop laughed. Bring it in by 8 and he'd have it back by Lunch fixed (and only $30 !!!). Seems Caddy used a "double wall" exhaust pipe system ... when I hit the water puddle, the interior wall separated and sucked in ... "Banana in the Tailpipe" deal. This reminded me of that ... and many of your "projects" with Rodent nests in the exhaust. Good catch !!!

Also look at the large "knob" on the distributor, that is a grease cup to lube the distributor shaft.

39:47 Ah, the PCV valve of it's day..the road draft tube. (black oily pipe to the left of the exhaust....crankcase blowby dripping oil straight down on the road) See photos of highways right up until the 1960's with an oil slick right down the middle of each lane from dripping road draft tubes.....

I had my own tractor when I was a kid, a 8n Ford. It had the same updraft Zenith. Always a pain. I rebuilt it myself at 10 years old and struggled but got it! The trick to that carb lasting was to run it often or drain it if sitting more than a couple of weeks

Would it accumulate water in the bowl? Or would the carb float not shut off the fuel flow? Was it rust from the tank making it's way down to the bowl?

Good morning. Sunday and this Plymouth does not have a Hemi. That is okay. Flathead classic, and for sure adventures that include with every turn of the wrench, a journey down history. Wooden wheels, narrow tires, real steel, no carbon fiber, though enough carbon elsewhere to make up for that. Fast is relative. Made by with purpose clear to them in the 1930s. Will it be clear now? Stay tuned, where invention, creativity, ingenuity, and all things Mustie1 amplified to 11. For sure there will be sparks, and thrills, and deft of hand and skill. Another motor coming to life. Look out another Plymouth a coming to roads from yesterday, here today!

I watched a show on TV where they had that car and all the restorer would say about the rumble seat is that in a crash you go through two windows instead of just one in the car. I also have to admit that the simpler the car the better at keeping it going it is, new cars are just too complicated for no good reason really.

@@OttawaOldFart you'd still get messed up pretty bad in the old cars if they crashed. They had no idea about crumple zones to absorb energy. So the force of the impact would get transmitted right into the occupants.

If it crashed fast enough you bounced off or got impaled by all the hard parts. If the car was salvageable you hose the inside out and rebuild it and start again. One of my first cars was a 41 Power Wagon pickup and my insurance guy at the time said they hated insuring trucks like that because they caused so much damage to everything they hit and the people inside.
