I thought that's just because the tournaments lasted several days (or they were moving around chess pieces the size of the ones in Harry Potter). As far as I know, the brain doesn't change energy expenditure a huge amount between thinking/concentrating hard and blobbing out in front of the TV. I've found that the perceived effort of thinking is actually the muscles in my eyes moving around trying to draw "mental pictures". I've found with maths/chess/memory, I have to visually draw the possible positions or numbers in my head over and over, or stare at something. I notice if I'm listening intently and trying to memorise - a tensing of certain muscles trying to quieten down the sounds of my body - be it air in my nostrils or other rustling sounds that distract from moving around.

Given how exhausting doing sit-ups is, and doing 100 of them taking about one minute, I guess that one hour of doing sit-ups (6000 in total) burns far more than 180 kcal (= 0.03 kcal/situp).

I'd actually say sparring is the most calorie burning exercise. Especially if you're fighting two people at once. It requires a very high endurance and strength. My martial arts teacher says sparring is the most exhausting exercise he's ever done, and he's tried pretty much everything. Nothing was even close to how tiring it can be to fight someone else, especially if that person has as much training as you and if you're going for a while, we usually go for like 3 minutes with no breaks, which doesn't sound like a lot but it feels like a lot
