I dont subscribe to many on youtube, but you really do a great job at comparing vocal mics. Love the side by side comparisons. I've been searching for a mic that works good with a harmonizer without it picking up the Backing Track (I use a Bose L1 ll system, so the music is easily picked up in the mic causing ghost harmony to the BT music). Currently using a Beta 58A, Been watching all your Hyper/Super cardioid dynamics reviews. Very informative. I appreciate your keen ear and technique putting these mics through the paces. Will keep watching!!!

I loved the sr40v the first 2 months it worked. Now I use it as a paperweight or when I want to add white noise to a track.

I keep coming back to the e965 and SR40V comparisons. I was looking at the breath sections this time (e965 5:49-5:51 / SR40V 6:13-6:18). The SR40V indeed sounded different, more sparkling, metallic, realistic. I found two objective differences that might account for the "more resolved" appearance of the SR40V. Consistent with my other analyses, between 3617-7000 Hz (lower to mid-range treble) the SR40V is boosted an average of 5 dB over the e965. But the more pronounced differences are found in the upper treble and "air" frequencies (between 12k-22kHz). There the two mics have an uncanny and spot on mapping of frequency response. However, at the twelve peaks across the range, the SR40V is simply 12-20dB louder! By your analogy, it's not that the e965 is nonmetallic paint, but that, at a few wavelengths, the SR40V has larger flakes which make for its more sparkling presentation.

Thanks. Love your mic reviews. Got the e965 because of them. Can't afford the SR40V. Anyways, you mention in your reviews that mics are dependent on voice (yours is not mine) and headphones, but have you considered your own reviews as conditioned by your cans? Frequency response and driver speeds vary between cans too. A lot of it is subtle, but it is noticeable and not baloney ;-) The audio quality of a KZread video is only so good, but what I notice right away is that your reviews sound different on closed AKG k371s, open Sennheiser HD650s, or planar m570s, even when they are all tuned and EQ'd to the Harman Curve. Just a thought said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

I have found that I have got used to my headphones so I can hear differences in mics relative to them. Yes, I doubt that any of my mid-range headphones have the speed and definition to fully reveal the better mics but... where does one stop? Especially as it's going to KZread anyway. Nonethless, a surprising amount of detail/info manages to get through, I find.

@@AntonBrowne Thanks for replying. And I hear ya. The audio research industry calls it the "circle of confusion." Recordings made with this or that mic(s), mastered on some lame Yamaha monitors, played back on totally separate speakers and room arrangements, or even cans. Craziness. I was spurred to comment when you said that you hear an added bass response from the SR40, but they say it is flat. My first thought was that it might be in your cans... the boosted bass response. Where does on stop? Well, you have the right starting point IMO - a portrait mic. A flat frequency response on the mic. Then we need competent mic placement (and mic use!), then quality mastering (can of worms) and then good reproduction systems ($$). In cans, the Harmon Curve is a starting point for differentiating playback quality of cans. Actual confirmation of the performance properties of our equipment is key too IMO. First off I want to thank you for your excellent videos. What I need to know is feedback rejection. I sing for an R.E.M. tribute band, and currently use the e945. I love the mic, but am always looking to improve. I fear going from a dynamic to a condenser mic due to possible feedback issues on a loud stage, and monitor use. I did just order the e965, but I am intrigued by the Earthworks. Do you ever test for feedback rejection?

From my experience using many of the mics live, I would go for a hyper/super cardioid dynamic - which is what you have. If you're happy with the tonality, I don't think there will be much to gain feedback-wise from a change.

The best mic I've ever used is the akg D3800 ....for my voice .... Wondered if you'd ever used one and the closest thing to it today ....I didn't get on with the beyer m88 ...I thought it poor handling and plosives and a tad honky....se v7 is unbelievable for price but not as warm as my old very old akg

It might be handy to know how much gain you put on each microphone. In a class of microphones where it's really a game of 1%'s, it would be useful information, ime. Stay safe and well ✌️ 🎶🎶

The V70d and e965 deliver a strong, normal output, the SR40V delivers way more. On my inexpensive BR-800 recorder, the SR40V can drive it close to distortion even when the gain is on minimum!

@@AntonBrowne thank you Mr Browne. Interesting the EW circuitry is so hot, less line impedance maybe? Now I have to know why so I'll forage thru data sheets and user forums to uncover its magic. Be well mate ✌️ 🎶 🎶

Thomann is based in Germany, and since we left the EU, you have to add VAT to Thomann's published prices

However, the Thomann price with Eu taxes (I'm logging into French Thomann shop)* is still €288, whereas Anderton's price (with British VAT) is £399, so still noticeably cheaper at Thomann. I wonder if it's also skewed by Brexit, as it's a German microphone and now costs more to actually import into the UK for British sales? *I'm actually IN France, FWIW.

I have been using a V70d for a couple years. A very nice mic to hold, with a pleasing sound, even if you don't have someone with a good ear to do your EQ. Good amount of output. A little apt to feedback in small rooms, but that could just be my technique... (and the fact that I rarely have someone with good ears back at the house mixer, haha).
