Comparison, Self-Image, and Your True Worth (feat. Stacey Sumereau)

Ойын-сауық

In our culture today there is so much pressure to look a certain way, to constantly compare yourself to others, and to attach your value and worth to your self-image.
Today Stacey Sumereau shares how she had the wrong paradigm for understanding her self-image and how the difficult birth of her daughter taught her about how God truly sees each of us.

6:45 I am literally in tears ❤ I was in the NICU August through October with less than 50% chance of living. Just hearing how you all loved on your daughter is giving me a deeper sense of how my family felt during that time. And, how we are supposed to feel about ourselves the rest of our lives-- with deep love ❤

I listened to your amazing story and it reminded me of how I felt before the Father told me he loves me. My mother and I always had a rocky relationship. When she was pregnant with me she suffered a lot from morning sickness. She was in England at the time visiting her aunt who took her to her doctor because she was so concerned. She was losing wait at an alarming rate. The doctor, unbeknownst to her at the time, prescribed Thalidomide. As a result I was born with no ear on my right side. She had only taken a few and found they weren’t working for her, so she stopped. When she discovered the damage the meds had done, she must have been devastated! She felt guilty and as a result always kept me at arms length. Sadly, I grew up feeling like I was unloved, except by my Dad, and unwanted. I was a constant reminder of her perceived failure. I am also a mother and I have always done what I thought was best for my kids because that is what we do for them. But because of this this I grew up feeling fat, ugly and stupid (none of which was true! ) One day, before going to Sunday Mass, some people I had invited for dinner called and were backing out of the invitation, I don’t even remember why! I just figured that it was because nobody, except for my husband and children, liked me. I sat in Church, near tears wondering why nobody liked me and why they didn’t want to spend time with me. I wasn’t a bad person, or stupid. I just couldn’t understand! After the readings, Father got up to do his homily and for the rest of my life I will remember that moment like it happened 2 minutes ago! He said…” it doesn’t matter if you are skinny or fat, smart or not, pretty or ugly! It doesn’t matter because God loves you and that’s all that matters! “ As he said those words, it was like God’s voice boomed in my head and he was telling me that he loved me! At that moment I looked around to see if anyone else had heard that beautiful noise! I started crying and ended up in the Church basement, when another friend came down as well, also crying! It seemed that we both needed to hear those words spoken to us in such a momentous way! From that day forward, I don’t care what other people think of me. I am a good person, caring, loving and all that matters is that HE loves me. It transformed my life! And other than my father, who passed away when I was 25, and my loving husband and family I have never felt such love! I am so thankful for that gift and I will cherish it till the day I meet him in Heaven!

Such a beautiful message of Gods love for us! “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. God does not look at us the way we look, or the way we would imagine He would look at us. It is a perfect love and justice to the extreme, out of human boundaries, bias or selfishness. Thank you so much for this video, I hope it will help others as much as it did help me today!

Hi Denis, I’m sorry to hear about your struggles. I hope things have been going well over the past 2 years. But even if they haven’t please remember that ‘all things are possible with God with those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.’ (Rom. 8). Allow me to share a super brief micro-summary of my own life. Maybe you can share it with your wife - even if you are apart. I was baptized as an infant and raised Catholic; attending Mass every Sunday, but that was pretty much the extent of my religious practice and upbringing. I attended public school K-12. I had to attend CCD in order to receive 1st Reconciliation, 1st Communion, and Confirmation. That said, I stumbled upon a children’s book of Bible stories when I was about 8 years old. That’s all it took for The LORD to start breaking into my life. Curiosity led to asking questions of my parents. Then as I got older I got involved in the CYO at my parish. By the time I was 15 I was the only one under 50 years old in the charismatic prayer group at my church. Then I got involved in a prayer group in the next town. By the next year I was attending another teen prayer group in another nearby town. [Just so you know, I didn’t get my license until I was 22 because I have epilepsy so I was depended on other people to pick me up]. The same year I got involved in a retreat program a few towns away - then served on team leadership for those retreats…By the time I was 18 and looking at colleges I wanted to enter the seminary but my parents insisted I go to a state school for my BA before I make that decision. That August (1984), I attended orientation at UMass Amherst (nicknamed ZooMass at the time). During the sleepover I heard some “nocturnal activity” in the room Nextdoor and decided I would override my parent’s wishes. 😂 I spoke with my parish priest, applied for the seminary, jumped through a bunch of hoops (including psychological exams!) and was accepted in 3 weeks (probably a record). By my senior year I discerned that the priesthood was not my calling but the seminary had definitely been exactly where The LORD wanted me. It had a tremendous influence on the man I am today, though it was no help with my marriage or in raising my 3 kids 😂. So, that being about the least micro version of an autobiography, I hope it demonstrates that nothing can limit God’s power. I pray God will bless you, your wife and your children throughout all of your lives.

I think you touched on this but I think this should also apply to our human achievements. We should do our best but in the end when we encounter failures or setbacks it doesn't mean we should beat ourselves up over it or that we aren't good enough. I think it's hard because in the modern world human achievement and how far you can get ahead in life are also rated very highly in addition to more superficial things such as looks. I've struggled with this as well, sometimes it's hard to just surrender everything to God.

I am having hair loss at age 23. I've been thinking that I may not get married, my friends may not treat me the same way they did before, no one may ever love me again. I only take solace in the thought of God and upon reading the scriptures and the quotes from saints and prayer. But still, most of the time I am still haunted by the thought of " Validation" of people. It frustrates me. I ask that you pray for me. I want to overcome this challenge.
