Thanks for this and congrats on being selected by ON1 for this highlight!

good comparison but you should have probably included the Adobe masking features in Photoshop and Camera Raw. Also, On1 does have both a luminosity and color mask which can be applied against the super select mask. It also feathering features. One great thing about On1 is you can do more than just tone and color corrections but also all the effects like blur, glow, dynamic contrast etc on specific parts of the image via super select. .I have all those products other than CaptureOne which is so over-priced it is unbelievable.

Good comparison of this three RAW converters. However, stability, speed and natural colors of Capture One Pro are best and especially at the black Friday week, you can get Capture One Pro cheaper (up to 50%). So far, your comparison seems to be not catching all the parameters that are important for me. Anyway, I have all three programs and prefer Capture One as standard RAW Converter for my photos, Luminar NEO for portraits and people and ON1 Photo RAW 2024.5 with Brilliance AI for give good landscape photos the final look in colors. I think all of this three RAW Converters have their strengths and weaknesses.

Thank you! You have confirmed my opinion of on1 photo raw. I don't have capture one but I do have on1 and luminar neo as well as lightroom cc, photoshop and a few others. I have been extensively trying the AI selection in on1 and i think it is the best at least for me.

I left the Luminar program at version 4, and Capture One doesn't just look overpriced, it is and has been from the beginning. I had all but left On1 but with recent improvements have returned to give it another try. Hopefully On1 continues to improve and will become my permanent Lightroom replacement after leaving Adobe for good in April. Thanks for sharing

So you're finally pulling the plug. Why so? Capture one has always been overpriced but 6x difference is pushing it. Yes Im sensing people are giving this a second look. Masking for me used to be the reason to pay extra for C1 but now it's harder to justify.

Last year C1 responded to the criticism of high price by offering a new licence for £140. This was less than the upgrade price for DXO PhotoLab V7. Fingers crossed for this years Black Friday sale.

Excellent review, thanks. Straight to the point with no time-wasting filler, and great image examples. It's amazing to me how photo apps with this feature have improved at object selection over the past few years. Another year or so, and they may all be nailing the palm tree cleanly on the first try as well. This improvement does indeed allow faster, easier image editing and is worth paying to stay up-to-date.

Thanks for watching. Interestingly the improved object selection just came in the past few months. Capture One was around Oct 2023, Luminar in April and ON1 in June 2024. Don't know why this is so, but glad to see this happen. Really moves the needle in the editing experience.

Good comparison! I've used Capture One for several years because it has always given the best image quality (IMO) right out of the gate, and I've tried them all. And yes, C1 is WAY overpriced. ON1 has made solid progress in all areas and I think it is a real contender.

Luminosity mask in ON1 is the proper tool for landscapes.

By default On1’s Object AI has a rather large feathering hence the halo around the palm tree, but you can adjust the feathering afterwards.

Nice review, but one thing that was completely left out was color masking... Capture One's Color Editor tool can easily define a color range and create a mask from it, which goes a long way for things like tree vs background example in this video. with Capture One, i wouldn't even bother using the AI masking... since the tree is such a different color than everything else... creating an exact 1:1 mask of only the tree would have taken a moment, and not even needed any of these newer "AI" features... i reviewers and even users often overlook this, I'm curious if any other tools offer a similar masking feature.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree the example could have been better. The distinct color would have been best masked with the luminosity masking tool which all...Capture One, ON1 and luminar Neo do have. I should have picked a complex subject WITHOUT the distinct. Capture One is the only one I know which creates a mask from a color range which probably might even be better fo this case. The rest only have the luminosity masking tool.

i noticed when masking the palm tree you used luminosity mask with on1 but did not use a luminosity mask when testing luminar. maybe theres a reason for that.

Good point. Luminar does have an excellent luminosity mask. I could have used a better example for mask refinement

Yes that's true. The difference though is you cannot apply a luminosity mask to refine (i.e. add to or subtract from) a mask from an object selection tool as you can do with Capture One.

If you compare just one feature Capture One is over priced; but when you compare the whole package, not so much. Capture One is my main editor and so far nothing beats it for culling through 1500+ shots from an agility trail, bulk editing, colour management etc. I do keep ON1, Luminar and Afinity around for some specialized features. Not sure how long I'm going to keep Luminar current as for my use case it's falling behind (I've thought this in the past with ON1 and Luminar then they update it and I decide to keep it for a bit more...... LOL ). We do have some good choices out there; Capture One just suits me and my work flow so much better than the others.

Thanks for your feedback. I do see where you are coming from. I did purchase Capture one too! I guess one way to look at it is 300 dollars is in reality small when you consider the top notch image quality out of the box and when comparing the cost of your equipment and travel! I did the review though from the point of view of a hobbyist who might not be willing to spend too much but just wants quality features! I thought ON1 fills that criteria the best! Luminar I think will always have its niche in its HDR merging. Other than that on1 has taken the lead in every thing else.

Why leave LR out of this comparison, it also has object select. And it is pretty good. I have a subsription to Luminar Neo and PS/LR. the selections tools offered by Adobe are much better.

I chose C1 and luminar because of their similar point and click masking. However I'd love to compare with Lightroom as well. I do suspect that id the best! We shall see.
