Winsor Newton and Daniel Smith don't usually mix well bc their formulas are so different. Despite the Winsor Newton having more consistency on its own, most artists who have Potter's Pink hardly ever use it straight out of the pan. It's usually used as a mixing color for neutrals, pastels, and muted tones. Like for instance, when mixing with Sap Green or Olive Green, you get something similar to Serpentine Genuine. When mixing with Pthalo Turquoise, you get a muted Prussian Blue. With Quin Coral, it makes a gorgeous Scarlet Ibis, and with Quin Magenta, you get a Rose Madder Genuine. If you combine it to a mix of Pyrrol Orange & Buff Titanium, you get a pretty Shell Pink. And for shadows on clouds, when added to Zirconian Cerulean, it makes a Grey Lavender. So for me, I think I'll go with the DS version for its lovely mixing characteristics, but even on its own I love its dusky & dusty tone. It makes paintings look more dynamic. While I like the Winsor Newton's consistency up close, it seems to appear boring when looking at it from arm's length -- which is typically the way paintings are viewed. Daniel Smith, on the other hand, keeps drawing my eye bc that assymetry & inconsistency creates interest. Plus I can't get over its depth of color. It's a gorgeous pink!

I initially hated Potter’s Pink because the Daniel Smith version was the first one that I tried, and it wasn’t what I was expecting. But after reading a few reviews, I gave the Winsor & Newton’s version a try and fell in love. (W&N is my favorite brand of watercolors anyway, so not sure 🤔 why I tried the DS first.) I later bought the Roman Szmal version and love that one as well. Potter’s Pink has a lot of variety across brands like Payne’s Grey, and it is truly a matter of personal preference. Thank you so much for sharing all of these options! It was nice to see a comparison of each brand.

I didn't know Potter's Pink existed until I got a Daniel Smith 238 dot card recently, but I absolutely love it! The more I paint, the more I realise my preferred palette gravitates towards more natural tones, and within that I tend to prefer granulating colours. This was interesting, thank you. 😊

Windsor & Newton is the original Potter’s Pink. I use Roman Szmal mostly.

Thanks Mystery. This confirmed that I prefer WN over DS when I eventually purchase this color. I’ve been a bit obsessed with fountain pens, planners, travelers notebooks, etc. and haven’t touched my watercolors in a while. This gets me excited again.

When i got Daniel Smith potters pink i didnt like the tone as much as the granulation, but i loved the tone of Winsor newton but the granulation is too...well behaved. The mix of both is chefs kiss perfect. Been rocking this 50/50 mixture for a few years. Mentioned this to Liz Steel on her blog and i think she was giving it a go. However, i am picking up a tube of Maimeri blu's version to test because it looks like the mix all on its own..

I may have to try that-the texture of the winsor newton is a little strange to me.

Same. I much prefer the Daniel Smith texture but not the color.

This was very interesting. The mixes with the other colors looks like it’s not very accurate because the Daniel Smith looks like water is pooling at the bottom of the swatches. Maybe if the water was equal between DS and WN it would look more the same. Nonetheless, you can’t go wrong with any of these colors. Thanks for the fun video! I have Daniel Smith and I find it is much better if I wet the pan before I use it.

I only have the Roman Szmal, the DS was always out of stock when i visited my art store. But i’m very happy with the full pan Aquarius one (the brand from Roman Szmal). It’s in my everyday carry palette :)

Did you use the Winsor & Newton potters pink Half pan or did you buy the tube and pour it in a pan and let dry? Great video!! Ps. You should do more of these videos if you can: Any colors you have more than one brand of- you should do a comparison like you did here... Thanks! And welcome to my channel. I used the Winsor Newton tube paint dried in a pan. Winsor Newton recommends not putting its tube paint in pans, but I think it works just fine. I think it’s really just a ploy to get you to buy their pans too, which are a different formula. I intend to do more of these at some point with different colors. This was first on the list because it was the most requested😊

Just ordered the one from Kremer, but W&N looks very pretty. I like the mixes of the DS version, too. My palette is mostly Schmincke and DS.

I was using the Daniel Smith, but switched to Winsor Newton on Liz Steel’s recommendation. Interesting to see the comparisons over several brands.

This was very informative, thank you. I have Potters Pink from DS and Schmincke but that Winsor Newton is so smooth! I might have to put that on my wish list. I’m quite surprised actually, when I think granulation WN doesn’t jump to mind first.

Same here--I don't associate WN with granulation. I've switched out to the WN in my palette and it is working quite well--with lots of granulation.

I’ve been meaning to for a while, but just haven’t gotten it together. I’ll put it on the list again.

I love the W&N Potters pink but find it went rubbery and didn't reset easily after transferring from tube to pan. Not sure if it was a bad tube or what? I've since gone thru x 2 Roman Szmals Potters pink pans and found both to granulate really nicely on cold press and smooth. Ty for your comparisons and hope to see more. 💟

I like very much the version from Iron Range is mor redder than the others. The DS one is a little browner. the Roman Szmal have not so much granulation.

I have Potters Pink from Schmincke and Renesans, and Renesans is really hard to rewet, probably because of the different binder. And it is very light. Schmincke is easy to rewet, and looks a little more muddy. But I am astonished to see W & N is not so far away. It is said to be more pink than Schmincke.

Oh wow, quite a difference between brands. I don’t even paint and I find these swatches really interesting. Would you consider doing a video with beginner recommendations?

I have the Daniel Smith one, but I’m looking for one that looks a bit more pink and that has less granulation. Out of these here, I think the Roman Szmal is the closest to what I’m looking for. Don’t get me wrong I love the Daniel Smith potters pink, but in my Canson mixed media sketchbook it hardly looks pink, it comes off as a strong red-brown on my paper. My ideal potters pink would be one that goes down smooth, low granulation, and where the “pink” is more noticeable in the paint

I prefer Roman Szmal as the winsor and newton is not good in a pan, it does not rewet well.
