Laura, your awareness of simple things like clearing back the dirt so people can see the edge of the hole is awesome. You never “um” or “err”, you speak fluidly and confidently, and then with Aaron’s camera and editing skills, your videos literally put many TV gardening shows to shame. I’m forever thankful of your skills, and knowledge, and that you are willing to share your unfolding garden with us!

At 74 I have a hard time holding a drill. Sigh... It is so frustrating. Laura is right, go with DeWalt drills! Hubby bought one from somewhere that stopped working while I was hanging curtain rods! I went and bought a Dewalt Just to finish my project! At first, he was mad that I spent $$$, however, he quickly realized it was the better tool. LOL Now I doubt I could use that auger; I am reduced to a small trowl. Aging is not fun!

Due to sticker shock for some augers, I ended up buying a "cheaper" auger off a popular online store and wow it sure was CHEAPER. Tried using it to plant my bulbs...DUD! So, for everyone considering buying an auger, treat yourself to solid steel one, I know they are quite pricey but it is a good investment for all those holes in the future!

Laura, I absolutely love my Power Planter augers. I have two sizes, a 3" in the 12" length, and a 4" in the 24" length. These augers are heavy-duty and extremely well made. You are the one who introduced me to Power Planter augers in the first place, and I'm so glad that you did. Planting bulbs has never been easier. I'm short, 5' 1" and I'm trying to decide if I'm strong enough to handle a bigger drill, maybe the concrete mixing one. The Dewalt Hammer Drill is the one I'm currently using with the smaller augers, and it works for me. Have a great weekend! ~Margie

He uses them for work all day long (construction field) and burns out motors or the batteries stop charging etc and they are great about either fixing them or (if it can't be fixed) replacing them. Tips ... Didn't read all the comments so maybe these have been said... For planting with an auger.... I like to set my drill on the lower setting used for putting in screws, instead of the higher setting used for drilling wood or metals, etc. The lower/screw setting also can have a racheting adjustment that stops the blade rotation if it catches on something like a big rock/root. This can save your wrists from a harsh jolt. I find there is usually no need to put any significant pressure down when digging with the auger. The blades tend to pull the auger into the ground and you really only need to guide it while drilling holes. And... Don't rush. It's tempting to try to go faster and faster as you plant a lot with an auger. But a measured pace is best and is still way faster than other methods of planting. With two helpers and one 2" x 24" auger I planted about 600 perennial plugs in a rocky hillside this spring in under 3 hours. One person placed plants per the design, one drilling holes, the third put in the plant. Not a speed record, but an easy pace to work at and no struggle overall. Happy planting

Important to note, I discovered that some augers have a hex end shape and fit a hex drill opening. Other drills like mine are chuck drills and the hex end augers do not stay attached. For my drills I need augers that are round and not hex on the part that fits into the drill. Thought I would mention this since I struggled with my hex auger not staying attached to my drill without understanding the issue. I love your videos; you break down confusing topics making them understandable and I greatly appreciate how you visually demonstrate your points. Thank you!
