Wow! So impressive and a great example of going against our culture’s “get it fast and go in debt” way of building a home. You motivate me to take my time, learn, and ask for help instead of those quick buys! You’re my hero

Yes, it's impressive but a lot of Swedes are actually handy at doing a lot of the work themselves on houses to cut costs. Not all, however. My son-in-law isn't handy at all and has to hire someone for everything except changing a lightbulb. There's a British/Dutch girl who is doing something similar in Sweden and has a KZread channel: Roaming Wild Rose. Since you are female (me too) you might be interested in a female perspective as well. 😊

My husband and I live in a log home built in 1853. One great tip I would give you which is esthetically pleasing and is an amazing safety feature is to thread your electrical wiring through 1/2 inch electrical steel conduit pipe . This allows you to be able to transport power anywhere along your walls and has an industrial vibe. We painted ours black. Happy to send u pictures if you would like a visual.

Do your preserve food from your garden in the summer? If you learned how to dry and ‘can’ your own food that you grow in your garden you could contribute a lot to your monthly food budget, and when you can it yourself you know exactly what goes into it. When we were a young family with four children in northern Canada, we would can hundreds of jars a year. We canned fruits and vegetables ( some of which we bought from other people when they were in season and they were things we didn’t grow at all or not enough of), but we also canned fish, homemade soups and pasta sauces, salsas, pickles and relishes, and while we didn’t it is possible to can meat. Where you would run into trouble is that with no heat and running water, cans would freeze, which would obviously be a problem! However, you could easily dehydrate a lot of fruits, vegetables ,soups, stews and even meat to help get you through those long winter months ! Something for you to think about going forward, especially as you have a family and more mouths to feed. It also brings a sense of joy to know that you are producing and preserving for the physical needs of your . I am very much enjoying watching your Utube channel, and admire your perseverance. We have best friends who lived with 5 children in northern Canada with almost no insulation and heated by wood stoves. As they had running water all winter they had to set an alarm to get up multiple times throughout the night to ‘stoke ‘ the stoves to prevent the water from freezing. Many times when we visited them in the winter both of our families would sleep on mats in the kitchen where the heat was as the bedrooms and living room was freezing. I have to admit, I don’t miss doing that at all!!

Hi Kalle, Excellent changes to your main cabin and other beautiful buildings on your property! Congratulations on all of the new comforts you and your friends have completed! As you mentioned, as the years go by, we all have different goals and priorities! I know, you are looking forward to adding running water to your cabin and I wish you the very best of luck with your upcoming projects! Most of all, wishing Christine an easy delivery with a healthy baby for you both!

Bed sky = canopy...very cosy. Amazing transformations. You work so hard that sauna must feel wonderful at the end of the day. You also have amazing friends, nut that does not surprise me. I grew up in an isolated sommunity in northern Manitoba, Canada and, living up there, friends really had to rely on each other. Those communities are very special, particularly the people.

Very nice job Kalle! I greatly admire what you have done! Excellent work! You Scandinavians are sure obsessed with coziness! But I guess your winters make that a strong value and necessity! As much as you have struggled with your project, I am sure you have learned tons! And it is your creation now, not just a cabin you bought! I think what you are doing in life is so much more meaningful than what is seen in the lives of people who work in business, say, and buy everything they need. Buy endlessly, in fact! You often make what you need. That is a demonstration of resourcefulness as opposed to the helpless emptiness seen in lives of so many money hungry worker/consumers! You rock!

I do agree the couch is the heart of our home. Like you, I never had that. I am now 51 and my daughter is 9 and the couch is our cozy place. We watch shows and movies on Netflix we both like and have snack parties or read or nap together, play card ad board games, always with so many blankets and pillows and the occasional cat. You’ve done a beautiful job, I’m happy for you and Christine. I look forward to watching your journey continue.

Beautiful cabin! You have done a lot of work to not only make is functional but very nice. I have renovated homes and it is costly and takes time. It's not for the faint of heart. I can see why you wanted the TV screen. It was like a reward for the work you had done up to that point. I know a family who lived in a beautiful cabin in the forest in Maine, USA. They had no running water or electricity. They had an outhouse to use the bathroom and heated water on a wood stove for their baths. They loved it! The woman gave birth to three children in their cabin. It was a great life for them. They were a wonderful family and lived happily there.

Beautiful job over these last few years I've been watching you! Such a treat to see it documented. Without knowing if anyone else has mentioned this or not, but...regarding mice, one of the best deterrents is to have a cat (or cats). I don't know if Tuss and Nala have too strong a prey drive to tolerate cats, but that will definitely solve the mouse problem and also provide some lovely companionship (and foot/bed warmers as well!) Where we live here in Hawaii (vastly different than Sweden!) rats and mice are a huge problem, and our small dog's presence did nothing to deter them, but having a couple of the local semi-feral cats "adopt" us has worked a treat. They catch numerous rats and mice from our property every week and keep them out of the house. Anyways! Cheers, and best to you and Christine!

Hi Kalle, That was an amazing tour! I loved how you had footage from back in the days. 😃 I have a few questions: 1. Where do you store vegetables? I haven't seen any in the kitchen. 2. Do you have very little stuff? No stuff for when you have guests over, e.g., raclette, board games, play station, alcohol, etc.? Or big winter equipment, winter jackets, etc.? I saw the movie theater, the computer, a few books, a guitar, and the sauna as possible activities. 3. Are you planning to insulate the walls? 4. and most importantly, where will the baby stuff go and when the baby gets older, will they have their own room?

I 100% agree about the heart of the home. The kitchen is not the heart of mine either. It’s a beautiful, highly functional utilitarian space. But the heart of our home is our living room. Where we relax and watch movies, play games, entertain friends, light a fire and just take time to slow down. I love that others feel the same way:) You’ve done such a beautiful job. What a special play you’ve created. Thank you for sharing it.

Love your home! I have a wood burner too, and it heats my whole house here in Omaha, Nebraska. I want to tell you how I clean the glass with no chemicals and for free, except for one newspaper. You dip a sheet of paper in a bowl of water, not soaking it, just a bit damp. Then you put the wet side onto some cold ashes from the wood burner and rub it on the glass inside. It takes all the black right off in seconds! If it's really dirty I do it twice. If the paper gets too soggy grab another sheet.

Your refrigerator/Freezer looks as if the hinges for the doors are on the sink side of the appliance. Many refrigerators have made provision to switch the hinges in case of need. Have you considered an eco fan for your wood burning stove? It sits on top and is uses heat to operate and pushes the warm air away from the fire place out into the room. It made all the difference with our wood stove. Instead of just heating the living room it heats nearly the whole house. Beautiful home you've created for your family.

I would paint the kitchen ceiling white too. And get an induction cooktop for everyday use.

What an impressive remaking of the cabin. It was rustic before, but now it's cozy, more functionable and liveable. Great job on the sauna too.
