Growth in watercolor can be hard to measure, so sometimes it can help to compare your earlier work with some of your more recent paintings. Taking a step back to notice the progress you’ve made can not only be encouraging, but it can affirm and solidify the good lessons you’ve learned along the way.
It can also be incredibly helpful to hear how others have refined their process. This can help you identify your next areas of growth, especially if you feel stuck.
In this week’s video, I walk you through two of my paintings on the same subject, painted about 2 years apart. There are certainly things I like about each, but there are clear improvements to note. I can see where I have become a lot clearer on details that need to be included and details that should be eliminated.
With this video, I hope you are better able to identify growth areas in your practice and are reminded to acknowledge your own progress too!
Until next time, keep moving forward in your learning, keep working at it, and keep practicing!

Thank you!
The power pole also contributes to the story!
Just started watercolor a year ago, so much to learn! Thank you for helping me learn! I find it hard not to get discouraged that I'm not as good as I want to be. So this video helps me to remember progression and practice.

So glad to hear that! Best of luck in your painting!
I've only been painting for not quite a year, but I have a selection of my favourite paintings on my bedroom wall. Already I can see improvement and skills I have learnt. I actually like the construction workers better in your first painting than the second, but thanks for sharing your thoughts on them boht.
Thank you. Your tutorials are so helpful. Your kind, gentle nature is the best way to learn and grow in watercolor painting.😊❤️

Great video! 👍👍👍
Thank you! Encouraging and gentle instruction. Perfect
I kind of like the construction workers in the first painting more, loser. ALONG with cone. But the contrast in second painting is beautiful.
Thanks for this demonstration. I like both pictures! They are quite different interpretations of the same scene and your explanation of their differences illustrated how to use techniques to change your art to highlight and change a piece.
Wow, what a progress! I love this study. Thank you for sharing. I love your style btw 😊
This video is so interesting, thank you 😊
Love these kinds of videos, so much to learn by doing these comparisons.
Greetings from Canada. Thanks for your videos. They have been very helpful and I already tried some of the tutorials and techniques. I began watercolour painting about one and a half years ago to fulfill a passion. I’ve completed over 70 paintings, and of those kept nearly all the ones that didn’t work out, to learn from my mistakes. I was reminded by one British artist that one has to expect setbacks, and to not give up. Still lots to learn, but gaining experience. A video on watercolour paper would be really helpful, since the paper can also be a source of frustration for many beginners, because the drying time varies between different manufacturers, sheets versus pads, and percentage of cotton.

Thanks for watching! Best of luck in your painting. I will make a video on paper one of these days.
Thanks for the useful tips of water color
Great comparison. I would say you got the perspective and vanishing point more accurate (perfect really) in the later painting too, which I think helps realism and reading the subject a lot.

Good observation. Thanks!
I liked the older one...loose style. The later one look like a photograph
Encouraging,thank you.
Thank you for this video! I really enjoyed seeing your thoughts and getting some good ideas for improving my own works. As to your question: I like to reflect by looking through my scans of older works, taking time to find things I liked about them as well as noticing things I do better now. It's important to remember this is a hobby that I want to grow with, so gentleness and encouragement go way farther than harsh criticisms.
Nice. Progress in the Process.
Always interesting to see the progress, thanks! If I may, although it's true the newer one is less messy and the vertical pole is a key addition, I find that the white car is too distracting and actually makes my eyes leave the frame, also because it heads outside of the painting. Just my very personal opinion 🙂
I struggle with the concept of moving things around or leaving them out when I want to paint something which I know other people will recognise and relate to. In this context people usually judge the realism first and the artistic quality second. Do you have any videos on how to paint with believable realism while still getting rid of the elements which you know are going to muck up your painting? Obviously I could choose another angle but there are times when this is not possible.

Good question. I'll try to make a video on that.
Thanks for using your own work to teach is what to avoid. Valuable lesson thanks you Matthew.
