Comparing Stances in Grappling Martial Arts

Спорт

Today we will be comparing the "stances" in BJJ, Judo and Wrestling! Since there are plenty of ways to land or defend a takedown, there are plenty of ways to stand! In Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, Olympic (or kodokan) judo, or freestyle or folkstyle wrestling, there are plenty of options of stances we couldn't quite hit BUTTT thanks to Adli Edwards, Sensei Juan Rodriguez and Glayton Melo for helping me out with this one!

    Well, it's pretty clear. As BJJ has takedowns from Wrestling and Judo, you'll see people from BJJ using a stance from one of those 2 sports. most BJJ guys will just lower themselves like in wrestling so they can defend themselves against leg takedowns and also do them more easily, while some others will have more of a Judo stance and will rather try leg sweeps like the O Soto Gari or the De Ashi Barai (Harai) differences you say? Eh... people in Judo, people never have a low stance. While in almost every other grappling art, people crouch a lot.

    As a wrestler I appreciate this video so thank you very educational. Now since you dropped a question. Here is a similarity on all the styles. As you age and get hurt if you are a smart wrestler you adapt so you can compete or spar smart. Now the difference maneuverability plays a big role in wrestling for attacking from the outside or evading shots and take the back (cool variation example if you type in YT Old Master Wrestler vs Student)

    Hey Sensei Seth, I would love to see a video where you break down or discuss some of the most important moves/options from each fighting style. For example everyone loves to give TKD a lot of flack for being safe space karate, but no one can argue that they have great kicking prowess/technique, I have never seen a discussion on Muy Thai that didn't talk about specifically their legendary Leg Kicks and Round House, Catch Wrestling seems to have a huge emphasis on leg and body locks that you don't get in other grappling styles, etc. As a thought experiment I would love to hear your opinion on something like "If I could only take one thing from each martial art what would it be?" whether it be a specific technique or just a general stylistic through line that is used in multiple options. Love the channel and keep up the good work.

    @@jestfullgremblim8002 It isn't necessarily true about Judo IF people don't have grips, stances in judo are a little lower (especially back when leg grabs were allowed). The reason that crouching is less common in Judo is due to two reasons - 1) crouching opens you up to sacrifice throws a bit and 2) moving from a crouch makes it harder to do the sliding footwork in judo that protects you a bit from leg sweeps. I say that because even the very good wrestlers I've worked with have a tendency to lift their whole foot off the mat as they move, which would be helpful if I was any good at footsweeps.

    Great video ^^ I'm just a bit confused by the judo guy. "If I take a few steps I get a penalty, if I stand still I don't" (I probably butchered it). In every national/ international rule set it's the exact opposite. You get penalized for inactive time. This time is relative. So when you are active, grip fight, make an entry to a throw, fight over positions and when you MOVE, you won't get penalized as fast. Standing still, not taking any steps will get you penalized in like 3-5 seconds. This holds true for basically every rule set (IJF, USAJ, GJF, in the Olympics and all other national organizations I know of).

    Not much I have to say, but in the video, the Judo instructor did those three steps moving BACKWARDS. When I saw it, that's what I presumed he was saying: three consecutive steps backwards would get you a penalty. Would this be compatible with your knowledge?

  • @jeanackle

    @jeanackle

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Matt90Nine Well, I did think of Hajime when I posted my first reply, but it's still a bit confusing, really. Hajime basically means "Engage!", or phrased in the negative, "Stop stalling!". In the context of Judo, walking backwards is not, per se, any indication that you're stalling. You may be trying to set up a throw of the uke to their forward, provoking a reaction, etc. However, what the instructor in the video said was "three steps" and the steps he took were backwards. Therefore I imagined there might be a rule where if you take three consecutive steps back and do nothing else to attack, then it might be considered stalling.

Also I typically did this baiting technique expecially outside the clinch range, so that they would fall into the mindset of take the leg. Made a few traps for andaconda choke pins, Cow catchers, and butterfly guillotines real easy.

    I wish he would've expounded more on tracking foot movements in wrestling. Everybody moves in a certain pattern, so you coordinate your attack based on when and where the other person's feet are going to be. I used complicated footwork patterns as a form of defense because it made it extremely difficult for the other person to figure out where I was going to be so they could plan their attack. Basically, 15 seconds of rapid movements give you 10-12 seconds to set up a shot and figure out the other person's movements and 3-5 seconds to take the shot before the other person figures out where you're going to be. It backfired one time though; I hit a high crotch at the same time my friend was going in for an ankle pick and my forehead hit the corner of his chin and his nose. He stood straight up, his eyes rolled into the back of his head, he fell backwards and was out like a light before he hit the mat.

    @juliushauck3981 Жыл бұрын

    According to my experience in Judo (I trained it when we were allowed to grab legs) the stance didn't change that much. I guess it's more because you don't want to get grabbed beyond the shoulder. Also, but that's just my theory, it also might be a "leftover" of early times (early 20th century) when it was also about self defense when striking was a thing. You can find a lot about that in the videos of chadi here in KZread, which I absolutely would recommend. Judo wasn't that much about striking, but it did indeed include striking. And in self defense your opponent would use striking too, so a very low stance wouldn't be that mobile. But that's as I mentioned my theory about it and some others might know more about that. It did work well for me in MMA, JiuJitsu (Not bjj) and self defense nonetheless.

    Fun fact, sumo stance is similar to wrestling but putting lots of efforts on not touching the ground with your hands even by accident, and since hooking palms are allowed, they usually do like a weird peekaboo head movement thing but with the hands in a similar way to judo... But as soon as shit hits the fan it looks like chaos(but it isnt)

    @@Mr.Smiley_J it got bad rep in ufc 1 but... First, it was an early stop... 100% sure about that... And second, they picked a guy who only fought in the lower divisions, who only won 3 times in 2 and a half years and was retired for 5 years... He had been out of training for twice as much as he was competing... If they called chyonofuji, who had just retired he year before, had over 1000 wins, multiple golden stars, was a literal yokozuna and looked like a final boss from a mortal kombat game, i bet things would have been waaaaaaaay different...

    Something to note about Judo stance is that the open stance matchup changes things quite a lot. It becomes more about getting the underhook or the wizzer with the lead hand, or picking up sweeps to get into range inside or outside

    Notice the bjj guy’s front leg is hanging out more than the wrestler. In wrestling you’d be inviting a single leg takedown with only a sprawl to counter. In bjj you can bait the guy to shoot a takedown to execute a guillotine choke

    One more interesting stance to cover for grappling arts would have been old-school Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (distinct from modern BJJ). The difference of having to deal with striking changes the stance a lot, I think, because the old Gracie Challenge videos don't have that many clips of the Jiu-Jitsu fighter in the bent-over stance.

  • @jeanackle

    @jeanackle

    Another interesting one would have been Sambo. A large part of it ('s grappling) is Judo, but there are other elements in there too (traditional Turkish wrestling is one I believe). There is also its Combat Sambo variant, which allows striking.
